  • This study collects and analyzes data on educational philosophy and method for domestic and overseas alternative schools. This information is then applied to educational purpose and curriculum for a home economics curriculum that develops unique characteristics for Korean alternative education. This study collected and analyzed the characteristics of educational content and educational elements from two renowned alternative schools: Waldorf School in Germany and Summer Hill in the United Kingdom. The research results were as follows. First, it is necessary to create new word instead of using the term 'alternative education'. Second, among characteristics of Korean home economics curriculum, 'practical problem-solving ability', 'independent living ability', and 'relation forming ability' should be utilized to create a school with an independent curriculum and to establish a unique brand value. Third, time investment on instructor education should be made to cultivate competent and charming instructors as the center of a school. Lastly, school education should manage student's life at school and after graduation. The school and instructor should provide alternative education while thinking they are responsible for 50 years of a student's future life. This study helps show that alternative education is not perceived as a superficial and generalized education and that Korean alternative education can find similar characteristic to those of overseas cases.

  • he purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of body weight and body image perception on body image satisfaction of female junior high school students in Seoul. We further examined if body image satisfaction was related to obesity stress, weight control attitudes. From the 327 students surveyed, 6.1% were overweight and 38.8% of subjects were underweight. Over half of the subjects (54.4%) considered themselves to be more fat than their actual body shape. This manifested itself in low body satisfaction. Subjects less satisfied with their body shape suffered from high stress about obesity, were much more interested in weight control programs, and had more experience in weight control attempts. Among the subjects with low body image satisfaction, 25.7 % of them had eating disorder. It is our suggestion that school curriculum should include proper nutritional programmes to help students correctly recognize their body shape and to maintain healthy weight.

  • The dual aims of this study were i) to explore the effectiveness of an assessment method that can measure the competencies learned through high school home economics and ii) develop a competency-based assessment framework for high school home economics, including components of competency-based assessment, item development system, and other elements. The study involved the following stages: literature analysis, draft development, concretization, validity verification, and final version. Based on the results of the literature analysis and expert deliberation, a competency-based assessment framework for high school home economics was developed which comprised three dimensions: 'core idea' × 'process' × 'context and value'. Based on this, an item analysis table was presented to systematize various activities for the competency-based assessment of high school home economics, following which a holistic rubric suitable for competency assessment tasks was proposed by referring to the newly developed 'process' dimension assessment criteria. This study is significant in that it is the first to propose a competency-based assessment framework that systematically presents a variety of assessment activities. These will facilitate the development of assessment standards and tools that teachers can refer to or trust in the changing school environment due to the introduction of the standard-based assessment system based on a high school credit system, and the guarantee of a minimum achievement level.
