  • The scope of this work investigates the relationship between the amount of oxygen-functional groups and hydrogen adsorption capacity with different concentrations of phosphoric acid. The amount of oxygen-functional groups of activated carbons (ACs) is characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The effects of chemical treatments on the pore structures of ACs are investigated by $N_2$/77 K adsorption isotherms. The hydrogen adsorption capacity is measured by $H_2$ isothermal adsorption at 298 K and 100 bar. In the results, the specific surface area and pore volume slightly decreased with the chemical treatments due to the pore collapsing behaviors, but the hydrogen storage capacity was increased by the oxygen-functional group characteristics of AC surfaces, resulting from enhanced electron acceptor-donor interaction at interfaces.

  • Surface functionalization of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) was carried out by means of acid treatment. The presence of oxygen functional groups on the surface of acid-treated MWNTs was confirmed with the aid of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray spectroscopy. In addition, carboxylic groups generally formed on the surface of acid-treated MWNTs, and the dispersion was increased by the duration of the acid treatment. The zeta-potential indicated the surface charge transfer and the dispersion of MWMTs. Morphological characteristics of acid-treated MWNTs were also observed using a transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Raman analysis, which was revealed the significantly unchanged morphologies of MWNTs by acid treatment. The hydrogen adsorption capacity of the MWNTs was evaluated by means of adsorption isotherms at 77 K/1 atm. The hydrogen storage capacity was dependent upon the acid treatment conditions and the formation of oxygen functional groups on the MWNT surfaces. The latter have an important effect on the hydrogen storage capacity.

  • There are several materials for the hydrogen storage such as hydrogen storage alloy, carbon nanomaterials, non-carbon nanomaterials, compounds etc. Efficient and inexpensive hydrogen storage is an essential prerequisite for the utilization of hydrogen, one of the new and clean energy sources. Many researches have been widely performed for the hydrogen storage techniques and materials having high storage capacity and stability. In this paper, the patents concerning the carbon nanomaterial hydrogen storage method were gathered and analyzed. The search range was limited in the open patents of Korea(KR), Japan(JP), USA(US) and European Union(EP) from 1996 to 2006. Patents were gathered by using key-words searching and filtered by filtering criteria. The trends of the patents was analyzed by the years, countries, companies, and technologies.

  • The hydrogen storage mechanism of graphite was studied by measuring the electrical resistance change. Graphite was expanded and activated to allow for an easy hydrogen molecule approach and to enlarge the adsorption sites. A vanadium catalyst was simultaneously introduced on the graphite during the activation process. The hydrogen storage increased due to the effects of expansion, activation, and the catalyst. In addition, the electrical resistance of the prepared samples was measured during hydrogen molecule adsorption to investigate the hydrogen adsorption mechanism. It was found that the electrical resistance changed as a result of the easy hydrogen molecule approach, as well as of the adsorption process and the catalyst. It was also notable that the catalyst improved not only the hydrogen storage capacity but also the speed of hydrogen storage based on the response time. The hydrogen storage mechanism is suggested based on the effects of expansion, activation, and the catalyst.

  • In this work, magnesium (Mg) nanoparticles were plated onto the surfaces of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) in order to investigate the effects of their presence on the high pressure hydrogen storage behaviors of the resultant Mg/MWNTs. The structure of Mg/MWNTs was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The pore structure and total pore volumes of Mg/MWNTs were analyzed by $N_2$/77 K adsorption isotherms. The hydrogen storage behaviors of the Mg/MWNTs were investigated by BEL-HP at 298K and 100 bar. From the results, it was found that Mg particles were homogeneously distributed on the MWNT surfaces. The hydrogen storage capacity increased in proportion to the Mg content. It can be concluded that Mg paricles play an important role in hydrogen storage characteristics due to the hydrogen spillover effect.

  • Various characteristics - mechanical propertis, thermal cyclic hydriding characteristics and resistance to degradation by $H_2O$, CO in hydrogen - of hydrogen storage alloy powder compacts using PTFE and silicon sealant as a polymer binder were studied. Diametral tensile strength of 10wt% PTFE and 5wt% silicon sealant added compacts showed relatively high value of $4kg/cm^2$ and $10kg/cm^2$, respectively. Compacts show a good resistance to degradation by $H_2O$ in hydrogen. But hydrogen absorption rate and capacity of compacts were decreased by CO in hydrogen with the number of cycles. Cu coated and PTFE bonded compacts showed very small decrease of capacity and a good strength even after 1000 cycles of thermal hydriding and dehydriding.

  • In this work, highly porous carbons were prepared by chemical activation of carbonized biomass-derived aerogels. These aerogels were synthesized from watermelon flesh using a hydrothermal reaction. After carbonization, chemical activation was conducted using potassium hydroxide to enhance the specific surface area and microporosity. The micro-structural properties and morphologies were measured by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy, respectively. The specific surface area and microporosity were investigated by $N_2$/77 K adsorption-desorption isotherms using the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller method and Barrett-Joyner-Halenda equation, respectively. Hydrogen storage capacity was dependent on the activation temperature. The highest capacity of 2.7 wt% at 77 K and 1 bar was obtained with an activation temperature of $900^{\circ}C$.

  • Metal hydride based hydrogen storage under moderate temperature and pressure gives the safety advantage over the gas and liquid storage methods. Still solid-state hydrogen storage including metal hydride is below the DOE target level for automotive applications, but it can be adapted to stationary or miliary application reasonably. In order to develop a modular solid state hydrogen storage system that can be applied to a distributed power supply system composed of renewable energy - water electrolysis - fuel cell, the heat transfer and hydrogen storage characteristics of the metal hydride necessary for the module system design were investigated using AB5 type metal hydride, LCN2 ($La_{0.9}Ce_{0.1}Ni_5$). The planetary high energy mill (PHEM) treatment of LCN2 confirmed the initial hydrogen storage activation and hydrogen storage capacity through surface modification of LCN2 material. Expanded natural graphite (ENG) addition to LCN2, and compression molding at 500 atm improved the thermal conductivity of the solid hydrogen storage material.

  • Polyacrylonitrile-based carbon nanofibers (CNFs) containing Ti and Mn were prepared by electrospinning. The effect of metal content on the hydrogen storage capacity of the nanofibers was evaluated. The nanofibers containing Ti and Mn exhibited maximum hydrogen adsorption capacities of 1.6 and 1.1 wt%, respectively, at 303 K and 9 MPa. Toward the development of an improved hydrogen storage system, the optimum conditions for the production of metalized CNFs were investigated by characterizing the specific surface areas, pore volumes, sizes, and shapes of the fibers. According to the results of Brunauer-Emmett-Teller analysis, the activation of the CNFs using potassium hydroxide resulted in a large pore volume and specific surface area in the samples. This is attributable to the optimized pore structure of the metal-containing polyacrylonitrile-based electrospun CNFs, which may provide better sites for hydrogen adsorption than do current adsorbates.

  • The Zr-based $AB_2$ type Laves phase hydrogen storage alloys have some promising properties, long cycle life, high discharge capacity, as electrode materials in reversible metal hydride batteries. However, when these alloys are used as negative electrode for battery, there is a problem that their rate capabilities are worse than those of commercialized $AB_5$ type hydrogen storage alloys. In this work, we tried to develop the Zr-based $AB_2$ type Laves phase hydrogen storage alloys which have high capacity and, especially, high rate capability.
