  • The purpose of this study was to develop a motivational interviewing (MI) training program to improve competency in communication and to effect the evaluated changes that would occur in dental students' counseling techniques as result of the training in the program. The study proceeded through the program via role-play practice, which was explained effectively during the MI program training process. A convenience sample of 43 fourth-year dental hygiene students was recruited. Twenty-two students were randomly assigned to the intervention group and 21 to the control group in the order of recruitment. The theoretical lecture was delivered over 3 hours and the practice was done in parallel by applying cases occurring in clinic settings. The practice was technical training, partner practice, and small group practice. The intervention group received three hour MI lecture while the control group received no lecture. Evaluation through role-play practice was separated according to "researcher's viewpoint," "counselor's role viewpoint," and "patient's role viewpoint." The results of the analysis showed that the intervention group had higher MI skills and ability than the control group. Furthermore, program participants showed positive impressions to the MI training program. The use of coaching sessions improved the MI techniques and counseling skills of dental hygiene students learning MI. The effect of the application of the MI training program was that the MI training improved counseling skills and interviewing abilities. Moreover, continuous training and feedback enhanced MI techniques and core skills. Training using lectures in parallel with practice rather than education through theory alone improved students' techniques. Application of role play through the combined method of the MI program was confirmed by an effective training method.

The data was collected from the 10th to 24th of July in 2010. Statistical analysis of the results was carried out by means, frequencies, chi-square, t-test and multiple regression with SPSS/WIN 18.0 program. Results: There were significant differences in mobile phone addiction group and non-addiction group in regard to sex, school year, grades, mother' age, purpose of mobile phone use, activity after school, phone bill per month. Also There were significant differences in mother's rearing attitude and mother's communication between two groups. Conclusion: Mobile phone addiction among students is not serious, however, possibility of becoming an addict still remains. This study suggests that we have to educate them about proper mobile phone use in advance to prevent them from becoming a mobile phone addict in early stage. Therefore, we need to develop an educational program to prevent mobile phone addiction.

  • The present study employed a pretest-posttest quasi-experimental design to evaluate the effectiveness of a teacher education program for child care teachers. Twenty-seven teachers were randomly assigned to intervention and control groups with 12 and 17 teachers in each group. Teachers in the intervention group participated in the program. After termination of the program, differences between pre- and post-tests were examined in regards to teachers' emotional regulation, efficacy, parent-teacher communication and job satisfaction. There were four major findings. First, self-reported teachers'emotional regulation, teachers'efficacy and job satisfaction were significantly improved in the intervention group, but not in the control group. Second, parent-teacher communication difficulty was significantly reduced in the intervention group, but not in the control group. These findings emphasize the importance of the teachers' positive characteristics in improving the outcome of preschoolers.

  • Purpose: This study aimed to identify whether there is a difference between an online-based community psychiatric nursing practice program with the ARCS model and a conventional community psychiatric nursing practice program in promoting nursing students' learning motivation, knowledge of community psychiatric nursing, communication skills, and learning self-efficacy. Methods: This study used a quasi-experimental design with a non-equivalent control group. The participants were 44 nursing students at three nursing colleges in Gyeongsangbuk-do. The experimental group was provided the online-based community psychiatric nursing practice program with ARCS model, while the control group was provided the conventional community psychiatric nursing practice program from July 9, to September 3, 2022. Both groups received practice training 8 hours a day, 5 days two weeks. The collected data were analyzed using the exact χ2, Mann-Whitney U-test, and Quade's two-way ANCOVA with the IBM SPSS Statistics 28.0 program. Results: The results of the comparison of an experimental group training with the online-based community psychiatric nursing practice program with ARCS model and a control group training with the conventional community psychiatric nursing practice program showed that, there was no statistically significant difference between the two groups in learning motivation knowledge of community psychiatric nursing, and learning self-efficacy. However, communication skills were statistically significantly higher in the experimental group (F=6.23, p=.017). Conclusion: The online-based community psychiatric nursing practice program with ARCS model can be used as a substitute learning to improve community psychiatric nursing capabilities in situations when clinical practice is suspended due to infectious diseases such as coronavirus disease 2019 or when is a shortage of community psychiatric nursing practice institutions.

  • Purpose: This study explored the experiences of pregnant women with depressed mood participating in a group cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) program using video communication, based on Beck's cognitive theory. Methods: The participants were six pregnant women out of 13 women who had participated in an 8-session group CBT program using video communication for women with depressed mood (Edinburgh Postnatal Depression score of ≥9). Data were collected from February 20 through March 25, 2021. In-depth individual interviews were conducted through a video conferencing platform at 1 month post-baseline. Thematic analysis was done. Results: Three themes, 10 subthemes, and 38 concepts were derived from experiences of participating in the 4-week group CBT program (twice a week). The first theme, entitled "continuing realization" had subthemes of "a negative and instable self," "a selfish judgment that excludes others," and "a strong belief in self-control." The second theme, entitled "attempt to change for restoration" had subthemes of "shift to rational thinking," "freedom from suppressed beliefs," "tolerance of other people," and "courage for self-expression." The third theme, entitled "departure for a positive life," had subthemes of "emotional healing," "faith in oneself," and "reestablishing the criteria for happiness." Conclusion: Pregnant women with depressed mood expressed that continuing realizations and attempts to change supported their transition toward a positive direction of healing. Thus, they were able to change their distorted thinking into rational thinking through CBT using video communication. These findings support the use of group CBT using video communication with pregnant women who have depressed mood.

  • Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of a nursing education program for hyperglycemia patient care using standardized patients. Methods: This study used a nonequivalent control group pre-test and post-test non-synchronized design. A total of 50 senior university nursing students who had completed an adult nursing course participated in this study (experimental group, n=24; control group, n=26). This nursing education program was developed according to the stages of analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. The collected data were analyzed using χ2 -test, Fisher's exact test, independent t-test, paired t-test, and repeated measure ANOVA. Results: Significant differences were shown between the experimental and control groups in clinical performance ability (F=277.41, p<.001), communication skills (F=47.18, p<.001), self-efficacy (F=3.81, p=.031), and learning satisfaction (t=2.25, p=.033). Problem-solving ability was not statistically significant between the groups. Conclusion: The nursing education program for hyperglycemia patient care using standardized patients was effective in improving nursing students' clinical performance ability, communication skills, and learning satisfaction. Therefore, it is proposed that the education program developed in this study be used as part of an education program to enhance nursing students' abilities in caring for hyperglycemia patients.
