A nonlinear spectral-line method utilizing the fourth absolute moment of the receiver discrete Fourier transform output is proposed as a non-data-aided fine carrier frequency synchronization algorithm for OFDM receivers. A simple modification of the algorithm resulting in low implementation complexity is also developed. Analytic expressions are derived for the steady-state frequency error variances of the algorithms and verified to be very accurate via computer simulations over AWGN and frequency selective multipath channels. Numerical results show that the proposed algorithms provide reliable and excellent steady-state performance, especially with PSK modulation. Also, the proposed algorithms are insensitive to symbol timing offsets, only requiring a coarse symbol timing recovery.

In OFDMA system, multiple users transmit signal through the subcarriers assigned to the user. Capabilities of high data-rate transmission in OFDMA system come from the ability to compensate the ICI (Inter Carrier Interference) using a single-tap equalizer and to implement transmitter and receiver by employing high speed FFT circuitry. Issues of time and frequency synchronization in OFDM system is quite essential to preserve the orthogonality among subcarriers not to produce ICI. In this paper, we Int analyze the preamble used in 802.16 d/e and WiBro system. Then we propose an effective timing synchronization algorithm, which is more accurate than the conventional one in the sense of timing position, and integral frequency offset estimation scheme for the simultaneouse estimation of the fractional and integral frequency offset. Through the simulation utilizing the proposed synchronization algorithm and structure, we show that the performance degradation due to the adjacent channel interference can be mitigated for the than conventional ones.

The harmonics and the DC offset in the grid can cause serious synchronization problems for grid connected inverters (GCIs) which leads not able to satisfy the IEEE 519 and p1547 standards in terms of phase and frequency variations. In order to guarantee the smooth and reliable synchronization of GCIs with the grid, Phase Locked Loop (PLL) is the crucial element. Typically, the performance of the PLL is assessed to limit the grid disturbances e.g. grid harmonics, DC Offset and voltage sag etc. To ensure the quality of GCI, the PLL should be precise in estimating the grid amplitude, frequency and phase. Therefore, in this paper a novel Robust PLL technique called Digital Lock-in Amplifier (DLA) PLL is proposed. The proposed PLL estimate the frequency variations and phase errors accurately even in the highly distorted grid voltage conditions like grid voltage harmonics, DC offsets and grid voltage sag. To verify the performance of proposed method, it is compared with other six conventional used PLLs (CCF PLL, SOGI PLL, SOGI LPF PLL, APF PLL, dqDSC PLL, MAF PLL). The comparison is done by simulations on MATLAB Simulink. Finally, the experimental results are verified with Single Phase GCI Prototype.

An orthogonal frequency division multiplexing(OFDM) system is effective to bandwidth because of orthogonality of subcarriers and robust to multipath fading. However, if there is a frequency offset, we lose the orthogonality of subcarriers and that results in inter-carrier interference(ICI) which increases errors in the system. In this paper, we propose an algorithm that estimates the fine frequency offset using a correlation method in OFDM systems. This scheme compares two correlation values in different frequency offsets with opposite directions. From the difference between two correlation values we can derive a fine frequency offset estimation algorithm. Its performance is verified by computer simulations.

In this paper we describe the design of symbol timing and carrier synchronization algorithms for burst receiver. The demodulator consists of digital down converter, matched filter and synchronization circuits. For symbol timing recovery we use modified Gardner algorithm. And we use decision directed method for carrier phase recovery. For the sake of performance analysis, we compare simulation results with the board implemented by FPGA which is APEX20KE series chip for Alter. The performance results show it works quite well up to the condition that a frequency offset equal to 0.1% of symbol rate.

In an OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiplexing) system, the sampling frequency offset between the transmitter and receiver is known to cause the interchannel interference (ICI), resulting in performance degradation. In this paper, we propose two time-domain techniques to estimate the sampling frequency offset, especially for a high data-rate OFDM system. The first technique estimates the sampling frequency offset by using the phase difference between two received samples with a fixed amount of time interval, corresponding to the transmitted training symbol, under the assumption of perfect symbol and carrier offset synchronization. The second technique estimates the sampling frequency offset and carrier frequency offset jointly, when the two offsets exist together, by using two training symbols with different frequency components and using a sample algebraic calculation. The proposed estimation techniques for sampling frequency offset cause no time delay due to all time-domain processing, and have a good performance due to no ICI effect. The performances of the proposed techniques are demonstrated by various simulations.

In this paper, we propose and evaluate joint carrier and sampling frequency offset estimation schemes based on the channel estimation sequences in PLCP (Physical Layer Convergence Procedure) preamble for the proper and effcient synchronization of the MB-OFDM WB (Multi-Band Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing Ultra Wide Band) systems which have recently drawn explosive attention for future W-PAN (Wireless Personal Area Network) applications. In the joint estimation schemes, we first estimate the sampling frequency offset, and then estimate the carrier frequency offset using the estimated sampling frequency offset. Moreover, to improve the reliability of the estimated offset values, each process uses a combination scheme based on weighting factors. Simulation results using IEEE 802.15 Task Group 3a UWB channel models reveal that the estimation scheme using the simple weighting factors based on easily-measurable received signal power of each sub-channel shows favorably comparable performance to the ideal scheme using the weighting factors based on the perfectly-estimated frequency response of the channel.
A synchronous multicarrier (MC) code-division multiple access (CDMA) system using inverse fast Fourier transform (IFFT) and fast Fourier transform (FFT) for the downlink mobile communication system operating in a frequency selective Rayleigh fading channel is analyzed. Both carrier frequency offset and timing offset are considered in the analysis. Bit error rate performance of the system with both equal gain combining and maximum ratio combining are obtained. The performance is compared to that of the conventional system using correlation receiver. It is shown that when subcarrier number is large, the system using IFFT/FFT has nearly the same performance as the conventional one, while when the sub carrier number is small, the system using IFFT/FFT will suffer slightly worse performance in the presence of carrier frequency offset.

In this paper, we propose an initial timing and frequency synchronization scheme for low probability detection (LPD) systems with cyclic code shift keying (CCSK). The performance of the LPD system with CCSK highly depend on initial timing and frequency offset. On the other hand, the operating SNR (Signal-to-Noise Ratio) of LPD systems is usually very low. Hence, to guarantee a reliable performance of the LPD system, it is crucial to develop suitable initial synchronization algorithms. In this paper, we propose an initial timing and frequency synchronization scheme suitable for CCSK based LPD system using a repeated preamble pattern.

The synchronization signal in Long Term Evolution (LTE) systems contains the primary synchronization signal (PSS) and the secondary synchronization signal (SSS), and the overall synchronization performance is dominated by PSS detection. In this paper, we propose a PSS detection scheme employing three partial correlation based PSS detectors with different partial correlation lengths, in which calculated partial correlation values are reused in order to reduce computational complexity. A coherent selection scheme using tentative frequency offsets is also proposed to select one reliable result from outputs of partial correlation based PSS detectors. It is shown through computer simulation that the proposed scheme can have a robust detection performance in wide range of frequency offsets.
