Hydrogels composed of glycidyl methacrylate dextran (GMD) and poly(acrylic acid, PM) were prepared by UV irradiation method for colon-specific drug delivery. GMD was synthesized by coupling of glycidyl methacrylate to dextran in the presence of 4-(N,N-dimethylamino)pyridine. GMD was photo-polymerized by ammonium peroxydisulfate as initiating system in phosphatebuffered solution (0.1 M, pH 7.4). And then, acrylic acid monomer was added and subsequently heat-polymerized by 2,2'-azobisisobutyronitrile as an initiator. The hydrogels exhibited high swelling ratio (about 20) at $37^{\circ}C$, and showed a pH-dependent swelling behavior. In addition, the swelling ratio of the hydrogel was remarkably enhanced to about 45 times in the presence of dextranase at pH 7.4. The swelling-deswelling behavior proceeded reversibly for the GMD/PM hydrogels between pH 2 and pH 7.4. Release of 5-aminosalicylic acid from the GMD/PAA hydrogels was evaluated in simulated gastrointestinal pH fluids in the absence or presence of dextranase. We concluded that the hydrogels prepared could be used as a dual-sensitive drug carrier for sequential release in gastrointestinal tract.
Interfacial and rheological properties of selected hydrogel formulations were studied to understand the contact-lens comfort in end use. It was concluded that protein adsorption from aqueous solution decreased monotonically with increasing surface energy (water wettability) of tested hydrogels. Also, it has revealed that friction coefficient of polydimethylsiloxane-polyvinylpyrrolidone (PDMS-PVP) was significantly larger that 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) based hydrogels. Interestingly, in artificial tear solution, friction coefficients of HEMA based hydrogels were larger than silicone hydrogels.
In this study, hydrogels with fast swelling and high absorbent properties were prepared using biopolymers approved as a food additive and their swelling properties were characterized. To improve the swelling properties of conventional hydrogels, we formed gas bubbles using a foaming agent in the process of preparing hydrogels and characterized in terms of equilibrium swelling ratio, swelling kinetics and cytotoxicity. In particular, alginate hydrogels observed by a digital microscope have an open-pore channels structure with the sizes of hundreds micrometers. Also, the cell viability of all hydrogels were found to be much higher than that of poly(acrylic acid).

Hyaluronic acid and chitosan-based poly(ethylene oxide) (HA-PEO and Chitosan-PEO) hydrogels have been employed as unique biomedical polymeric materials with properties such as bioactivity from polysaccharide, biocompatibility of HA and chitosan as well as PEO and control release of bioactive molecules from the hydrogel itself. We here examine in situ hydrogels based on hyaluronic acid and chitosan in terms of their synthesis, mechanical properties, morphologies and in vitro cellular interactions on their surface and inside. In vivo bone regeneration of HA-PEO and Chitosan-PEO hydrogels was compared with in mouse model.
Drug release rates from copolymer hydrogels were controlled by their hydrophilic-hydrophobic balances. As a model copolymer hydrogel, poly(acrylamide-co-styrene) was synthesized at different monomer composition. Release mechanisms of propranolol-HCI from the copolymer matrices were investisated. Swelling rates of the copolymer hydrogels retarded as their hydrophobicity increased. Swelling kinetics of the copolymer hydrogels regulated drug release rates via polymer relaxation controlled release mechanisms. Zero order drug release could thus be achieved within certain periods.
Thermoresponsive hydrogels based on N-Isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) and 2-Hydroxyethylacrylate (HEA) were prepared by free radical polymerization. The hydrogels were characterized by elemental (CHN) analysis, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA). DSC thermogram showed two endothermic transitions which are due to hydration of water present in different environments. One near $0^{\circ}C$ called melting transition of ice and was used to calculate the quantitative determination of the amounts of freezing and non freezing water. The other transition above the ambient temperature was due to the combination of hydrophobic hydration and hydrophilic hydration which changes with the copolymer compositions. Swelling and deswelling studies of the hydrogels were carried out using the aqueous media, salt and urea solutions. The experimental results from swelling studies revealed that copolymers have lower rates of swelling and deswelling than the homopolymer.
Hydrogels of semi-interpenetrating polymer networks (semi-IPNs) were prepared by two step reactions. Dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DMAM) and poly(ethylene glycol)-dimethacrylate (PEGDM) were copolymerized to yield hydrogels, and then acrylic acid (AA) monomer were adsorbed in the hydrogels followed by polymerization of AA to produce semi-IPNs. The swelling behavior of semi-IPNs depends largely on pH of medium, showing that the degree of swelling of the semi-IPNs exhibits a minimum at pH 6.0. It is observed that the elastic modulus of semi-IPNs is closely related to its swelling behavior.

New polymeric hydrogels based on vinyl ethers have been synthesized by the ${\gamma}$-initiated polymerization method. Their physical chemistry and physical mechanical properities have been studied. It has been shown that structure and swelling behavior of the hydrogels can be regulated by the changing of synthesis conditions nature of monomers. Novel stimuli-sensitive polymers have been synthesized by the varying of macrochains hydrophilic-hydrophobic balance. The some biomedical aspects of application of hydrogels in capacity of drain aging polymeric materials in ophthalmology surgery, implants in plastic surgery as well as drug delivery systems have been investigated.
Hydrogels have been developed and used in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine to deliver therapeutics to injured or diseased tissue because of their versatility and properties that can be tailored to match the natural extracellular matrix. Hydrogels can be made with a variety of physical and chemical properties combined with light responsiveness ideal for applications in different fields of medicine that require the spatiotemporal control of therapeutics. Light, as a stimulus, is relatively inexpensive, contact-free, noninvasive with high spatial resolution and temporal control, convenient and easy to use, and allows deep tissue penetration that is relatively harmless. Photoresponsive hydrogels are ideal candidates for on-demand drug delivery systems that are capable of sustained and controlled drug release, minimizing the side effects, and ensuring the activity and efficient delivery of drugs to the target tissue.
The degradation of one of the commercially important hydrogel based on acrylic acid and acryl amide, (acrylic acid-co-acryl amide) hydrogels, by means of ultrasound irradiation and its combination with heterogeneous ($TiO_2$) was investigated. 24 kHz of ultrasound irradiation was provided by a sonicator, while an ultraviolet source of 16 W was used for UV irradiation. The extent of sonolytic degradation increased with increasing ultrasound power (in the range 30-80 W). $TiO_2$ sonophotocatalysis led to complete (acrylic acid-co-acryl amide) hydrogels degradation with increasing catalyst loading, while, the presence of $TiO_2$ in the dark generally had little effect on degradation. Therefore, emphasis was totally on the sonolytic and sonophotocatalytic degradation of hydrogels and a synergy effect was calculated for combined degradation procedures (Ultrasound and Ultraviolet) in the presence of $TiO_2$ nanoparticles. $TiO_2$ sonophotocatalysis was always faster than the respective individual processes due to the enhanced formation of reactive radicals as well as the possible ultrasound-induced increase of the active surface area of the catalyst. A kinetics model based on viscosity data was used for estimation of degradation rate constants at different conditions and a negative order for the dependence of the reaction rate on total molar concentration of (acrylic acid-co-acryl amide) hydrogels solution within the degradation process was suggested.
