  • This paper describes the frequency dependence of the grounding impedance. In order to propose the evaluation method of the transient response of powered grounding systems, the grounding impedances were measured with varying the frequency of incoming currents by way of the variable frequency inverter and band pass filter. The magnitude and phase of the grounding impedance were analyzed in the frequency range of 20 [Hz]∼2.1[kHz]. The grounding impedance were increased with increasing the frequency of the test current. The grounding impedance at the frequency of 2[kHz] in the actual 22.9[kV] substation grounding system was approximately 3 times as large as the 60[Hz] grounding impedance. It was found that the frequency dependence of the grounding impedance is mainly subject to the inductive reactance of the grounding conductors. As a result, it is critical to determine the shape and size of grounding grid reducing the resultant inductance in grounding systems for lightning surge protection.

  • Seoul Metro and Seoul Metropolitan Rapid Transit Corp. have started installing screen doors at subway platforms to improve the environment of subways and prevent passengers' accidents since 2006. They are still installing screen doors at subway platforms and Metropolitan Rapid Transit Corporations in other areas are also proceeding with installment of screen doors or making preparations for it. Grounding is necessary for installing PSD systems. In case that PSD grounding is connected with existing electrical equipment grounding system, it was decided to install separate grounding for safe operation of PSD system and passenger safety. However, it's very difficult to install new grounding at the subway station compound. A way to improve this condition is that we proceed with grounding by composing grounding station by carbon grounding rod. This paper will mainly deal with how to design and construct carbon ground rod, which has been applied to PSD system grounding since 2006, including its experimental examples. In this paper, ways to secure ground resistance below 5 ohms, which is resistance necessary for PSD grounding, and to compose grounding system were also discussed. Furthermore, a ground test to check the ability to fulfill a role of PSD grounding system was conducted. As a result of applying carbon grounding module, PSD system is being operated without any problem and the installment of PSD system will be continuously expanded in the future. It's also thought that a way to integrate grounding of each functional room which has been installed at the subway station compound and to arrange equipotential grounding should be reviewed and performed promptly.

  • Grounding system insures a reference potential point for electric devices and also provides a low impedance path for fault currents or transient currents in the earth. The ground impedance as function of frequency is necessary for determining its performance since fault currents could contain a wide range of frequencies. In this paper, the grounding resistance, grounding impedance and transient grounding impedance are measured by using 3-point fall-of-potential method in order to analyse grounding characteristics of the copper and concrete rod grounding electrodes. An equivalent transfer function model of the ground impedance and transient grounding impedance are identified from the measured values by using ARMA method and evaluated by comparing the conventional grounding impedance.

  • Lightning and switching surges propagating through the grounding conductors lead to transient overvoltages, and electronic circuits in information technology systems are very susceptible to damage or malfunction from the electrical surges. Surge damages or malfunctions of electrical and electronic equipment may be caused by potential rises. To solve these problems, it is very important to evaluate the ground surface potential rises and hazardous voltages such as touch and step voltages at or near the grounding systems energized by electrical surges. In this paper, the performance of grounding systems against the surge current containing high frequency components on the basis of the actual-sized tests is presented. The ground surface potential rises and hazardous voltages depending on impulse currents for vertical or horizontal grounding electrodes are measured and analyzed. Also the touch and step voltages caused by the impulse currents are investigated. As a result, the ground surface potential rises, the touch and step voltages near the grounding electrodes are raised and the conventional grounding impedances are increased as the front time of the injected impulse currents is getting faster.

  • Most nuclear power plants now utilize solid grounded low voltage systems. For safety and reliability reasons, the low voltage (LV) high resistance grounding (HRG) system is also increasingly used in the pulp and paper, petroleum and chemical, and semiconductor industries. Fault detection is easiest and fastest with a solidly grounded system. However, a solidly grounded system has many limitations such as severe fault damage, poor reliability on essential circuits, and electrical noise caused by the high magnitude of ground fault currents. This paper will briefly address the strengths and weaknesses of LV grounding systems. An example of a low voltage HRG system in the LV system of a nuclear power plant will be presented. The HRG system is highly recommended for LV systems of nuclear power plants if sufficient considerations are provided to prevent nuisance tripping of ground fault relays and to avoid the deterioration of system reliability.

  • Recently, it is caused by environment change that is increased the number of lightning occurrence and the strength of lightning current is coming to be strong little by little. The performance of grounding system depends on how to construct. Specially the common grounding systems which uses the buried earth cable must be constructed by very well qualities because it is difficult to measure earth resistance and to manage the buried earth cable. Common grounding systems and independence grounding systems could be composed different. Against railway signalling equipment which like this is used from the environment lower part which is various it presents a standard grounding systems, and very it is hard job. We will present improvement through this paper that review grounding systems configuration condition of railway signalling equipment.

  • A design criterion of grounding systems is commonly based on the ground resistance measured with low frequency in Korea. When lightning surges which have high frequency components are injected into the grounding system, the grounding impedance is great]y different from the static grounding resistance. In order to investigate the effect of water resistivity on the high frequency performance of grounding systems, this paper presents the frequency-dependent admittance using water tank simulating the grounding system in different water resistivities. As a result, because of capacitive effect admittances and conductance are increased with increasing frequency in higher water resistivity of greater than 500[${\Omega}{\cdot}m$]. On the other hand, admittances and conductances are decreased with increasing frequency due to inductive effect in lower water resistivity of less than 500[${\Omega}{\cdot}m$]. The phase difference between the current and voltage increases in the range of 200[kHz] to 5[MHz]. Consequently, frequency-dependent performance of grounding systems is closely related to the soil resistivity, it is necessary to consider the effect of grounding system performance on the frequency and soil resistivity.

  • Electric power facilities must have effective grounding to provide means to carry electric current into the earth under fault conditions and to prevent damage of equipment, Ignition, and electrocution of presonnel. nuts paper present an algorithm called the Pattern Search method for the optimal parameters selection of the grounding system. Computer simulation results used the CDEGS grounding analysis program verifying the effects of the grounding system design parameters obtained from this method show that the grounding systems are adequately designed.

  • Electric shock is the accident caused by the current through a person or animal's body. That is characterized by the physiological effects. In this paper, we evaluate performance of protection against electric shocks for TT and TN grounding systems which are used by a low voltage consumer nowadays. The performance of protection against electric shocks for TT grounding system is very excellent in equipotential area of the third class grounding, but the performance is poor outside the equipotential area. The performance of protection against electric shocks for TN grounding system is excellent because the potential difference is less than 50V. Accordingly, the performance of protection for TN grounding system is good as compared with that for TT grounding System.

  • Measuring ground resistance has been a popular method of evaluation of the grounding electrode performance. If some portions of grounding electrodes are lost by corrosion, aging or other reasons, consequent deteriotation of the grounding performance would be resulted. It is one of the reasons why it is required to evaluate the performance of grounding systems regularly. However, in case of the electric facilities with multi-grounded system such as power substations with multi-grounded overhead ground wires and/or distribution line neutrals, it is practically difficult to disconnect neutrals or skywires from the substation grounding mesh for the ground resistance measurement. In this paper, a method for the grounding performance measurement of multi-grounded systems, which is based on the measuring ground current distributions, has been proposed. A field test results has shown the validity of the proposed test method.
