  • Sidewall curl is the curvature that results from non-uniform through-thickness strain present in the sheet stamping process which involves material flow over a die radius. In order to understand and control curl for tight fit-up tolerances, an analytical model that can provide a reliable measure for the amount of curl would be very helpful. In this study, a model is developed based on the moment-curvature relationship during bending-under-tension operations. For the verification of analytical model, sidewall curl is experimentally measured after deformation of a strip using a bending-under-tension test system. The results show a consistent relationship between the theoretically predicted value and the experimentally obtained one, especially in regions of high curl.

  • The purposes of this study were to compare abductor hallucis (AbdH) muscle activity during toe curl exercise according to position of interphalangeal joint (IPJ). Fifteen healthy subjects with neutral foot were recruit for this study. All subjects performed toe curl exercise with towel while maintaining the IPJ in flexion (condition 1) and extension (condition 2). Toe curl exercise with towel was perform three trials for five second periods in each condition. Surface electromyography (EMG) activities were recorded from three muscles (AbdH, tibialis anterior, peroneous longus) in each condition. EMG activity was normalized to the value of maximal voluntary isometric contraction (%MVIC). The EMG activities acoording to position of IPJ were compared using a paired t-test. This study showed that the EMG activity of AbdH during toe curl exercise with IPJ extension significantly increased compared to those during toe curl exercise with IPJ flexion (p<.05). However, the EMG activity of tibialis anterior and peroneus longus were not significantly different between the conditions (p>.05). These results suggest that toe curl exercise with towel must be performed with extension of IPJ in order to strengthen intrinsic muscle in subjects with overuse injuries related to excessive pronation.

In order to understand and control sidewall curl for tight fit-up tolerances, an analytical model that can provide a reliable measure for the amount of curl would be very helpful. In this study, a model is developed based on the moment-curvature relationship during bending-under-tension operations. The analytical model includes the variables of applied tensile force, the yield strength, the elastic modulus, the bending radius, and the sheet thickness, which are the primary factors affecting sidewall curl during sheet stamping operations. For the accuracy of analytical model, six possible deformation patterns are proposed on the basis of material properties and bending geometries.

  • This paper presents a numerical study on multigrid algorithms of V-cycle type for problems posed in the Hilbert space H(curl) in three dimensions. The multigrid methods are designed for discrete problems originated from the discretization using the hexahedral Nédélec edge element of the lowest-order. Our suggested methods are associated with smoothers constructed by substructuring based on domain decomposition methods of nonoverlapping type. Numerical experiments to demonstrate the robustness and the effectiveness of the suggested algorithms are also provided.

  • Despite its importance the control of roller leveling has primarily relied on the operator's experience and on operation tables. In order to effectively eliminate various shape defects, the optimal leveling condition for a specific mode of plate deformation needs to be determined as well as a careful evaluation as to whether or not the condition is still appropriate for other modes or not. A numerical model, which considers both computation efficiency and accuracy, has been developed. The variations of residual stress are studied according to the entry and the delivery intermeshes, respectively. The camber deformation decreases linearly as the entry intermesh increases. In contrast the curl deformation does not vary directly with the entry intermesh. Therefore, the optimum intermesh values need to be determined in order to simultaneously minimize both the camber and the curl deformation.

  • Whitefly-transmitted geminiviruses (WTGs) are economically important pathogens causing serious damage on tomato and chilli pepper in Indonesia. Geminiviruses are readily transmitted by its insect vector, sweetpotato whitefly (Bemisia tabaci). However, greenhouse whitefly (Trialeurodes vaporariorum), another species of whitefly, is commonly found together with B. tabaci in the field. Incidence of yellow leaf curl disease in tomato and chilli pepper is probably correlated with the population of whitefly complex. It is becoming important to find the role of T. vaporariorum in the spread of the disease. Therefore, research is conducted to study the characteristic relationship between tomato leaf curl begomovirus (ToLCV) and two species of whitefly. The two species of whitefly, B. tabaci and T. vaporariorum, was capable to transmit ToLCV although it was evidenced that B. tabaci is more effective as insect vector of ToLCV in tomato and chilli pepper. A single B. tabaci was able to transmit ToLCV to tomato with a minimum acquisition and inoculation access period of 10 h. Transmission of ToLCV by T. vaporariorum required at least 10 insects per plant with a minimum acquisition and inoculation access period of 24 h. The transmission efficiency will increase with longer acquisition and inoculation access period of the insect and the higher number of insect per plant.

  • Bemisia tabaci Genn. is an important pest worldwide because of its ability to cause damage by direct feeding and its role as a vector of some viruses including geminiviruses. The first report of Tobacco leaf curl virus (TLCV), a Geminiviruses, in Indonesia was in 1932 when the virus was found infecting tobacco plants in Central Java. The characteristic symptoms of TLCV included upward curling of the leaf edge, vein thickening, and sometimes the occurrence of enation on the underside of the leaves. Basic studies were carried out to elucidate the characteristics of TLCV transmission by its vector, B. tabaci. A single whitefly was able to transmit the virus and the efficiency of transmission was increased when the number of adult whiteflies was increased up to 20 per plant. Inoculation access period of 1 h could cause transmission up to 20% and the optimum inoculation access period was 12 h. Acquisition access period of 30 minutes resulted in 70% transmission while 1(10% transmission occurred with a 24-h acqui-sition access period. The virus was proven to be persistently but not transovarially transmitted. Discrete fragments of 1.6 kb were observed when polymerase chain reaction method was applied to detect the virus in viruliferous nymphs and individual adults of B. tabaci, while no bands were obtained from non-viruliferous nymphs and adults.

  • This paper is concerned with a simulation-based process design for the tension levelling of metallic strips based on the elasto-plastic finite element analysis with reduced integration and hourglass control. The tension levelling process is performed to elongate the strip plastically in combination of tensile and bending strain by a controlled manner so that all longitudinal fibers in the strip have an approximately equal amount of length and undesirable strip shapes are corrected to the flat shape. The analysis deals with a method for calculating the quantitative level of the curl to investigate the roll arrangements and intermesh suitable to elimination of the curl. The analysis provides the information about the intermesh effect on the amount, the tension effect and distribution of the strain as well as the stress in order to determine the amount of elongation for correction of the irregular shape. The desired elongation is referred to determine the number of work rolls and the value of tension. Especially, the analysis investigates tile effect of the mesh size in the non-steady state finite element analysis on the amount and distribution of the strain.

  • This paper aims to evaluate quantitatively the springback characteristics that evolve in the sheet metal forming of an S-rail in order to understand the reasons of shape inaccuracy and to find a remedy. The geometrical springback is classified into six modes: angle change of punch and die shoulders, wall curl, ridge curl, section twist, and axial twist. The measuring method for each springback mode is suggested and quantitative measurements were made to determine the tendency towards shape accuracy. Forming experiments were conducted with four types of steel sheets that have different tensile strengths, which were 340MPa, 440MPa, 590MPa and 780MPa, in order to evaluate the effect of the tensile strength and the bead shape on the springback behavior. Springback tendencies show that they are greatly affected by the tensile strength of the sheet and the shape of the tools. Almost all springback modes except the section twist and the axial twist show a linearly increasing trend as the tensile strength of the sheet increases. The results can be used as basic data for design and for compensation of the press die geometry when forming high strength steels which exhibit large amounts of springback.
