As the validity issue of teacher nominations for the identification of gifted students has been raised recently, this study purports to test the validity of teacher nominations for selecting scientifically gifted students. As the criterion variables, domain specific traits such as science creative problem solving skills and science attitudes and domain general characteristics such as divergent thinking skills, creative attitudes, intrinsic motivation, and leadership were analyzed. Scientifically gifted students, potentially gifted students who had never been enrolled in gifted programs but were nominated as the scientifically gifted by teachers, and general class students participated in the study. The results of ANOVA showed that there were significant differences in all variables but originality factors of the TTCT and science creative problem solving skill test between gifted/nominated students and general class students; gifted/nominated students were significantly superior in these variables to general class students. The discriminant functions analysis yielded a discriminant function that significantly discriminated between gifted/nominated and general class students. Variables loaded on the discriminant function were science creative problem solving skills except for the originality subfactor, and science efficacy. These results imply that while teachers are likely to consider adaptation-oriented academic excellency related to logical thinking skills, problem solving skills, and science performance when nominating students, they may ignore the innovation-oriented property which is indicated as the fluency and originality factors of TTCT. Also, the criteria of teacher nominations are presumed to be congruent with the selection criteria of the gifted education program which pursued academic excellency as the educational goal. This suggests that with such criteria, high performing students in the science area can be sufficiently identified by teachers with no further identification procedures or/and tests.
The purpose of this study was to analyze science academic emotion and scientific imagination of students between a science gifted class and a general class in elementary school. Samples of this study were composed of 212 fifth and sixth graders in Gyeonggi province. The results of this study were as follows. First, positive scientific academic emotion of students in a science gifted class was higher than that of general class. Second, boredom and laziness of negative scientific academic emotion were higher scores in general students, whereas, angry area was higher scores of students in a science gifted class. Third, scientific imagination of students in a science gifted class was higher than that of general class. Fourth, both groups had a positive correlation between scientific imagination and positive science academic emotion. Especially, interest area of positive scientific academic emotion in both of the two groups influenced scientific imagination.
In this study, four gifted students in the second year of middle school at Gifted Education Center of the National University in Jeollanam-do were surveyed students' perceptions of the effectiveness of science class using science writing heuristic in terms of metacognition and the goals of the 2015 revised science curriculum. Through questionnaires and interviews with gifted science students, science gifted students recognized that the science class using science writing heuristic had a positive effect on the four subdomains (planning, monitoring, control, and evaluation) of metacognition. For this reason, the science gifted students presented self-directed experience in designing experiments, continually checking the collected experimental data, feedback process, and reflecting experience in preparing conclusions. Science gifted students recognized that science class using science writing heuristic had a positive effect on the goals of the 2015 revised science curriculum(attitudes, inquiry, knowledge, Science·Technology·Society(STS), and the enjoyment and usefulness of science learning) that correspond to through inquiry science writing lessons. For this reason, the science gifted students presented self-directed inquiry experiences, continual inquiry experiences on the same subject, thinking process at each stage of inquiry, learning experiences through inquiry, experience of the whole inquiry process, and inquiry of phenomena closely related to real life. Therefore, for the effective science class, it is necessary to apply the characteristics of science class using science writing heuristic which is responded by science gifted students to general science class as well as science gifted class later.
The purpose of this study was to identify the influence of emotional intelligence and achievement goal orientation on career maturity for elementary scientific gifted students. For this purpose, emotional intelligence test, achievement goal orientation measure and career maturity test were used. Sample of the study was consisted of 107 science gifted students and 98 general students in Y City, Gyeonggi Province. The results of this study were as follows. First, scientific gifted students showed higher score than general students, whereas general students had highest score in type of avoidance goal orientation of achievement goal orientation. Also, scientific gifted students showed highest score in mastery goal orientation of those. Second, the correlation between emotional intelligence and career maturity of scientific gifted students showed significantly positive score in almost all the subelements. As a result of conducting a regression analysis on the influence of emotional intelligence on career maturity of scientific gifted students, job planning and self-understanding of career maturity were impacted by emotional intelligence, whereas independence was low influence by emotional intelligence. Third, for the correlation between achievement goal orientation and career maturity of scientific gifted students, mastery goal orientation of achievement goal orientation had positive relationship in almost all the subelements, whereas mastery avoidance goal orientation and performance-avoidance goal orientation had negative correlation. Also, as a result of conducting a regression analysis on the influence of achievement goal orientation on career maturity of scientific gifted students, achievement goal orientation had influence on all the subelements of career maturity.

This study investigated the utilizations and needs of the gifted students, parents and experts as to the development of the Information Center for Gifted Education in Science (IC-GES). The participants of this study were 343 gifted students, 194 parents raising gifted students in science, and 113 experts in gifted science education. The survey instrument was developed to examine their perspectives and needs. The results of this study revealed that the gifted students, their parents, and experts showed the diverse utilizations and needs. The gifted students showed the more interest in information on the recruitment of gifted students. On the other hand, parents and experts were interested in gifted education programs and curriculum. They exploited various resources to find out the information on science gifted education. In addition, with respect to the development of the IC-GES, all of the participants of this study indicated that they needed the resource center providing the information regarding gifted science education programs. They also noted that the IC-GES could be a crucial foundation as well as essential reinforcement for gifted science education. This study provides and supports the rationale and needs of the development of IC-GES.
