A high power diode-array-pumped slab Nd:YAG laser is described. The resonator consists of three mirrors in folded geometry. The laser is operated in acousto-optic Q-switching mode and intracavity frequency doubling is tried. We demonstrate that the laser exhibits frequency doubling efficiency of ∼60% with a type I LBO crystal.
The objective of this study is to improve the accuracy of damage detection using natural frequency and modal strain energy. The following approaches are used to achieve the goal. First, modal strain energy is introduced and newly GA-based damage detection technique using natural frequency and modal strain energy is proposed. Next, to verify efficiency of the proposed technique, damage scenarios for free-free beams are designed and the vibration modal tests as damage cases are conducted. Finally, feasibility of proposed technique is verified in comparison with a GA-based damage detection technique using natural frequency and mode shape.
System to automate the trial-run of energy storage system for frequency regulation was developed and demonstrated. Basic strategy was developed on the basis of trial-run procedure and verified in the computer simulation tool. The algorithm was developed and coded for 4MW trial-run automation system. 4MW trial-run automation system was connected to 4MW energy storage system for frequency regulation in Jocheon substation of Jeju city and demonstrated. 24MW trial-run automation system was developed on the basis of 4MW trial-run automation system and verified by operation system for 24MW energy storage system for frequency regulation. The operation system has own simulation model of energy storage system and power system. The verification was performed to improve the system in the view of user. 24MW trial-run automation system was demonstrated in 32MW Ul-san and 36MW Non-gong energy storage system. All tests of trial-run was done by manual and first they ware taken 1 week with no trial-run automation system. The manual trial-run tests were taken by maximum three times. Trial-run test by trial-run automation system was taken 2 days. The system helps reduce the trial-run test period and improve the accuracy of tests.
This paper presents the control and implementation of the dual-stator-winding induction generator for variable frequency AC (VFAC) generating system. This generator has two sets of stator windings embedded into the stator slots. The power winding produces the VFAC power to feed the loads, and the control winding is connected to the static excitation controller to control the generator for output voltage regulation with speed and load variations. On the basis of the idea of power balance, an instantaneous slip frequency control (ISFC) strategy using the information of both the output voltage and the output power is used in this system. A series of experiments is carried out on a 15 kW prototype for verification. Results show that the system has good static and dynamic performance in a wide speed range, which demonstrates that the ISFC strategy is suitable for this system.
There have been many different definitions of energy functions as the second statistics of a signal. In this paper, using the higher order differential energy function, we propose an algorithm separating the amplitude and frequency components in a discrete sinusoidal signal. The proposed amplitude and frequency estimation methods have less computational requirement than the existing methods. It also shows large computational advantage over the root mean square (RMS) calculation of a signal. The proposed methods can be used in the detection of abnormal events in signals on the power line. Computer simulations show that proposed frequency estimation method can detect the presence of voltage increase or decrease for a short period of time. Also, the proposed estimation methods have been compared with existing methods in terms of estimation error variance.
The ground acceleration measured at a point on the earth's surface is composed of several waves that have different phase velocities, arrival times, amplitudes, and frequency contents. For instance, body waves contain primary and secondary waves that have high frequency content and reach the site first. Surface waves are composed of Rayleigh and Love waves that have lower phase velocity, lower frequency content and reach the site next. Some of these waves could be of more damage to the structure depending on their frequency content and associated amplitude. This paper models critical earthquake loads for single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) inelastic structures considering evolution of the seismic waves in time and frequency. The ground acceleration is represented as combination of seismic waves with different characteristics. Each seismic wave represents the energy of the ground motion in certain frequency band and time interval. The amplitudes and phase angles of these waves are optimized to produce the highest damage in the structure subject to explicit constraints on the energy and the peak ground acceleration and implicit constraints on the frequency content and the arrival time of the seismic waves. The material nonlinearity is modeled using bilinear inelastic law. The study explores also the influence of the properties of the seismic waves on the energy demand and damage state of the structure. Numerical illustrations on modeling critical earthquake excitations for one-storey inelastic frame structures are provided.
In this paper, we designed and fabricated electromagnetic induction based scaffold type energy harvester. For energy harvesting, mechanical energy of vertical motion is transferred to rotational energy using rack gear and multiplying gear was used to maximize energy transfer. To optimize design parameters, physical structure of energy harvester was modeled using finite element method. The effect of multiplying gear ratio and frequency levels of applied mechanical energy on energy generation efficiency are analyzed by computer simulation and experimental test. Experimental results showed that maximum 25.36 W of electric power can be achieved at the frequency of 2 Hz and 1:77 of gear ratio with only 5 mm of vertical changes on scaffold structure.
Frequency responses for most of the local seismic sensors in Korea have been roughly checked by mutual comparison of Fourier spectra of seismic records from accelerometer and seismometer, both of which are installed at the same location. Especially, because the frequency content of the seismic energy is usually above 1 Hz for local earthquakes, the reliability of low frequency response could have not been evaluated. Fortunately a recent large earthquake, Ms=7.2 on 02/06/29 containing dominant low frequency energy makes it possible to check the low frequency response of the seismic sensors, especially EpiSensor and JC-V100. Considering two types of sensor pairs, (STS-2 and EpiSensor, JC-V100 and EpiSensor), the low frequency response of EpiSensor is confirmed first by comparison with STS-2 which has proved low frequency response. Second, reliable low frequency limit of instrumentally corrected seismic data from JC-V100 data is estimated to be about 0.03 Hz by comparison with EpiSensor data.
In this paper, we propose a technique to determine the normal and arc of an alternating current using a mixed filter composed of an average filter and a band-pass filter and a frequency analysis. The proposed method uses the moving average filter of the FIR filter structure for noise removal and the band-pass filter of the IIR filter structure for detecting only specific frequency components after normalizing the measured current signal based on the maximum value. After performing Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) using the band-pass filtered signal, the total energy is calculated using the magnitude component of the frequency, and the arc is detected using the magnitude of the calculated energy. In order to show the validity of the proposed method, we experimented with various data and found that arc and steady state can be easily discriminated by calculating spectral energy. Therefore, it is considered that the proposed method can be applied to arc diagnosis of low voltage electric wire.
In relation to a non-destructive evaluation of irradiation damage of micro-structure of interstitial, void and dislocation, the changes in the hysteresis loop and Barkhausen noise amplitude and the harmonics frequency due to neutron irradiation were measured and evaluated. The Mn-Mo-Ni low alloy steel of reactor pressure vessel was irradiated to a neutron fluence of $2.3\times10^{19}n/cm^2$$(E\ge1MeV)$ at $288^{\circ}C.$The saturation magnetization of neutron irradiated metal did not change. Neutron irradiation caused the coercivity to increase, whereas susceptibility to decrease. The amplitude of Barkhausen noise parameters associated with the domain wall motion were decreased by neutron irradiation. The spectrum of Barkhausen noise was analyzed with an applied frequency of 4Hz and 8Hz, and a sampling time of 50 $\mu$ sec and 20 $\mu$ sec. The harmonic frequency of Joule effect shows 4Hz, 8Hz, 12Hz and 16Hz reflected from an unirradiated specimen. On the contrary, the harmonic frequency disappeared for the irradiated specimen. Harmonic frequency of induced voltage of sinusoidal magnetic field And Spectrum of Barkhausen noise on material is determined.
