Influence of Emotional Awareness, Emotional Expressiveness, and Ambivalence over Emotional Expressiveness on College Student Adjustment in Freshman Nursing Students (간호대학신입생의 정서인식, 정서표현, 정서표현양면성이 대학생활적응에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was done to investigate emotional awareness, emotional expressiveness, ambivalence over emotional expressiveness, and college student adjustment, to analyze the factor affecting college student adjustment. The subjects were 159 freshman nursing students. Data were collected through structured questionnaires from May 20 to June 10, 2012. Data analysis was done using descriptive statistics, independent t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient, and multiple regression with SPSS WIN v 18.0. Positive correlation were found between college student adjustment and mood monitoring as well as mood labeling. On the other hand, ambivalence over positive emotional expressiveness and ambivalence over negative emotional expressiveness were significantly negative correlation with college student adjustment. In addition, mood monitoring, ambivalence over positive emotional expressiveness, mood labeling, and ambivalence over negative emotional expressiveness accounted for 31.8% of variance in college student adjustment. The results of this study suggest that programs for promoting emotional awareness and reducing ambivalence over emotional expressiveness are important for college adjustment in freshman nursing students.

Influence of Academic Self-Efficacy and Department Satisfaction on College Life Adaptation of Nursing Freshman (간호대학 신입생의 학업적 자기효능감과 전공 만족도가 대학생활 적응에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was conducted to describe the relationship and influencing factors among college life adaptation, academic self-efficacy, and department satisfaction of freshman nursing students. There were 345 345 nursing freshman between November 30 and December 4 who participated in this study. The mean score of the college life adaptation, academic self-efficacy, and department satisfaction was $2.91({\pm}0.52)$, $2.79({\pm}0.60)$, and $3.55({\pm}0.47)$. The college life adaptation related with male group (p=.004), entering motivation (p=.027), friendship satisfaction (p<.001), first semester grade (p=.005), and academic self-efficacy related with male group (p=.040), entering motivation (p=.047), desired work (p=.015), friendship satisfaction (p=.014), first semester grade(p<.001), and department satisfaction related with entering motivation (p=.004), friendship satisfaction (p<.001), and first semester grade (p=.002) all showed statistical significance. There was a significant positive correlation among college life adaptation, academic self-efficacy (r=.223, p<.001), and department satisfaction (r=.342, p<.001). A significant and positive correlation was found between academic self-efficacy and department satisfaction (r=.218, p<.001). Department satisfaction was largely influenced by the college life adaptation. The regression model explained 23.1% of college life adaptation. In conclusion, this study showed that college life adaptation of freshman nursing students was correlated with academic self-efficacy and department satisfaction. Moreover, to increase the college adaptation of nursing freshman, it is necessary to develop educational programs to improve academic self-efficacy and department satisfaction.

The Influence of Growth Mindset and Professor Support on School Life Adjustment of Nursing College Freshman in the Era of COVID-19 (코로나19 시대 간호대학 신입생의 성장마인드셋과 교수지지가 학교생활적응에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study is to confirm the relationship between growth mindset, professor support and school life adjustment of nursing college freshman in the era of COVID-19, and to understand the effect on school life adjustment. The subjects of this study were 248 nursing college freshman located in G Metropolitan City, and data collection was conducted from October 4 to October 31, 2022. The collected data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficients and multiple regression analysis using the SPSS/WIN 28.0 program. As a result of the study, school life adjustment had a significant positive correlation with growth mindset(r=.51, p<.000) and professor support(r=.54, p<.000). Factors affectiong school life adjustment of nursing college freshman were professor support(β=.38, p<.001), subjects who answered very satisfied in major satisfaction(β=.31, p<.001), growth mindset(β=.26, p<.001), subjects who answered satisfied in major satisfaction(β=.16, p=.015), and female students(β=.14, p=.005), which explained 44.0% of variance. The results of this study will be usefully used to develop strategies to improve the school life adjustment of nursing college freshman. In the future, a follow-up study that can expand the subjects and explain the school life adjustment of nursing college freshman is suggested.

Stress, Stress Coping Methods, and College Adjustment according to Behavioral Styles in Freshman Nursing Students (간호대학 신입생의 행동유형에 따른 스트레스, 스트레스 대처방식 및 대학생활적응과의 관계)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to describe stress levels, stress coping methods, and college adjustment according to behavior styles in freshman nursing students. Methods: Data were collected through a structured questionnaire targeting general characteristics, behavior styles, stress levels, stress coping methods, and college adjustment, and were analyzed with descriptive statistics, ANOVA, t-tests, and Pearson correlation using the SPSS program. Results: Stress was related to perceived physical health status, satisfaction with school life, and behavior style. Problem-focused coping was related to exercise, satisfaction with school life, and behavior style. College adjustment was related to place of residence, personality, perceived physical health status, motivation for entrance, and satisfaction with school life. College adjustment had significant positive correlations with stress and problem-focused coping. The relationship between college adjustment and hopeful-thought coping had a significantly negative correlation. Conclusion: These results suggest that identifying the effects of self-understanding programs on stress management and college adjustment is required.

