Nanoporous non-woven carbon fibers for a gas sensor were prepared from a pitch/polyacrylonitrile (PAN) mixed solution through an electrospinning process and their gas-sensing properties were investigated. In order to create nanoscale pores, magnesium oxide (MgO) powders were added as a pore-forming agent during the mixing of these carbon precursors. The prepared nanoporous carbon fibers derived from the MgO pore-forming agent were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), $N_2$-adsorption isotherms, and a gas-sensing analysis. The SEM images showed that the MgO powders affected the viscosity of the pitch/PAN solution, which led to the production of beaded fibers. The specific surface area of carbon fibers increased from 2.0 to $763.2m^2/g$ when using this method. The template method therefore improved the porous structure, which allows for more efficient gas adsorption. The sensing ability and the response time for the NO gas adsorption were improved by the increased surface area and micropore fraction. In conclusion, the carbon fibers with high micropore fractions created through the use of MgO as a pore-forming agent exhibited improved NO gas sensitivity.
Gas sensing element, $\gamma-Fe_2O_3$was synthesized by dehydration, reduction, and oxidation of $$${\gamma}$-FeOOH, which was synthesized with $FeSO_4\;{\cdot}\;7H_2O$ and NaOH. They were produced as a bulk-type, a thick film-type. Then, their responses and mechanisms of response to the gas of liquefied-petroleum were studied. The qualities of gas sensing elements are decided by the structure and the relative surface area. In the process of $\alpha-FeOOH $synthesis, the effects of reaction conditions as the equivalent ratio, on the structure and the relative surface area of gas sensing element were observed. The changes of the structure were measured with XRD, SEM, TG-DTA and BET. The resistance changes of the synthesized gas sensor in the air were measured. The response ratio were also measured for the changes of working temperature and gas concentration. As a result of analysis with XRD, it was confirmed that the the best conditions for the synthesis of $\alpha -FeOOH$ were equivalent ratio 0.65. The thick film-type element of $\gamma-Fe_2O_3$responded more quickly than the bulk-type did. The structure and the relative surface area of the $\alpha-FeOOH $were confirmed as the important factors deciding gas response charcteristics.

As a green and abundant source of energy, H2 has attracted the attention of researchers for use in different applications. Nevertheless, it is highly flammable, and because of its significantly small size, extreme attention is needed to detect its leakage. In this review, we discuss different effects of noble metals on the H2 gas response and performance of metal oxide-based gas sensors. In this regard, we discuss the effects of noble metals, in combination with metal oxides, on H2 gas detection. The catalytic activity towards H2 gas and the formation of heterojunctions with metal oxides are the main contributions of noble metals to the sensing improvement of H2 gas sensors. Furthermore, in the special case of Pd and somewhat Pt, the formation of PdHx and PtHx also affects the H2 sensing performance. This review paper provides useful information for researchers working in the field of H2 gas detection.

LTCC (Low Temperature Cofired Ceramic) technology is one of technologies which can realize SIP (System-In-a-Package). In this paper realization of gas sensor using LTCC technology was described. In the conventional gas sensor structure, wire bonding method is generally used as an interconnection method whereas in the LTCC sensor structure, via was used for the interconnection. As sensing materials, $SnO_2$ was adopted. The effect of frit glass portion on the adhesion of the sensing material to the LTCC substrate and the electrical conductivity of the sensing material were analyzed. AgPd, PdO, Pt was added to the sensing material as an additive for improving the gas sensitivity and electrical conductivity and the effect of the amount of additives in the sensing material on the electrical conductivity was investigated. The effect of the amount of frit glass in the termination on the sensor performance, especially mechanical integrity, was considered and the crack initiation and propagation in the boundary between the sensing material and the termination was studied.
A novel sensor material of Au nanoparticles (NPs) functionalized 1D ${\alpha}-MoO_3$ nanobelts (NBs) was fabricated by a facile lysine-assisted approach. The obtained $Au/{\alpha}-MoO_3$ product was characterized by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM) and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX), and X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS). Then, in order to investigate the gas sensing performances of our samples, a comparative gas sensing study was carried out on both the ${\alpha}-MoO_3$ NBs before and after Au NPs decoration by using ethanol vapor as the molecular probe. The results turned out that, after the functionalization of Au NPs, the sensor exhibited improved gas-sensing characteristics than the pure ${\alpha}-MoO_3$, such as response and recovery time, optimal operating temperature (OT) and excellent selectivity. Take for example 200 ppm of ethanol, the response/recovery times were 34 s/43 s and 5.7 s/10.5 s, respectively, while the optimal operating temperature (OT) was lower to $200^{\circ}C$ rather than $250^{\circ}C$. Besides, the functionalized sensor showed a higher response to ethanol at $200^{\circ}C$, and response was 1.6 times higher than the pure $MoO_3$. The mechanism of such improved sensing properties was interpreted, which might be attributed to the spillover effect of Au NPs and the electronic metal-support interaction.
Gas sensors based on semiconducting metal oxides have attracted considerable attention for various applications owing to their facile, cheap, and small-scale manufacturing processes. Hematite (α-Fe2O3) is widely considered as a promising candidate for a gas-sensing material owing to not only its abundance in the earth's crust and low price but also its chemical stability and suitable bandgap energy. However, only a few studies have been performed in this direction because of the low gas response and sluggish response of hematite-based gas sensors. Nanostructures present a representative solution to both overcome these disadvantages and exploit the desirable features to produce high-performance gas sensors. However, several challenges remain for adopting gas sensors based on metal oxide nanostructures, such as improving cost efficiency and facilitating mass production. This review summarizes the recent studies on gas sensors based on hematite nanostructures. It also provides useful insights into various strategies for enhancing the gas-sensing properties of gas sensors based on hematite nanostructures.

