  • We developed a real-time three-polarizer spectroscopic ellipsometer based on a new data acquisition algorithm and a general data reduction (the process of extracting the ellipsometric sample parameters from the Fourier coefficients). The data acquisition algorithm measures Fourier coefficients of radiant flux waveform accurately and precisely. The general data reduction is introduced to represent the analytic functions of the standard uncertainties of the ellipsometric sample parameters, and the extracted theoretical values closely agree with the corresponding experimental data. Our approach can be used for optimization of measurement conditions, instrumentation, simulation, standardization, laboratory accreditation, and metrology.

  • In this paper, an efficient short-time Fourier analysis method for the quasi-periodic signals is proposed via an optimal fixed-lag finite impulse response (FIR) smoother approach using a receding horizon scheme. In order to deal with time-varying Fourier coefficients (FCs) of quasi-periodic signals, a state space model including FCs as state variables is augmented with the variants of FCs. Through an optimal fixed-lag FIR smoother, FCs and their increments are estimated simultaneously and combined to produce final estimates. A lag size of the optimal fixed-lag FIR smoother is chosen to minimize the estimation error. Since the proposed estimation scheme carries out the correction process with the estimated variants of FCs, it is highly probable that the smaller estimation error is achieved compared with existing approaches not making use of such a process. It is shown through numerical simulation that the proposed scheme has better tracking ability for estimating time-varying FCs compared with existing ones.

  • This paper presents an analytical method to Investigate the stability of a hydrodynamic journal bearing with rotating herringbone grooves. The dynamic coefficients of the hydrodynamic Journal bearing are calculated using the FEM and the perturbation method. The linear equations of motion can be represented as a parametrically excited system because the dynamic coefficients have time-varying components due to the rotating grooves, even in the steady state. Their solution can be assumed as a Fourier series expansion so that the equations of motion can be rewritten as simultaneous algebraic equations with respect to the Fourier coefficients. Then, stability can be determined by solving Hill's infinite determinant of these algebraic equations. The validity of this research is proved by the comparison of the stability chart with the time response of the whirl radius obtained from the equations of motion. This research shows that the instability of the hydrodynamic journal bearing with rotating herringbone grooves increases with increasing eccentricity and with decreasing groove number, which play the major roles in increasing the average and variation of stiffness coefficients, respectively. It also shows that a high rotational speed is another source of instability by increasing the stiffness coefficients without changing the damping coefficients.

  • We prove a local unique continuation for Schr$\ddot{o}$dinger equations with time independent coefficients. The method of proof combines a technique of Fourier-Gauss transformation and a Carleman inequality for parabolic operator.

  • This paper presents the method for structure borne noise analysis of a flexible body in multibody system. The proposed method is the superposition method using flexible muitibody dynamic analysis and finite element one. This method is executed in 3 steps. In the la step, time dependent quantities such as dynamic loads, modal coordinates ana gross body motion of the flexible body are calculated efficiently through flexible multibody dynamic analysis. And frequency response functions are computed using Fourier transforms of those time dependent quantities. In the 2$\^$nd/ step, acoustic pressure coefficients are obtained through structure-acoustic coupling analysis by finite element analysis. In the final step, frequency responses of acoustic pressure at the acoustic nodes are recovered through linear superposition of frequency response functions with acoustic pressure coefficients. The accuracy of the proposed method is verified in the numerical example of a simple car model.

  • The roughness of Joomoonjin sand and the Dongchun river sand was analysed by the fractal theory. It was found that the fractal dimension(D$\_$F/) of Joomoonjin sand is a little smaller than the Dongchun river sand. That means Joomoonjin sand is smoother than the Dongchun river sand. The measurements of D$\_$F/ of different fraction of the Donchun river sand showed that large particles were rougher than fine particles. The shapes of both sands were analysed by the Discrete Fourier Transform(DFT) and the Grid-based(GB) method. Normalization of coefficients with respect to size, starting point and its orientation made the coefficients invaried to these characteristics. The mean of the normalized coefficients was used to reconstruct the average shape for both sands, respectively. The measurements of the ellipticity ratio of different fraction of both sands showed that Joomoonjin sand is slightly flatter than the Dongcun river sand.

  • Many numerical methods have been developed since 1961, but unresolved issues remain. This study developed a numerical method to address these issues and determine the coefficients and properties of rotational waves with a shear current in a finite water depth. The number of unknown constants was reduced significantly by introducing a wavelength-independent coordinate system. The reference depth was calculated independently using the shooting method. Therefore, there was no need for partial derivatives with respect to the wavelength and the reference depth, which simplified the numerical formulation. This method had less than half of the unknown constants of the other method because Newton's method only determines the coefficients. The breaking limit was calculated for verification, and the result agreed with the Miche formula. The water particle velocities were calculated, and the results were consistent with the experimental data. Dispersion relations were calculated, and the results are consistent with other numerical findings. The convergence of this method was examined. Although the required series order was reduced significantly, the total error was smaller, with a faster convergence speed.

  • In this study, the author provided a discussion on one dimensional Laplace and Fourier transforms with their applications. It is shown that the combined use of exponential operators and integral transforms provides a powerful tool to solve space fractional partial differential equation with non - constant coefficients. The object of the present article is to extend the application of the joint Fourier - Laplace transform to derive an analytical solution for a variety of time fractional non - homogeneous KdV. Numerous exercises and examples presented throughout the paper.

  • This study concerns with John B. Fourier' s life, his teachers, his younger scholars and the $L^1$-convergence of Fourier series. First, we introduce the correlation between the French Revolution and Fourier who is significant in the history of mathematics. Second, we investigate Fourier' s teachers, students and a minor lineage of his younger scholars from 19th century to 20th century. Finally, we compare the theorem of Telyakovskii with the theorem of kolmogorov on $L^1$-convergence of Fourier series.