Affecting Factors of Nursing Professionalism Perceived by Nursing Students (간호대학생의 간호전문직관에 미치는 영향 요인)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate nursing professionalism and affecting factors of nursing professionalism in freshman nursing students. Methods: Pre and post-test study design was used to compare the differences of sutdy variables at the completion of a fundamental nursing course. A convenience sample of 164 were recruited. The date were collected from September 1st to December 1st in 2012. Results: The mean scores of the nursing professionalism were significantly increased from a pre-test (3.73) to post-test (3.93). The mean scores of the self-esteem were significantly increased from a pre-test (3.05) to post-test (3.13). Self-esteem and satisfaction with nursing were factors that affect nursing professionalism. Conclusion: Attention should be given to nursing education to cultivate nursing professionalism by improving self-esteem and satisfaction with nursing in nursing students.

  • Using the self-evaluation test proposed by D. Girdano, et al., the psycological, and biological causes and personality factors of the stress of the nursing students of K university in local county are measured and analyzed. As fundamental data to overcome these kinds of stress, the overall stress profiles are proposed. The results of this study are ; 1) The freshman group is very susceptible to the stress due to the behavior type and anxiety-reactive personality. 2) The sophomore group is very susceptible to the stress due to frustration, the behavior type and anxiety-reactive personality. 3) Two groups are not susceptible to the stress due to diet and noise. Since the stress is the multi-dimensional phenomena, it is necessary to reduce these stress that the life style of each Individual students be changed and the curriculm and the teaching methodology in nursing school be developed.

The Influence of Moral Behavior, Biomedical Ethics Consciousness, and Death Attitudes on Hospice Awareness in Nursing Freshman (간호학과 1학년의 도덕적 행동, 생명의료윤리 의식, 죽음 태도가 호스피스 인식에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to provide basic data for developing hospice intervention strategies that can enhance hospice care perception plus attitude toward death of nursing students by grasping the factors affecting the perception of first grade students. Data were collected from 185 nursing students at J university in G-do. Analysis was done using t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient, and Multiple regression with IBM SPSS WIN/25.0. Hospice care perception was correlated to moral behavior (r=.22, p=.002) and biomedical ethics consciousness (r=.29, p<.001). The most influential factor on the subjects' hospice care perception was biomedical ethics consciousness (β=.224, p=.012), followed by high financial competence of parents (β=.187, p=.027). The explanatory power was 11.5%. Therefore, systematic programs that can enhance moral behavior and biomedical ethics consciousness are necessary to promote awareness of hospice care. Also, the following data can be utilized as basic data to help develop hospice education programs.

A study on the Personality of Freshman Nursing Students (간호대학 신입생의 인성과 자아존중감에 관한 연구)

  • Purpose. This study is a descriptive study to investigate the effect of freshmen nursing students personality. Methods. Participants were 237 nursing students who studied in 2 nursing colleges in B metropolitan. The period of data collection was from April 1 to 12, 2019. All of this data is analyzed by Frequencies, mean, standard deviation, t-test, one way ANOVA, and Multiple regression using the SPSS 23.0 program. Results. First, the mean score of the personality and self-esteem were $4.03{\pm}0.57$ and $3.87{\pm}0.84points$. Second, personality was significantly different according to perceived family economic status, perceived interpersonal relations, academic stress, and satisfaction on nursing major. Third, the influencing factor in personality of participants was self-esteem, adjusted R2=.188(p<.001). Conclusions. Development of guidance program to improve level of personality and self-esteem of freshmen nursing students is recommended.

A Study on the Relationship Between Personality, Learning Attitude and Academic Achievement of Nursing Students (간호대학생의 MBTI 성격유형과 학습태도, 학업성취도간의 상관성)

  • Purpose: This study was to explore the relationship between personality type and learning attitude and academic achievement of nursing students. Method: 91 students were sampled from freshman in nursing school. Data were collected from April 2 to October 5 2007. Analysis of the results were carried out using SPSS win 12.0 for frequency, mean and standard deviation, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation. Result: The result of MBTI test was that nursing students in this study showed extraversion(52.7%), sensing(82.4%), thinking(56.0%), judging(57.1%). Academic achievement according to personality was that only feeling(F) type students had significantly higher score of English than thinking(T) type students(p=.013). Learning attitudes according to personality were that sensing(S) type students had significantly positive attitude toward their college than intuition(N) type students (p=.016). And think(T) type students had significantly higher confidence of learning than feeling(F) type students. There was significant positive correlations between learning method and score of English, Fundamental Nursing, Anatomy(p<..05). Conclusions: Diagnosing personality can differentiate student's learning attitude. It is important to develop teaching-learning strategies according to their personality, which can help them to improve their academic achievement.

Factors Influencing Multi-cultural Acceptance of Freshmen in Nursing Colleges (간호대학 신입생의 다문화수용성 영향요인)

  • This study attempted to identify the multi-cultural acceptance level of freshmen in nursing colleges and to analyze the factors influencing it. For the research method, data were collected from 410 first-year nursing students at K University in W City through a questionnaire from March 1 to 28, 2021, and frequency, reliability analysis, t-test, ANOVA, correlation, and multiple regression were conducted using the open-source statistical package R. As a result of the study, the multi-cultural acceptance level of freshman in nursing colleges averaged 77.36 points, indicating that they have a slightly higher multi-cultural acceptance capacity, and as a result of analyzing the influence of multi-cultural acceptance related factors, Korean recognition requirements(𝛽=0.34, p<.001), perceived threat recognition for migrants (𝛽=0.29, p<.001), Experience in multi-cultural education(𝛽=0.14, p<.001), Recognition of the appropriate age for multi-cultural education (𝛽=0.20, p<.001) was statistically significant. According to results, it is necessary to develop and actively utilize regular curriculum and programs related to multi-culturalism for nursing students.
