Purpose: A hyperextended knee is described as knee pain associated with an impaired knee extensor mechanism. Additionally, a hyperextended knee may involve reduced position sense of the knee joint that decreases the individual's ability to control end-range knee extension movement. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of visual biofeedback information for plantar pressure distribution on knee joint angle and lower extremity muscle activities in participants with hyperextended knees. Methods: Twenty-three participants with hyperextended knees were recruited for the study. Surface electromyography signals were recorded for the biceps femoris, rectus femoris, gastrocnemius, and tibialis anterior muscle activities. The plantar pressure distribution was displayed and measured using a pressure distribution measuring plate. Knee joint angle kinematic parameters were recorded using a motion analysis system. The visual biofeedback condition was the point at which the difference between the forefoot and backfoot plantar foot pressure on the monitor was minimized. The Wilcoxon signed-rank test was used to determine the significance between the visual biofeedback condition and the preferred condition. Results: The knee joint angle was significantly decreased in the visual biofeedback condition compared to that in the preferred condition (p<0.05). The rectus femoris and gastrocnemius muscle activities were significantly different between the visual biofeedback and preferred conditions (p<0.05). Conclusion: The results of this study showed that visual biofeedback of information about plantar pressure distribution is effective for correcting hyperextended knees.
The goal of this study was to investigate the relationship between kinematic and kinetic characteristics of foot joints resisting ground reaction force. Passive elastic joint moment and angular displacement were obtained from the experiment using 3 cameras and force plate. The relationship between joint angle and moment was mathematically modeled by using least square method. The ranges of motion of joints ranged from 5$^{\circ}$ to 7$^{\circ}$ except metatarsophalangeal joint. In the study, we presented simple mathematical models that could relate joint angle and plantar pressure. From this model, we can got the kinematic data of joints which is not available from conventional motion analysis. Furthermore, the model can be used not only for biomechanical model which simulates gait but also for clinical evaluation.

With the aim of examining changes in plantar pressure while walking depending on the position of carrying a bag, this study measured the plantar pressure of 33 normal male and female adults using the F-scan System in four different positions to carry a bag: walking without carrying a bag; walking with carrying a bag on both shoulders; walking with carrying a bag on one shoulder; and walking with carrying a bag in one hand. Changes in the plantar pressure of the subjects obtained in this study and the asymmetry of the left and right feet were analyzed. The plantar pressure of the different areas of the feet in the four different positions to carry a bag was compared. The left foot, except its toes and metatarsus, showed a statistically significant difference among the five conditions, and the right foot, except its 4th and 5th caput metatarsalis, also showed a statistically significant difference (P>.05). Given the results of this study, this experiment to examine changes in plantar pressure does not seem to be enough to identify which position to carry a bag, except carrying a bag on both shoulders, would have the lowest negative impact on the feet. It will be necessary to conduct a follow-up study on changes in plantar pressure depending on the position of carrying a bag and methods that can effectively treat abnormal positions such as scoliosis and kyphosis using asymmetric loads.

This paper presents a numerical analysis of slamming and whipping using a fully coupled hydroelastic model. The coupled model uses a 3-D Rankine panel method, a 1-D or 3-D finite element method, and a 2-D Generalized Wagner Model (GWM), which are strongly coupled in time domain. First, the GWM is validated against results of a free drop test of wedges. Second, the fully coupled method is validated against model test results for a 10,000 twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU) containership. Slamming pressures and whipping responses to regular waves are compared. A spatial distribution of local slamming forces is measured using 14 force sensors in the model test, and it is compared with the integration of the pressure distribution by the computation. Furthermore, the pressure is decomposed into the added mass, impact, and hydrostatic components, in the computational results. The validity and characteristics of the numerical model are discussed.

