Glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH, EC 1.1.1.49) in Deinococcus radiophilus, an extraordinarily UV-resistant bacterium, was investigated to gain insight into its resistance as it was shown to be involved in a scavenging system of superoxide $(O_2^{-1})$ and peroxide $(O_2^{-2})$ generated by UV and oxidative stresses. D. radiophilus possesses two G6PDH isoforms: G6PDH-1 and G6PDH-2, both showing dual coenzyme specificity for NAD and NADP. Both enzymes were detected throughout the growth phase; however, the substantial increase in G6PDH-1 observed at stationary phase or as the results of external oxidative stress indicates that this enzyme is inducible under stressful environmental conditions. The G6PDH-1 and G6PDH-2 were purified 122- and 44-fold (using NADP as cofactor), respectively. The purified G6PDH-1 and G6PDH-2 had the specific activity of 2,890 and 1,033 U/mg protein (using NADP as cofactor) and 3,078 and 1,076 U/mg protein (using NAD as cofactor), respectively. The isoforms also evidenced distinct structures; G6PDH-1 was a tetramer of 35 kDa subunits, whereas G6PDH-2 was a dimer of 60kDa subunits. The pIs of G6PDH-1 and G6PDH-2 were 6.4 and 5.7, respectively. Both G6PDH-1 and G6PDH-2 were inhibited by both ATP and oleic acid, but G6PDH-1 was found to be more susceptible to oleic acid than G6PDH-2. The profound inhibition of both enzymes by ${\beta}-naphthoquinone-4-sulfonic$ acid suggests the involvement of lysine at their active sites. $Cu^{2+}$ was a potent inhibitor to G6PDH-2, but a lesser degree to G6PDH-1. Both G6PDH-1 and G6PDH-2 showed an optimum activity at pH 8.0 and $30^{\circ}C$.
The cereal grain crops have strong flexibility against adverse environment and they have various functional compounds. The objective of the present study was to screen phenolic compounds in sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench], foxtail millet (Setaria italica), common millet (Panicum miliaceum L.) by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with photodiode array (PDA) detector. Sorghum contained the highest amount of phenolic compounds among three different crops (sorghum, foxtail millet, common millet). Especially Moktaksusu showed the highest amount of phenolic compounds concentrations and biggest regional differences. The comparison of average phenolic compounds in sorghums by regions showed order to Milyang ($963.3\;{\mu}g{\cdot}g^{-1}$), Yeongyang ($923.1\;{\mu}g{\cdot}g^{-1}$), Gijang ($831.3\;{\mu}g{\cdot}g^{-1}$) and Bonghwa ($735.6\;{\mu}g{\cdot}g^{-1}$). Among the sorghum cultivars, Moktaksusu ($1407.9\;{\mu}g{\cdot}g^{-1}$) had the highest concentration of phenolic compounds. The average phenolic compounds of foxtail millets showed similar amount among Milyang ($319.0\;{\mu}g{\cdot}g^{-1}$), Gijang ($288.1\;{\mu}g{\cdot}g^{-1}$) and Bonghwa ($281.9\;{\mu}g{\cdot}g^{-1}$) areas. The phenolic compounds of Yeongyang ($246.6\;{\mu}g{\cdot}g^{-1}$) slightly low and that showed similar concentrations among three different regions. The concentration of phenolic compounds in foxtail millets, Chungchajo ($335.6\;{\mu}g{\cdot}g^{-1}$) showed the highest concentrations. The average phenolic compounds of common millets showed the highest concentrations in Milyang ($305.5\;{\mu}g{\cdot}g^{-1}$), Bonghwa ($262.0\;{\mu}g{\cdot}g^{-1}$), Gijang ($195.1\;{\mu}g{\cdot}g^{-1}$), Yeongyang ($237.2\;{\mu}g{\cdot}g^{-1}$) in decreasing order. The concentration of phenolic compounds of common millets was the highest in the Norangchalgijang ($337.0\;{\mu}g{\cdot}g^{-1}$), Hwanggumgijang ($250.0\;{\mu}g{\cdot}g^{-1}$) was also relatively higher than others. The results of this study will provide basic information for breeding sorghums, foxtail millets and common millets with higher phenolic compound concentrations.
Different versions of the boundary Schwarz lemma for the 𝒩 (𝜌) class are discussed in this study. Also, for the function g(z) = z+b2z2+b3z3+... defined in the unit disc D such that g ∈ 𝒩 (𝜌), we estimate a modulus of the angular derivative of g(z) function at the boundary point 1 ∈ 𝜕D with g'(1) = 1 + 𝜎 (1 - 𝜌), where ${\rho}={\frac{1}{n}}{\sum\limits_{i=1}^{n}}g(c_i)={\frac{g^{\prime}(c_1)+g^{\prime}(c_2)+{\ldots}+g^{\prime}(c_n)}{n}}{\in}g^{\prime}(D)$ and 𝜌≠1, 𝜎 > 1 and c1, c2, ..., cn ∈ 𝜕D. That is, we shall give an estimate below |g"(1)| according to the first nonzero Taylor coefficient of about two zeros, namely z = 0 and z ≠ 0. Estimating is made by using the arithmetic average of n different derivatives g'(c1), g'(c2), ..., g'(cn).
