  • Recently, construction industry in Korea is considering of various approaches for improving productivity and thus enhancing the competitive capacity in the global market. To this end, Korean Ministry of Construction & Transportation has launched R&D project in the field of automation, information systems, high value-added techniques. Furthermore, a new era of cities such as U-city and Eco-city is coming due to the government strategy for developing the country. In the regards of methodological development and trends of construction projects stated above, conventional methods for managing the projects is not likely to guarantee the success. Especially, in the planning and maintenance phases of such large scale cities, a new paradigm should be introduced. We thought of it as 3D object based simulation system for city planning. This paper describes the concept of the system.

  • With the recent global trends in environmental preservation, the importance of sustainable construction is being highlighted in Korea. In particular, the trend is being discussed about life cycle of the apartment houses in various aspects. However the Korean construction market and housing policy have been increasingly focusing on supplier. Structures become progressively obsolete after a certain period, but their durability can be extended with proper maintenance management. Accordingly, if maintenance management on the structures is made efficiently, waste of construction energy and damage to the environment and economic loss due to early demolition and reconstruction can be effectively prevented.   • In a reinforced concrete structure, coupler construction is easier to install than jointing or welding reinforcing bars, so it is possible to work by one person. When constructing a reinforcing bar coupler, the coupler construction method must be different for each member that receives a large tensile force or a member that receives a small tensile strength. Various coupler products are used in the global construction market, and the quality, performance, and cost of reinforcing bar joints vary from product to product. This study compares and analyzes the quality and cost of representative rebar couplers according to the requirements using the quality house of QFD-HOQ. The case study presents a quality and cost improvements strategy through QFD-HOQ analysis of rebar couplers.

A Correlation Analysis between International Oil Price Fluctuations and Overseas Construction Order Volumes using Statistical Data (통계 데이터를 활용한 국제 유가와 해외건설 수주액의 상관성 분석)

  • This study investigates the impact of international oil price fluctuations on overseas construction orders secured by domestic and foreign companies. The analysis employs statistical data spanning the past 20 years, encompassing international oil prices, overseas construction orders from domestic firms, and new overseas construction orders from the top 250 global construction companies. The correlation between these variables is assessed using correlation coefficients(R), determination coefficients(R2), and p-values. The results indicate a strong positive correlation between international oil prices and overseas construction orders. The correlation coefficient between domestic overseas construction orders and oil prices is found to be 0.8 or higher, signifying a significant influence. Similarly, a high correlation coefficient of 0.76 is observed between oil prices and new orders from leading global construction companies. Further analysis reveals a particularly strong correlation between oil prices and overseas construction orders in Asia and the Middle East, potentially due to the prevalence of oil-related projects in these regions. Additionally, a high correlation is observed between oil prices and orders for industrial facilities compared to architectural projects. This suggests an increase in plant construction volumes driven by fluctuations in oil prices. Based on these findings, the study proposes an entry strategy for navigating oil price volatility and maintaining competitiveness in the overseas construction market. Key recommendations include diversifying project locations and supplier bases; utilizing hedging techniques for exchange rate risk management, adapting to local infrastructure and market conditions, establishing local partnerships and securing skilled local labor, implementing technological innovations and digitization at construction sites to enhance productivity and cost reduction The insights gained from this study, coupled with the proposed overseas expansion strategies, offer valuable guidance for mitigating risks in the global construction market and fostering resilience in response to international oil price fluctuations. This approach is expected to strengthen the competitiveness of domestic and foreign construction firms seeking success in the international arena.

  • Risk management is an important element for successful management of overseas construction projects. This study reports a case study in which we proposed a risk management planning and procedure for plant construction which can be applied throughout the project life cycle. We analyzed the risk management practices of Korean construction companies by applying the concept of the PRINCE2 method developed in the UK, and proposed a risk management planning and procedure with organizational structure and working process. The suggested risk management planning and procedure was applied to an overseas plant construction project, and produced good results. It is believed that the procedure suggested here can also be aplied to other companies to enhance the competency in the global construction market.

