Exploring Reasoning Patterns of Students' Scientific Thinking, Inquiry Activities in Textbook, and Examination Items

  • Scientific reasoning is one of the main concerns in current science education. This study have tried to answer on the question whether Korean science education has the potential to help improve of students' ability to think scientifically. Therefore, the present study investigated the relationship between reasoning patterns evident in science textbook and science examination items, and students' scientific reasoning skills across grades in Korea. 1975 subjects (1022 females and 953 males) were administered in the Lawson's Test of Scientific Reasoning skills. Forty seven science textbooks and 240 assessment instrument were analyzed by several scientific reasoning keys. Scientific reasoning patterns were adopted from Lawson's classification which characterized the patterns as the empirical-inductive and the hypothetical-deductive. This study found that reasoning patterns evident in textbook analyses and assessment instrumental items do not evidentce the potential to stimulate the development of students' reasoning skill. In order to improve the students' abilities to think and achieve, higher levels of reasoning must be included in the science textbook and examination. Further, some of scientific reasoning processes, such as generating hypotheses, designing experiments, and logical prediction, were not found in science textbooks and test items in Korean secondary schools. This study also discussed the educational implication of these results and further studies about to develop student's reasoning ability.

  • The purpose of the study was to design and develop the performance assessment problems and the rubric of holistic evaluation approach for elementary school students in higher levels (6 graders). Problems include 6 tasks related to all content areas such as number and operation, etc. In addition, the results show the analyses of children's problem solving process and investigate how the performance assessment problems could be developed in order to develop children's higher-order thinking and problem solving skills.

과학적 탐구 사고력의 3단계 선다형 평가 연구 (Development of the Three-tier Test Items for the Thinking Skills of the Scientific Inquiry)

  • 본 연구의 3단계 선다형 평가 문항은 과학적 결과와 그 결과가 나온 과정 또 그러한 과정에 관계된 과학적 개념을 함께 물어 봄으로써 과학적 탐구 사고력을 의미있게 평가할 수 있고 객관식 문항형태이지만 객관식 평가의 단점인 추측의 요인을 주관식 응답에 준하여 거의 제거할 수 있다고 판단된다. 오랜 기간동안 1단계 4지선다형 또는 5지 선다형 시험에 익숙해 있던 학생들은 3단계 선다형 문항에 매우 적용하기 어렵겠고 교사들 또한 문항을 제작하는데 많은 시간과 노력이 필요하겠지만 평가가 학생들의 학습에 미치는 영향을 고려한다면 3단계 선다형 문항의 현장 도입은 절실히 필요하다. 이의 도입은 학생들의 탐구사고력의 신장에 큰 기여를 할 것으로 판단된다.

One Instructor에 의해 진행된 Modified Problem-Based Learning 교육기법 평가 (Evaluation of Modified Problem-Based Learning Facilitated by One Instructor)

  • Background: Problem-based learning (PBL) has introduced as an important part of pharmacy education in Korea as it is effective method to help students gain and apply knowledge with development of problem-solving, critical-thinking, and decision-making skills. In order to provide the effective PBL, a number of trained facilitators and suitable PBL rooms are required. However, these become a barrier in Korea as most pharmacy schools have one or two faculty members who majored in clinical pharmacy. Objective: This study was performed to implement and evaluate a modified PBL in gastrointestinal (GI) pharmacotherapy class facilitated by one instructor. Methods: A general information of traditional PBL for 6 hours through 3 days is introduced before initiating GI pharmacotherapy class. After 3 hour-GI pharmacotherapy classes for 6 weeks, modified PBL was implemented with one instructor to facilitate PBL for four small groups with 19 pharmacy students simultaneously. Modified PBL was incorporated with weekly mini-case discussion and presentation. Results: Students completed 15-question survey to evaluate modified PBL course, student performance, group performance, and facilitator performance. Eighty-four percent of students answered modified PBL was helpful to understand what they have learned. Mean score in group performance was higher than that of individual performance during modified PBL course. Overall, students reported modified PBL was useful in knowledge building. Conclusion: Modified PBL model without individual group facilitators in one classroom helped students to achieve self-directed, independent learning skills in an interactive and engaging environment.

문제 해결력 향상을 위한 반성적 사고 촉진 교수 학습 프로그램의 개발 및 적용 (Development and Application of the Learning Program for Improving Problem Solving Ability through Stimulation of Reflective Thinking)

  • We examined the strategies to stimulate the reflective thinking using science notebook for the improvement of problem solving ability which is one of the core skills for the future. The strategies we derived have four steps which are input, output, solving mission and reflection as my own mirror. We applied the strategies to the 6th grade class for autumn semester in order to examine the students learning process and the result. We could observe that students looked into their own learning and had a time to look back their activities in the class. We could also confirmed that science notebook would be effective to improve the problem solving as stimulating the reflective thinking. In addition, we could specify the strategy of using science notebook in the class. At a 'input' stage, students should be able to choose their own learning style as their preference and teacher need to give them proper feedback. Interaction with peers should be emphasized during the activities as 'question attack' and 'question defense' in 'output' stage and 'solving mission' stage. You should suggest the students various method to record their thought from looking back their classroom activities instead of mere writing. We also examine the students achievement from the students' notebook and Meta Cognitive Awareness test. As a result, students who had studied using science notebook showed statistically meaningful higher achievement than controlled students.