The population of river otter (Lutra lutra) has been declined most of the world due to hunting, habitat destruction and indirect or direct influences of eutrophication, acidification and toxic chemicals. This study is conducted to identify the population decline of river otter in Korea with relation to environmental pollution caused by accumulation of heavy and flared metals. The field survey was conducted during Jan~Dec, 2004 at a monthly basis by collecting spraints. A total of 228 spraints were collected and analysis was done by ICP-AES. The concentrations of fourteen metals (Cr, Zn, Cd, Pb, Ni, Fe, Co, Mn, Mg, Cu, Al, Ba Hg, As) have been determined. Annual concentrations of Cd $(1.38{\mu}g\;g^{-1}),\;Zn\;(599.06\;{\mu}g\;g^{-1}),\;Pb\;(5.54\;{\mu}g\;g^{-1})$ at Gucheon were higher than those of Yeonchocheon. Concentrations of $Cr\;(5.01{\mu}g\;g^{-1}),\;Ni\;(1.91{\mu}g\;g^{-1}),\;Co\;(0.25{\mu}g\;g^{-1})$ were higher at Yeonchocheon. Most metals in winter were significantly increased (P<0.05) as season progressed from spring to winter. $Pb\;(15.58{\mu}g\;g^{-1}),\;Cu\;(15.15{\mu}g\;g^{-1}),\;a;Guchoen\;and\;Cr\;(5.77{\mu}g\;g^{-1})$ at Yeonchocheon were high in the downstream of winter.

Populus Tomentiglandulosa (PT) is known for pharmacological effects against ischemia-injury and immune activity. This study aimed to investigate the nutritional components, total phenol and flavonoid contents, antioxidant activities of PT extract. Among the mineral contents, the K content (907.5 mg/100 g) was the highest in the PT extract. Vitamins C (6.1 mg/100 g) and nicotinic acid (3.1 mg/100 g) were also found in high amounts. Fructose (2.2%) and glucose (1.6%) were found as free sugars in the PT extract. The total phenolic and flavonoid contents of PT extract were 115.4±0.85 mg GAE/g and 20.9±1.14 mg QE/g, respectively. Results of HPLC analysis of PT extract identified catechin (9.1±0.27 mg/g), caffeic acid (4.1±0.57 mg/g), p-coumaric acid (2.1±0.49 mg/g), chlorogenic acid (1.6±1.86 mg/g), and gallic acid (1.4±0.35 mg/g), respectively. These results suggest that the PT extract possesses high nutritional component and antioxidant properties, which can be used as functional bioresources.
This study was carried out to investigate the effects of stocking density on the eating and ruminating behavior of growing Hanwoo steer (Bos taurus coreanae). A total of thirty growing Hanwoo steers were divided into four stocking density groups (G1: 1 head/32 $m^2$, G2: 2 heads/32 $m^2$, G3: 3 heads /32 $m^2$, G4: 4 heads/32 $m^2$) with 3 replicates (12 pens). The results of eating behaviors for 48 hours are summarized as follows: Total intake was higher in 2G, 3G and 4G than in 1G, but not significantly different among thetreatments. Intake of roughage was the highest in 2G (3.32 kg), while 1G (2.85 kg) was the lowest (P<0.05). Eating time of concentrate was highly in the order of 1G > 2G > 3G > 4G (P<0.05). But eating time (concentrate + roughage) and ruminating time were not significantly difference among the treatments. Resting time (standing + lying) was the highest in 4G (P<0.01), and lying time was the highest in 2G. Chewing time (Eating + ruminating) was higher in 3G than in 1G, 2G, and 4G (P<0.05). Number of bolus, number of total chews, ruminating time per bolus and number of bolus per minute were not significantly difference among the treatments. But number of chews per bolus was significantly lower in 1G than those of the other treatments (p<(0.05). Number of urinating was in the order of 1G > 4G > 2G > 3G (P<0.05). However, stocking density had no effect on drinking and defecating. Eating rate and chewing efficiency were the highest in 4G (P<0.01, 0.05), but ruminating efficiency was not significantly difference among the treatments.