Potential of Helicopter MRO Business (헬기 MRO 비즈니스의 잠재력)

  • Since the global economic crisis in year 2008, the world civil helicopter market has been growing recently. According to the market outlook in the next decade, the demand of civil helicopter will be driven by the demand of Private & Corporate, Oil & Gas, Off-shore and EMS(Emergency Medical Service) usages. On the other side, the demand of military market will be driven by the modification and upgrading for life extension or performance enhancement than the new helicopter development for replacing old models. To summarize these situations, the demand of MRO(Maintenance, Repair & Overhaul) market has also been on the rise because of the demand due to above several usages in civil side and the life-extension in military side. Through the MRO market analysis for characteristics, developmental trends and a supply chain, this paper describes that the potential of MRO business is considerably large as a propulsive power of domestic helicopter industry. And also, it proposes the construction direction of MRO network because the domestic industry must make the developmental awareness and reliability a stepping-stone towards own helicopter.

  • Ensuring technical ability is essential in the construction industry to increase competitiveness in the global market. A new paradigm is coming up in academic education system to cultivate the competent engineers. The major objective of this research is to suggest a positive learning pattern In order to overcome the limitations of the passive learning style.   • As the globalization of the global economy accelerates, entrepreneurs are increasingly interested in knowledge management processes such as sharing, utilizing, and learning within organizations to create and scale new knowledge to achieve sustainable growth and differentiated competitive advantage. Recently, domestic construction companies have been facing difficulties due to many unstable factors including domestic and foreign factors due to technological power enhancement and the decline of the construction industry due to the government's real estate regulation policy and the ongoing recession. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effect of knowledge sharing and utilization on the performance of knowledge sharing and utilization in the field organization of domestic construction companies in this market situation. In this study, the structural equation model was used for empirical analysis. As a result of this study, it was confirmed that all variables except for the relationship between organizational culture and knowledge sharing and utilization had a positive effect.

  • The concept of construction information systems (IS) is very comprehensive and subjective. Acronyms in relation to the construction IS may include BIM, CIC, IT, nD-CAD, ERP, CALS, KM and so on. These terminologies are used in a somewhat mixed way causing possible misunderstandings in research and practice of construction information systems. Moreover, ever-changing construction business environment has widely affected the roles and methods of utilizing construction IS. Examples of these changes are dissemination of alternative project delivery systems, global standardization under highly competitive overseas market, and advancement of information and communication technologies. In this context, the purpose of this paper is to propose a high-level framework for information systems in the construction industry. Several different concepts in the area of construction IS were investigated first in order to identify the major variables of the framework. Trends of research and real-world implementations were then analyzed to support the rationale of the variables. Finally, a framework was proposed by re-arranging the relevant issues. Findings of this paper indicate that different acronyms commonly share many similar concepts in their definitions, however, in each acronym, the motivations and approaches to implementing construction IS are very different. Different approach can provide maximum effectiveness, while overlaps may happen causing practical inefficiency.

Policy Evaluation and Improvement Plan of Overseas Construction Engineering Industry (해외 건설엔지니어링산업의 정책평가 및 개선방안)

  • Due to the downturn in the local construction business, entry into the overseas markets has been regarded as one of the core tasks of the building sector and the government. Thus, entry into overseas markets, not only by large and middle-standing enterprises, but also by small and medium sized enterprises, has recently become a major construction policy. Therefore, this study identified and evaluated overseas construction support policies in the field of construction engineering, ranked them as the policies for developing market development funds, fostering and educating expert workers, and supporting the provision of information on winning orders. Through these policy assessment results, the study proposed improvement measures from the government and from the business side. As for the government viewpoint, a measure of providing information suited to engineers in design companies, project manager (PM), construction manager (CM), a measure of producing skillful workers through the expansion of education support policies, and the promotion of specialized overseas workforce in the construction engineering sector were proposed. In the construction engineering industry, this study suggested measures for securing global expert manpower, sharing performance of overseas construction market development project, strengthening construction project management capacity, and strengthening risk management.