$TiO_2$ is a promising material for gas sensors. To achieve high sensitivities, the material should exhibit a large surface-to-volume ratio and possess the high accessibility of the gas molecules to the surface. Accordingly, a wide variety of porous $TiO_2$ nanomaterials synthesized by wet-chemical methods have been reported for gas sensor applications. Nonetheless, achieving the large-area uniformity and comparability with well-established semiconductor production processes of the methods is still challenging. An alternative method is soft-templating which utilizes nanostructured inorganic or organic materials as sacrificial templates for the preparation of porous materials. Fabrication of macroporous $TiO_2$ films and hollow $TiO_2$ tubes by soft-templating and their gas sensing applications have been reported recently. In these porous materials composed of assemblies of individual micro/nanostructures, the form of links or necks between individual micro/nanostructures is a critical factor to determine gas sensing properties of the material. However, a systematic study to clarify the role of links between individual micro/nanostructures in gas sensing properties of a porous metal oxide matrix is thoroughly lacking. In this work, we have demonstrated a fabrication method to prepare highly-ordered, embossed $TiO_2$ films composed of anatase $TiO_2$ hollow hemispheres via soft-templating using polystyrene beads. The form of links between hollow hemispheres could be controlled by $O_2$ plasma etching on the bead templates. This approach reveals the strong correlation of gas sensitivity with the form of the links. Our experimental results highlight that not only the surface-to-volume ratio of an ensemble material composed of individual micro/nanostructures but also the links between individual micro/nanostructures play a critical role in evaluating the sensing properties of the material. In addition to this general finding, the facileness, large-scale productivity, and compatability with semiconductor production process of the proposed fabrication method promise applications of the embossed $TiO_2$ films to high-quality sensors.
We investigated the carbon monoxide (CO) gas-sensing properties of nanostructured Al-doped zinc oxide thin films deposited on self-assembled Au nanodots (ZnO/Au thin films). The Al-doped ZnO thin film was deposited onto the structure by rf sputtering, resulting in a gas-sensing element comprising a ZnO-based active layer with an embedded Pt/Ti electrode covered by the self-assembled Au nanodots. Prior to the growth of the active ZnO layer, the Au nanodots were formed via annealing a thin Au layer with a thickness of 2 nm at a moderate temperature of $500^{\circ}C$. It was found that the ZnO/Au nanostructured thin film gas sensors showed a high maximum sensitivity to CO gas at $250^{\circ}C$ and a low CO detection limit of 5 ppm in dry air. Furthermore, the ZnO/Au thin film CO gas sensors exhibited fast response and recovery behaviors. The observed excellent CO gas-sensing properties of the nanostructured ZnO/Au thin films can be ascribed to the Au nanodots, acting as both a nucleation layer for the formation of the ZnO nanostructure and a catalyst in the CO surface reaction. These results suggest that the ZnO thin films deposited on self-assembled Au nanodots are promising for practical high-performance CO gas sensors.
We report the effect of the fabric of the surface microstructure on the CO gas sensing properties of $SnO_2$ thin films deposited on self-assembled Au nanodots ($SnO_2$/Au) that were formed on $SiO_2/Si$ substrates. We characterized structural and morphological properties, comparing them to those of $SnO_2$ thin films deposited directly onto $SiO_2/Si$ substrates. We observed a significant enhancement of CO gas sensing properties in the $SnO_2$/Au gas sensors, specifically exhibiting a high maximum response at $200^{\circ}C$ and quite a low detection limit of 1 ppm level in dry air. In particular, the response of the $SnO_2/Au$ gas sensor was found to reach the maximum value of 32.5 at $200^{\circ}C$, which is roughly 27 times higher than the response (~1.2) of the $SnO_2$ gas sensor obtained at the same operating temperature of $200^{\circ}C$. Furthermore, the $SnO_2/Au$ gas sensors displayed very fast response and recovery behaviors. The observed enhancement in the CO gas sensing properties of the $SnO_2/Au$ sensors is mainly ascribed to the formation of a nanostructured morphology in the active $SnO_2$ layer having a high specific surface-reaction area by the insertion of a nanodot form of Au nucleation layer.
Low power consuming and highly responsive semiconductor-type microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) gas sensors are fabricated for real-time environmental monitoring applications. This subsystem is developed using a gas sensor module, a Bluetooth module, and a personal digital assistant (PDA) phone. The gas sensor module consists of a $NO_2$ or CO gas sensor and signal processing chips. The MEMS gas sensor is composed of a microheater, a sensing electrode, and sensing material. Metal oxide nanopowder is drop-coated onto a substrate using a microheater and integrated into the gas sensor module. The change in resistance of the metal oxide nanopowder from exposure to oxidizing or deoxidizing gases is utilized as the principle mechanism of this gas sensor operation. The variation detected in the gas sensor module is transferred to the PDA phone by way of the Bluetooth module.