Water is the most important resource for the potato cultivation, especially to get the maximum water use efficiency and yield of potato, Water has to be applied moderately based on the water requirement of the potato. Crop water requirement (WR) is a function of the Potential evapo-transpiration(PET) and Crop coefficient (Kc). PET can be estimated by the climate data measured at the weather station in the production region. Kc was measured by the NIAST (RDA) through Lysimeter experiments. In this study, the growth stage of potato was divided as four (G-1 : Apr. 1~Apr. 15, G-2 : Apr. 16~May. 10, G-3 : May. 11~May. 31, G4 : Jun. 1~Jun. 15). The average PET during potato growing season of the 45 areas was $2.95mm\;day^{-1}$. The most water requirement was the G-3 stage among the potato growth stage. The MWR (Mean water requirement) according to growth stage was 1.0~1.2 (average 1.1), 1.5~1.8 (average 1.6), 1.9~2.2 (average 2.0) and 1.7~2.1 (average 1.8) mm $day^{-1}$, in the G-1, G-2, G-3 and G-4 stage, respectively. The TWR (Total water requirement) according to growth stage was 18.0~22.1 (average 19.3), 50.6~66.6 (average 56.3), 63.5~88.2 (average 72.4) and 38.3~54.5 (average 44) mm, in the G-1, G-2, G-3 and G-4 stage, respectively.
This study investigated the differences in barley growth at different growth stages (Dec, Feb, and Apr) and the yield at harvest in three groups (G1, G2, and G3) with different climates. Additionally, we measured meteorological differences between areas during the growing season to determine which factors were related to growth and yield differences. We evaluated the chemical composition of soil and the mineral content in leaves during the heading stages. We also recorded the main constituents, amino acids, and mineral compositions of barley seeds grown in different areas. Tiller number/m2 in G1 areas was higher than in G2 and G3 when measured before and after overwintering. However, tiller number/m2 and dry aboveground plant parts/m2 in G2 and G3 areas were higher than in G1. Regrowth, panicle formation, and heading days in G2 areas occurred slightly later than in G1 and G3. However, there was no difference in chlorophyll content (SPAD value) between groups. The yield in G1 areas was 9~15% less than in G1 and G3. The decrease in yield in G2 areas could be due to lower panicle number, spikelet number, and ripening rate. In addition, the decrease in yield in G2 areas is likely because maximum, minimum, and average daily temperatures during the growing season were lower than those in G1 and G3. However, mineral nutrients in the soil were higher in the G2 area than in G1 and G3. The overall mineral content in plants tended to be higher in G1 areas than in G2 and G3. Mineral content such as Cu, K, Mg, and P in G3 areas and crude protein and most amino acids in G2 areas tended to be relatively low compared to other areas. Thus, the G1 area may be suitable for barley cultivation without adverse impacts on barley yield, main constituents, amino acids, and mineral contents compared to the main producing areas in G3.
This study was conducted to screen herbicidal activity of Korean native plants which could be used for the development of new natural herbicides. Fifty-five plants were collected from Wan and Jeju islands in Korea and their methanol extracts were obtained. Herbicidal activity of methanol extracts were determined by seed bioassay using rape (Brassica napus L.) seedlings. Among fifty-five species, five plants were highly herbicidal ($GR_{50}$ < 1,000 ${\mu}g\;g^{-1}$): Clematis apiifolia A. P. DC.; (811 ${\mu}g\;g^{-1}$), Euscaphis japonica (THUNB.) KANITZ (867 ${\mu}g\;g^{-1}$), Hibiscus mutabilis L. (988 ${\mu}g\;g^{-1}$), Phyllostachys pubescens MAZEL (778 ${\mu}g\;g^{-1}$), Yucca recurvifolia (857 ${\mu}g\;g^{-1}$). Twenty-seven plants were shown moderately herbicidal (1,000 < $GR_{50}$ < 2,000 ${\mu}g\;g^{-1}$), however, twenty-three plants were not shown any herbicidal activity.
For an ordered set W = {w1, w2, . . . , wk} of vertices and a vertex v in a connected graph G, the k-vector r(v|W) = (d(v, w1), d(v, w2), . . . , d(v, wk)) is called the metric representation of v with respect to W, where d(x, y) is the distance between the vertices x and y. A set W is called a resolving set for G if distinct vertices of G have distinct metric representations with respect to W. The minimum cardinality of a resolving set for G is its metric dimension dim(G), and a resolving set of minimum cardinality is a basis of G. The corona product, G ⊙ H of graphs G and H is obtained by taking one copy of G and n(G) copies of H, and by joining each vertex of the ith copy of H to the ith vertex of G. In this paper, we obtain bounds for dim(G ⊙ K1), characterize all graphs G with dim(G ⊙ K1) = dim(G), and prove that dim(G ⊙ K1) = n - 1 if and only if G is the complete graph Kn or the star graph K1,n-1.
