  • Purpose: This study investigated an outbreak of mumps affecting students in a high school (S high school) in Seoul, with an evaluation of the diagnostic utility of the mumps polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay. Methods: S high school students that presented to health care providers with mumps symptoms between April 2013 and July 2013 were surveyed for the monthly distribution of symptom onset and their grade level. Mumps PCR assays were performed using buccal swabs from some of these students. Results: During the survey period, 77 students presented with suspected cases of mumps. The monthly distribution of symptom onset was as follows: one in April, 17 in May, 54 in June, and five in July. With regard to grade level, 26 students were in their first year, 28 were in their second year, and 23 were in their third year. Of the 18 students tested with PCR assays, five had positive results. Samples were collected within 3 days of symptom onset in 15 of the 18 students, and positive PCR results were obtained in five of these 15 students. The PCR results of the remaining three students from whom samples were collected more than 3 days after the onset of symptoms were negative (P=0.24). Conclusions: We evaluated the epidemiological aspects of an outbreak of mumps in a high school. Mumps PCR might be epidemiologically useful if performed within 3 days of the onset of symptoms in suspected cases.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate snacking behavior of high school students. The subjects were 1,587 students (684 male, 903 female) in Seoul and Paju. The highest number of eating snacks was 'once(39.9%)' per day, and they preferred 'milk and cookies' and 'fruit.' For the result of reasons for choosing a snack, they chose 'what I want to have (59.6%)' most and 'snacks don't affect eating meals (48.0%).' Also, compared with the ones with 'an elementary school diploma,' the percentage of those with 'a middle school diploma' was higher in 'having snacks once or three times' according to father's education level(p<0.05). In snack types and general characteristics, they chose 'milk and cookies' when their expenses range 'under 50000 won' and '100,000 won' and 'fruit' when '70,000won' and 'over 100,000 won (p<0.05).' In the reasons for choosing a snack, younger mothers(30-50ages) said 'what I want to have' while elder mothers($$\geq_-51ages$$) 'depending on my mood.' Also, the respondents whose mothers had 'a high school diploma' answered 'what I want to have' the most (p<0.05). Especially, in case of effects after eating snack, they answered 'poor meals (35.5%)' whose mother's job was professional. These results suggest that the general characteristics of family environment may affect snacking behavior among high school students. They need a guideline to help select healthy snacks for desirable eating behavior.

  • The purpose of this study is to offer fundamental data which is necessary to improve a design for the general high school. For doing this, teachers' satisfaction about using spaces of high schools equipped with excellent facilities and with general facilities respectively was compared and analyzed. Selected schools for this study were 3 high schools with superior facilities and 3 high schools with general facilities, all of which have been built or renovated since 2010. Data were collected by doing a field survey, a literature survey, and a questionnaire survey. Data were analyzed by 4 ways: Reliability analysis about satisfaction of educational facilities, demographic analysis, regression analysis on overall satisfaction and the use of facilities, and t-test to verify the difference of satisfaction depending on schools. Findings showed that overall satisfaction was high in high schools with excellent facilities whereas it was low in high schools with general facilities. Also, in order to enhance overall satisfaction of facilities, it suggests that building and continuously maintaining a circular route and a walkway which do not have the concealed space should be necessary.

  • This study investigated the association between breakfast frequency (0~2 times, 3~6 times, and 7 times per week) and awareness of general school life (physical activity, relationships with teachers and friends, rule compliance, study attitudes, study records, and overall school life) in high school students (boys 146 and girls 155) in the Yongin region. Awareness of physical activity was higher in girls (77.4%) than in boys (65.1%). Rule compliance showed a significant difference in girls (P<0.01), whereas boys did not show any difference. Percentage of 'effective' awareness of study attitudes was 24.0% and 44.5% in boys and girls, respectively. Awareness of study records in girls showed significant difference (0~2 times 37.5%, 3~6 times 30.4%, and 7 times 52.2%) (P<0.05), whereas boys did not show any difference. Awareness of overall school life showed a significant difference in both boys (P<0.05) and girls (P<0.01). Association between breakfast frequency and general school life in boys was as follows: awareness of overall school life had the highest positive value (+0.185) (P<0.05) and relationships with teachers had the second (+0.168) (P<0.05). Girls also showed the highest positive value (+0.323) (P<0.01) for awareness of overall school life, which occurred in the following order: rule compliance (+0.316) (P<0.01)> awareness of study attitudes (+0.267) (P<0.01)> relationships with friends (+0.215) (P<0.01). In conclusion, high school students showed a high positive association between breakfast frequency and general school life, particularly in girls. Therefore, effective nutrition education programs in connection with national policy and school support are highly required to provide healthy breakfast and school life to high school students.