Background: The purpose of this study is to examine the correlation between high heels and body imbalance among female college students in their twenties who mainly wear high heels and prevent associated problems. Methods: The subjects included 89 female college students in their twenties. They were measured in plantar pressure with a gait analyzer. Their legs were measured in length with a tape measure. Their pain intensity and pain frequency were measured in visual analog scale and in pain rating score. Results: There were statistically positive correlations between right leg length and low back pain frequency (p<.05) and negative correlations between the left hindfoot and low back pain frequency (p<.05). There were statistically positive correlations between right leg length and knee pain frequency (p<.05) and positive correlations between the ankle pain intensity and right leg length (p<.05). Conclusion: The stronger the pain was in the ankle, the stronger and more frequent their lumber pain was. When the pressure of the left heel was lower, the frequency of lumbar pain increased.
The purpose of this study was to identify the effect of the subtalar sling ankle taping, by measuring changes in peak plantar pressure and subtalar angle during jump landing and walking in healthy subjects with subtalar sling ankle taping applied of the ankle joint. Fifty healthy subjects(8 males and 7 female, aged 22 to 25) were randomly divided into a participated in this study. They were free of musculoskeletal injury and neurologic deficit in lower extremity. The subjects were asked to perform 5M walking and single leg jump landing by under the guidance of physical therapists. Subtalar motions were typically measured as the angle made between the posterior aspect of the calcaneous and the posterior aspect of the lower leg during walking with taping or not. This measurement were made using a video system (30Hz sampling rate, rectified 60 Hz sampling rate). At the same time, peak lateral and vertical pressure were investigated using pressure distribution platforms(MatScan system) under foot during walking and single leg jump landing with taping or not. Statistical analysis was done by paired t-test and intraclass correlation coefficient [ICC(3.1)], using software SPSS. We have recently demonstrated significantly altered patterns of subtalr joint and peak plantar pressure when applied subtalar sling ankle taping(p<.05). Inversion angle of subtalar joint significantly decreased with taping(p<.05). The result suggest that pressure patterns observed in subjects are likely to result due to significant decrease in stress on ankle joint structures during jump landing and walking. Also, the result that the subtalar sling ankle taping procedure provides greater restiction of motion associated with ankle inversion. However, this study involved asymptomatic subjects without history of ankle inversion injury, further research is needed to assess the motion restraining effect of the subtalar sling ankle taping in subjects with lateral ankle instability.
The present study deals with the hydroelastic vibration analysis of structures in contact with fluid via coupled fluid-structure interaction (FSI) embedded with a finite element method (FEM) such that a structure displacement formulation is coupled with a fluid pressure-displacement formulation. For the preliminary study and validation of FEM based coupled FSI analysis, hydroelastic vibration characteristics of a rectangular plate in contact with fluid are first compared with the elastic vibration in terms of boundary condition and mode frequency. Numerical results from coupled FSI analysis have been shown to be rational and accurate, compared to energy method based theoretical solutions and experimental results. The effect of free surface on the vibration mode is numerically studied by changing the submerged depth of a rectangular plate. As a practical application, the hull structural vibration of 4,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) container ship is considered. Hydroelastic results of the ship hull structure are compared with those obtained from the elastic condition.

In this paper, the gait imbalance evaluation algorithm based on temporal symmetry ratio using encoder is proposed. The device is attached to the hip joint in order to measure the angle during the normal gait. Using an angle data, the stance phase and swing phase was determined. And the value of TSR(temporal symmetry ratio) was calculated by stance phase and swing phase of gait cycle. For the comparative experiment, the conventional method of the foot pressure was measured at the same conditions. The results of statistical analysis, there was a significant difference (p < 0.05) when using encoder. The gait imbalance analysis using encoder is effective in determining the imbalance than using the existing method of pressure.
In order to produce a convenient robot for the aged and the lower limb disabled, it is needed for the research detecting implicit walking intention and controlling robot by a user's intention. In this study, we developed sensor module system to control the walking- assist robot using FSR sensor and tilt sensor, and analyzed the signals being acquired from two sensors. The sensor module system consisted of the assist device control unit, communication unit by wire/wireless, information collection unit, information operation unit, and information processing PC which handles integrated processing of assist device control. The FSR sensors attached user's the palm and the soles of foot are sensing force/pressure signals from these areas and are used for detecting the walking intention and states. The tilt sensor acquires roll and pitch signal from area of vertebrae lumbales and reflects the pose of the upper limb. We could recognize the more detailed user's walking intention such as 'start walking', 'start of right or left foot forward', and 'stop walking' by the combination of FSR and tilt signals can recognize.
In this study, we analyzed the balance of the both legs and the kinematic analysis of the upper limb segments and joints during archery shooting and compared the differences according to the scores. 9 K-university elite archery athletes participated. Each archer was asked to shoot 3-shots and 5-ends on a 122 cm target at a distance of 70 m. Seven infrared cameras (Qualisys, sweden) and two force plates (Kistler, Switerland) were used to calculate the upper limb segments and joint movements and the center of pressure (COP). When the archers shot 8 points, range of motion of elbow joint angle on drawing-arm and mediolateral COP range of motion on the left foot were larger than when 9-10 points were shot (p<.05). In order to maintain a high score in the archery game, constant balance is required, and the balance of the left foot supporting the bow during the shooting is an important factor. In addition, minimizing elbow joint movement of the drawing-arm supporting the bow will help stabilized shooting.
