  • The state-of-the-art H.264/AVC standard was designed for the lossy video coding so that it could not yield the best performance for lossless video coding. In this paper, we propose two efficient intra lossless coding methods by embedding a pixel-wise prediction into the H.264/AVC. One is based on the pixel-wise prediction for the residual signal of the H.264/AVC intra Prediction and the other suggests a newly additional intra prediction mode for the conventional intra prediction. We found that the proposed lossless coding algorithms could achieve approximately $12%{\sim}25%$ more bit saving compared to the H.264/AVC FRExt high profile for several test sequences in terms of a compression ratio.

  • The multi-view video is a collection of multiple videos capturing the same scene at different viewpoints. Thus, there is an advantage of providing for user oriented view pointed video. This paper is suggested that the compression performance of layered depth image structure expression has improved by using more improved method. We confirm the data size of layer depth image by encoding H.264 technology and the each performances of reconstructed images. The H.264/AVC technology has easily extended for H.264 technology of video contents. In this paper, we suggested that layered depth structure can be applied for an efficient new image contents. We show that the huge data size of multi-view video image is decreased, and the higher performance of image is provided, and there is an advantage of for stressing error restoring.

  • In this paper, we propose a new method for improving the H 264 encoding process and motion estimation part. Our approach is a method to reduce the encoding running time through the omission of reference frame in the mode selection process of H 264 and an improvement of SAD computing process. To evaluate the proposed method, we used the H 264 standard image of QCIF size and TIN 4:2:0 format. Experimental results show that proposed SAD algorithm 1 can improve the speed of encoding runnung time by an average of 4.7% with a negligible degradation of PSNR. However, SAD algorithm 2 can improve the speed of encoding runnung time by an average of 9.6% with 0.98dB degradation of PSNR.

  • To achieve flexible visual content adaption for multimedia communications, the ISO/IEC MPEG & ITU-T VCEG form the JVT to develop SVC amendment for the H.264/AVC standard. JVT uses inter-layer prediction as well as inter prediction and intra prediction that are provided in H.264/AVC to remove the redundancy among layers. The main goal consists of designing inter-layer prediction tools that enable the usage of as much as possible base layer information to improve the rate-distortion efficiency of the enhancement layer. But inter layer prediction causes the computational complexity to be increased. In this paper, we proposed an efficient residual prediction. In order to reduce the computational complexity while maintaining the high coding efficiency. The proposed residual prediction uses modified interpolation that is defined in H.264/AVC SVC.

  • In this paper, we present a video shot retrieval algorithm in H.264/AVC compression domain. Unlike previous standards such as MPEG-2 and 4, H.264/AVC supports a variable block size for motion compensation. Therefore, existing video retrieval algorithms exploiting the motion vectors in MPEG-2 and 4 domains are not appropriate for H.264/AVC. So, we devise a method to project motion vectors with larger than $4{\times}4$ block sizes into those for the smallest $4{\times}4$ blocks. It also uses correlations among features for the measure of similarity. Experimental results with standard videos of 10558 frames and commercial videos of 48161 frames show that the proposed method yields ANMRR less than 0.2.

  • H.264 is the prominent video coding standard in various applications such as real-time streaming and digital multimedia broadcasting, since it provides enhanced compression performance, error resilience tools, and network adaptation. Compression efficiency of H.264 has been improved, however, it requires more computing and memory access than traditional methods. In this paper we proposed adaptive intra fast algorithm for real-time video surveillance system reducing the encoding complexity of H264/A VC. For this aim, temporal interrelationship between macroblock in the previous and the current frame is used to decide the encoding mode of macroblock fast. As a result, though video quality was deteriorated a little, less than 0.04dB, and bit rate was somewhat increased in suggested method, however, proposed method improved encoding time significantly and, in particular, encoding time of an image with little changes of neighboring background such as surveillance video was more shortened than traditional methods.

  • H.264/AVC is a video coding standard of ITU-T and ISO/IEC, and widely spreads its application due to its high compression ratio more than twice that of MPEG-2 and high image quality. In this paper, we explained Intra Prediction in H.264/AVC, which is able to achieve higher compressing efficiency from correlation removal of adjacent samples in spatial domain, and proposed efficient Intra Predictor architecture design for H.264/AVC decoder. The proposed system reduced computation cycle using processing element and precomputation processing element and also reduced the number of access to external memory using efficient register. We designed the proposed system with Verilog-HDL and verified with suitable test vector. The proposed Intra Predictor achieved about 60% cycle reduction comparing with existing Intra Predictors.

  • The H.264 standard is widely used due to the high compression rate and quality. The deblocking filter of the H.264 standard improves the quality of images by eliminating blocking artifacts of pictures, and it requires a lot of computation. We propose a new hardware architecture for the deblocking filter with pipelined architecture, 1-D filters which support both horizontal and vertical filtering and efficient memory management. Four memory blocks are configured for the efficient storage and access of the current macroblock and adjacent referenced sub-macroblocks, and the pixel data from the motion compensation unit can be transferred without waiting during the computation cycles of the deblocking filter. The number of computation cycles and the hardware area are reduced using the proposed architecture, and the performance of the H.264 decoder is improved. We design the deblocking filter using Verilog-HDL and implement using an FPGA. The designed deblocking filter can be used for decoding HD quality images at 77 MHz.

  • In this paper, we propose a novel hardware architecture for an intra-prediction, integer transform, quantization, inverse integer transform, inverse quantization, and mode decision module for the macroblock engine of a new video coding standard, H.264. To reduce the cycle of intra prediction, transform/quantization, and inverse quantization/inverse transform of H.264, a reduction method for cycle overhead in the case of I16MB mode is proposed. This method can process one macroblock for 927 cycles for all cases of macroblock type by processing $4{\times}4$ Hadamard transform and quantization during $16{\times}16$ prediction. This module was designed using Verilog Hardware Description Language (HDL) and operates with a 54 MHz clock using the Hynix $0.35 {\mu}m$ TLM (triple layer metal) library.

  • H.264, a recently proposed international video coding standard, has adopted context-based adaptive variable length coding (CAVLC) as the entropy coding tool in the baseline profile. By combining an adaptive variable length coding technique with context modeling, we can achieve a high degree of redundancy reduction. However, CAVLC in H.264 has weakness that the correct prediction rate of the variable length coding (VLC) table is low in a complex area, such as the boundary of an object. In this paper, we propose a VLC table prediction scheme considering multiple reference blocks; the same position block of the previous frame and the neighboring blocks of the current frame. The proposed algorithm obtains the new weighting values considering correctness of the VLC table for each reference block. Using this method, we can enhance the prediction rate of the VLC table and reduce the bit-rate.