This study aims to analyse science-gifted elementary students' perception of speech in general school class, school science class, and science-gifted class and the relationship between their voluntary speech and scientific creativity. For this, 39 fifth-graders in the Science-Gifted Education Center at Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education in Korea were asked about their frequency of voluntary speech on each class situation, the reasons for such behavior, and their general opinions about speech. Also, researchers collected the teachers' observation on students' speech in class. To get the scores for students' scientific creativity, four different subjects of tasks were presented. The students' scientific creativity scores were used for correlation analysis with their frequency of speech. The main findings from this study are as follows: First, science-gifted elementary students tended to be passive in science-gifted class compared to general school and school science class. Second, the main reason for the low frequency of students' speech in school classes is that they do not have many opportunities to make presentations. Third, a survey of students' general thoughts on speech showed that more students wanted to make a speech voluntarily in class than the opposite. Fourth, the four different scientific creativity tasks had little correlation. Fifth, the correlations between the frequency of voluntary speech and the scores of scientific creativity were mostly low, with significant results only for plant task. Sixth, the correlations between the frequency of voluntary speech and the two components that make up scientific creativity, originality and usefulness, were also mostly low, but significant results for both were found in plant task, with originality having a higher correlation than usefulness. Based on this results, this study discussed the meanings and implications of students' voluntary speech on elementary science education and creativity education.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the difficulties of teachers who teach gifted students in invention and to help address their concerns. To this end, the researcher interviews four teachers with more than three years of experience in guiding gifted students in invention. As a result, they have the difficulties such as difficulties in themselves, relationship with parents, in teaching students, relationship with school and relationship with education office. Supporting measures are 1) strengthening incentives for inventive gifted teachers, 2) continuing in service education, 3) improving the student selection process for gifted students in invention, 4) improving parents' perception of gifted students in invention, 5) improving awareness of school administrators, 6) consistent and continuous administration.
In order to investigate the differentiation for gifted students, we studied the present condition of differentiation applied in science classes at regular schools, private educational institutes, and gifted education centers. A questionnaire regarding differential instruction was administered to 90 eighth graders enrolled in university- based gifted centers in Seoul. The results of chi-square testing based on the questions and educational institutions showed that students used only a textbook at regular schools and several workbooks at private educational institutes, while students could use various specialty publications at gifted education centers. Students frequently took post-test at regular schools and private education institutes. Further, at regular schools and private education institutes, students who completed curricular activities early spent their time performing unrelated tasks or reviewing the lessons or solving problems. Gifted students tend to develop their interests by themselves through science classes at regular schools. However, efforts to group students according to their interests were predominant at the gifted education centers. The response rate for students' choice of curricular activities and teachers' preparation for advanced learners were the lowest in all questions.

The research aimed to investigate characteristics of middle school students enrolled in a science gifted education center affiliated with university in terms of multiple intelligence, self-regulated learning and personality traits. The 89 subjects in the study responded to questionnaires of multiple intelligence, self-regulated learning ability and a personality trait in October, 2011. It was found that both science and math gifted students presented intrapersonal intelligence as strength and logical-mathematical intelligence as weakness. While physics and earth science gifted ones showed spatial intelligence as strength, chemistry and biology gifted ones did intrapersonal intelligence. For self-regulated learning ability, both science and mathematics gifted students tend to show higher levels than general students, in particular, cognitive and motivation strategies comparatively higher than meta-cognition and environment condition strategies. Characteristics of personal traits widely distributed across science and mathematics gifted students, showing that each gifted student presented distinct characteristics individually. Those gifted students showing certain intelligence such as spatial, intrapersonal, or natural intelligences as strength also showed different characteristics of self-regulated learning ability and personal traits among students showing same intelligence as strength. It was concluded that science and mathematics gifted students showed various characteristics of multiple intelligences, self-regulated learning ability, and personal traits across science and mathematics areas.
Since 1998, an elementary teacher education institute in Korea has hosted the center for the gifted education. The institute hired undergraduate students to escort and liaison each class of the gifted student participants with assisting classroom activities. These liaison teachers observed the gifted classroom activities and evaluated them by using a given checklist and filling out pre-made evaluation forms. Currently this system is being transferred from part-time jobs for students to earn allowance into well organized pre-service teacher program focusing on the gifted education. In other words, the purpose of system is being shifted from how liaison teachers facilitate the gifted program to how the system helps the liaison teachers to be quality teachers for the gifted who can understand what the gifted are and how to facilitate them. Analyzed were the self reports of the liaison teachers regarding their perceptions and beliefs of the gifted and their education program. It was found participant liaison teachers purposed to have more live experiences with getting along with students as well. Liaison teachers’ perceptions on establishing a gifted teacher professional education sequence were reported in this study. The potential scaffolding of the pre-service teacher education program model of the gifted education was provided as a consequence of this study.
