  • This study proposes an educational direction to be followed by the clothing departments of Korea's specialized high schools in order to help achieve high levels of job placements and to strengthen their students' competitiveness. A comparison was made of the curricula in Korea's specialized high schools and in several fashion schools in other countries including the United States, Italy, France, Taiwan, and Japan. To this end, publicly available educational records were retrieved from domestic school documentation, vocational high school portals, and domestic/overseas school web sites, and were then reviewed. The archival data extracted from these sources shows that the curricula of the three chosen domestic schools uniformly focus on foundational courses such as general computer skills, general design, accounting principles, design principles, and drawing, as well as practical courses such as the design of western clothing, fashion design, fashion CAD, management of clothing material, design of Korean clothing, and knitting. Unlike these standardized courses, it was found that overseas fashion schools provide a more technically-advanced and design-focused education based on the interests of the individual student. Moreover, their education system nurtures the students' creativity through adequate field experience and history/language education. The findings of this study suggest that Korean specialized high schools should find a way to accommodate their students' interests and to provide them with personalized fashion education by adopting a more flexible curriculum. An educational line that considers the individual student's aptitudes and career path will help foster creativity and novel ideas, which, in turn, will contribute to the development of the fashion industry.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the actual conditions and operational problems of Health Promotion Model School' in high school. Methods: We conducted a content analysis of 2014 results report and staffs' responses of five high schools among 85 'Health Promotion Model Schools' led by Ministry of Education from 2012 to 2014. Results: The study examined the operational process of health promoting schools in five stages; system development, needs survey & current status survey, school health policy development, program development & execution, and evaluation. Every step was found to be inadequate. In addition, the study discovered three key factors in operating health promoting schools and examined the status of each factor; connection with the curriculum, connection with the community, and consensus among members. Three factors were also applied poorly. Compared to elementary school, high school showed a lack of all respects. Health promoting school staffs have faced difficulties in linking community resources, organizing and operating a working committee, conducting surveys and assessing health problems, preparing self-assessment or external evaluation, and developing strategies and programs. In order to solve the operational problems, active cooperation of all teachers is urgent. Conclusion: 'Health Promotion Model School' conducted in high school is not considered to have faithfully implemented WHO's concept of health promoting school. In the future, incentive policies for health promoting school teachers should be actively reviewed.

  • The purpose of this study is to provide the fundamental data to improve a school building through comparing and analyzing facilities of high schools located in Gyeonggi - do Province on the basis of the Design Indicator for the Korean Educational Buildings. Two types of high schools were examined for this study. Some of them are high schools selected by Korean Ministry of Education as a school equipped with superior facilities and the others are high schools equipped with general facilities. 8 items such as safety, comfort, the function of education, utilization, the public, eco-friendliness, technology performance, economical efficiency were examined by 5 point Likert scale. Findings showed that all facilities of both types of high schools received high ratings in terms of safety, utilization, and technology performance. However, the evaluation index on 'various used outdoor space' and 'public buildings harmonized with surroundings' of the education function of both types of high schools was low, which implies that the facility related to the education function needs to be improved. It infers that facilities are simplified and harmony with surroundings disappears when altering the design of the school building due to the convenience of building and the problem of the budget. Therefore, these need to be primarily controlled. Additionally, in high schools with general facilities, the evaluation index on 'aesthetic interior and exterior design of comfort', 'the responsive space to the demand for teaching and learning of the function of education', and eco-friendless were so low that these factors need to be considered when designing the school building.

  • This study aimed to investigate current nutrition education and effective plans for nutrition teachers in schools. Data were collected by a face-to-face questionnaire. Surveyed schools were elementary, middle, and high schools at percentages of 32.4%, 35.1%, and 32.4%, respectively. Percentage of nutrition education was above 90%, whereas off-line education was very uncommon in middle (8.3%) and high schools (27.3%) compared with elementary schools (63.6%), (p<0.05). Satisfaction of nutrition education was also very low in middle (7.7%) and high schools (8.3%) when compared with elementary schools (41.7%), (p<0.05). The main reason for this was due to 'work overload of mealing service (44.4%)' and 'insufficient time of students (25.9%)'. Effective education plans were as follows: beginning of education and education scale were 'elementary school (67.6%)' and 'below 20 people (81.1%)', and the most preferred counterplan was 'development of diverse education programs (4.81 score)' > 'systematic education process (4.76 score)' > 'professional nutrition education (4.51 score)'. Most important duty was 'nutrition education and consultation (51.4%)', although it achieved the lowest satisfaction at a score of 2.46. Overall analysis, demand and awareness of nutrition teachers for nutrition education were very high. Therefore, an institutional strategy and environmental improvements are required by setting up curriculum subjects and developing diverse education programs for systematic nutrition education.

For this, the survey was conducted targeting 286 specialty subject teachers in technical specialized high schools and meister high schools. And the results are as follow: First, the specialty subject teachers in the technical specialized high schools and meister high schools recognized that the positive expectation effect can be obtained through the NCS-based vocational education curriculum and the NCS-based vocational education curriculum should very much be applied to the school curriculum but it is impractical to organize and operate the NCS-based vocational education curriculum as the school curriculum from 2016. Third, the specialty subject teachers in the technical specialized high schools and meister high schools recognized that tools for practice should be reorganized and expanded, the number of students targeting practical classes should be reduced by 15 to 20 persons, teachers' field education capability should be strengthened, supply and demand of teachers should be supported, industrial and academic cooperation-based field-centered education should be reinforced, and support of the NCS-based teaching materials to be textbooks should be required in terms of operating schools to operate the NCS-based vocational curriculum effectively. Support of finding jobs and field education which correspond with the NCS-based vocational curriculum should be provided, field instruction by ability of the national competency standards should be supported, field practice education projects about the NCS-based vocational curriculum should be provided and introduction and operation of the industrial employee performance evaluation system should be required in terms of the support plans of relevant organizations.

  • This study compared the job satisfaction and job importance of school dietitians according to various school types in Sejong. One hundred and twenty-six school dietitians working in kindergartens (n=36), elementary schools (n=42), middle schools (n=22), and high schools (n=26) participated in this questionnaire survey. The subjects were divided into four groups according to the school types. Half of the subjects were over 41 years of age, with 64.3% graduating from graduate school. The percentage of nutrition teachers was the highest in middle schools at 95.4%, followed by the elementary school at 90.5% and high school at 73.1%, whereas 100% of the kindergarten dietitians were not nutrition teachers (P<0.001). The percentage of the running status of nutrition education classes/activities was lowest in kindergartens (P<0.001). The job satisfaction score in the job itself area was significantly lower in kindergartens and high schools than in middle schools (P<0.01). The satisfaction scores of human relationships, working environment, personnel evaluation, and welfare did not differ significantly among the schools. As for the Job importance, the scores of nutrition counseling were significantly lower in middle school than in elementary and high schools (P<0.05). In cooking and distribution management, high schools were less important than other school levels (P<0.05). These findings highlight the need for the placement of nutrition teachers in kindergarten to promote nutrition education, the reduction of workload for school dietitians/nutrition teachers and additional placement of dietitians by the appropriate workload such as the number of people and meals to serve.