이공계 여대생과 기업의 NCS 기반 직업기초능력 중요도 인식 및 평가에 의한 R-WeSET 프로그램 운영의 시사점 (Operational Implication of R-WeSET Program through Women Students and Companies' Perception and Assessment on the Basis of NCS Key Competency)

  • This study aims to deduce operational implication of R-WeSET program through women students in science & engineering and companies's perception and assessment on the basis of NCS key competency. The significant results are as follows. Firstly, companies and women students in science & engineering share a similar perception on importance of NCS key competencies. The programs should be reviewed and improved for women students who are truly aware of companies' needs. Secondly, the main areas of NCS key competency that are poor in companies' perception are 'positive thinking & drive', 'creativity & challenge spirit', 'communication skills' and 'problem-solving skills'. To enhance these weak skills, activating the actual programs such as "Convergence Design Camp", "Field Adaptability Improvement" and developing the new communication program are required. Lastly, most of women students have attained the satisfying result from "Field Competency Reinforcement Program". Especially, "Industry Field Training" shared the great progresses on all skills of key competency, hence why the progressive model should be developed in the future. This study figures out who's the right person for the 4th Industrial Revolution era, producing a meaningful result in order to change in the higher education system of women students and to grow human resources who will contribute to the community and company.

초등 수리 논술 교수-학습 자료 개발 연구 -초등학교 3학년을 중심으로- (A Study of Developing Teaching & Learning Materials for Elementary Mathematical Essay -For the Elementary School 3rd Grade-)

  • 논술에서 요구되는 능력, 즉 논술 능력은 기본적으로 이해력, 논리적이고 창의적인 사고력, 표현력과 같은 고등사고능력이다. 그러나 이러한 논술 능력은 단기간에 신장되지 않는다. 더욱이 수학은 계열성이 강한 학문으로 이러한 능력의 신장을 위해서는 초등학교 저학년 때부터 차근차근 단계에 맞게 준비해야하는 것은 어찌 보면 당연한 일이다. 그러나 현재 초등 수리 논술에 대한 용어의 정의가 없어 사교육 시장을 중심으로 무분별하게 초등 수리 논술이라는 용어가 사용되고 있다. 초등학교는 1학년부터 6학년까지 다양한 발달단계의 학생들이 모여 있는 곳이다. 초등 논술이 입시논술과 그 성격과 지도방향이 다르듯 초등 수리 논술 또한 그 성격과 지도 방향이 달라야 한다. 논술 능력은 단기간에 완성되는 것이 아니므로 어릴 때부터 꾸준한 연습이 필요하며, 더욱 중요한 것은 흥미를 잃지 않도록 하는 것이다. 따라서 초등 수리 논술의 올바른 개념을 정립하고, 성격과 지도방향을 설정하여 후속연구를 활발히 해야 할 필요성이 있다.

열린 수학 학습을 위한 게임의 교육적 활용 가능성 탐색 (An exploratory study of the Educational Simulation Games for open mathematic learning)

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the applicability of educational games to open mathematic learning and consideration to the position of educational games in mathmatical education as powerful technology. For these purposes, previous literatures about games are reviewed. The concept of simulation games are defined and explore the characteristics of games includings game structure and process. And some typical educational games - Israel games, ORDA - are introduced. The main focus of the deliberation and survey of previous literatures is educational games as meaningful learning medium of mathematics and other subjuct matters. Especially educational games take a meaningful role for an implication of applicability of games especially for higher order thinking skills like problem solving, decision making, and creativity. To realize this alternative learning method of mathematics, first of all the attituce of teachers are have to change and accumulate field studies.

워터폴 모델을 적용한 앱 인벤터 프로그래밍 교재개발 연구 (A Study on Development of Teaching Materials for App Inventor Programming Using the Waterfall Model)

  • 본 연구는 프로그래밍 교육에서 앱 인벤터 교육용 프로그램의 활용 가능성을 고찰하고 기존 프로그래밍 교육의 한계를 극복하기 위한 초등학생을 위한 프로그래밍 교재를 개발하였다. 스마트기기 프로그램을 통하여 학습 동기를 강화하였고 STEAM적 요소를 가미하고 앱 인벤트 프로그래밍 학습 내용을 학생들의 실생활적인 상황 제시와 소프트웨어 개발과정을 따라가면서 보다 논리적이고 체계적인 학습이 이루어지도록 개발하였다. 프로그래밍 과정에서 소프트웨어 개발이론 워터폴 모델을 도입하여 학생들의 소프트웨어 개발자의 사고과정을 따라가게 함으로써 기존의 교재가 가지는 단순 프로그램 언어와 관련된 지식의 습득에서 벗어나 학생들의 창의성과 문제해결력, 협동 사고력 등 고차원적인 사고력을 신장시키고자 하였다.

컴퓨팅 사고력 향상을 위한 문제 중심학습 기반 인공지능 교육 방안 (A Study on the PBL-based AI Education for Computational Thinking)

  • 4차 산업혁명 시대가 도래하면서 인공지능에 대한 교육이 활발하게 진행되고 있다. 그러나 기존의 강의식 교육은 지식의 전달을 목적으로 두고 있어 인공지능 분야에서 요구하는 능동적인 문제해결 능력과 인공지능 활용능력을 기르는 데 어려움을 겪는다. 본 논문에서는 이를 해결하기 위해 학습자가 제시된 문제를 해결하는 과정에서 학습이 이루어지는 문제 중심학습 기반 교육 방안을 제안한다. 학습자들에게 제공되는 문제는 완성된 하나의 프로젝트이다. 이 프로젝트는 3가지 종류로 구성된다. 분류 모델, 분류 모델의 학습 데이터, 분류된 결과에 따라 실행될 블록 코드. 해당 프로젝트는 동작은 하지만 각각의 구성요소들이 낮은 동작 수준을 보이도록 설계되어 있다. 이를 해결하기 위해 학습자들은 테스팅을 통해 프로젝트의 문제점을 찾고 토론을 통해 해결책을 찾아 좀 더 높은 동작 수준으로 개선하는 과정을 거치며 컴퓨팅 사고력 향상을 기대할 수 있다.
