This study aimed to compare the fluoride-releasing ability and degree of microbial attachment of a newly developed glass-hybrid restorative material (GH) with those of a high-viscosity glass ionomer (HvGIC), resin-modified glass ionomer (RMGI), and composite resin (CR). In addition, the correlation between fluoride-releasing ability and microbial attachment between materials was evaluated. Specimens were prepared in a disc shape and divided into 4 groups according to the materials (GH, HvGIC, RMGI, and CR). The fluoride release experiments were performed in each group (n = 15). The amount of fluoride released was measured on days 1, 3, 7, 14, 28, and 42 after storage. For the microbial attachment experiment, 12 specimens were produced per group using Mutans Streptococci (S.mutans ), a cariogenic microorganism. S. mutans was cultured on the specimens for 24 hours, and the number of bacteria was measured. GH had the highest cumulative fluoride release and showed a significant difference when compared with RMGI (p = 0.001) and CR (p < 0.0001). Microbial attachment was the lowest in GH; however, no significant difference was observed between the materials (p = 0.169). There was no significant correlation between fluoride release from materials and microbial attachment (p > 0.05). From this perspective, remineralization of low-mineralized areas could be expected due to the high fluoride release of GH, and the effect of delaying the progression of dental caries could be predicted from the low cariogenic microbial attachment. Therefore, GH might be a useful restorative material for treating immature permanent teeth with hypomineralized enamel. However, further studies are needed about the degree of remineralization of hypomineralized areas after restoration and the capacity to recharge fluoride.
Up-conversion of rare-earth element added glass is promising area for short wavelength laser source by utilizing high power semiconductor infra-red laser if the efficiency can be increased by proper method. In this study, relatively low phonon energy fluoride glasses were prepared by co-doping rare-earth elements to realize the high efficiency up-convertor. The physical, chemical, andoptical properties of co-doped fluoride glasses were measured. 10 combinations of 5 different rare-earth fluoride elements doped samples were prepared and their transition temperatures, chemical durability, density, hardness, refractive index, absorption, fluorescence, and fluorescence lifetime were measured. 480nm wavelengths blue up-conversion was found in the Yb3+/Tm3+ co-doped glass sample with 800nm laser source and the optimum composition for the most efficient blue up-conversion was found from the glass sample with 0.3 mol% TmF3 and 1 mol% YbF3.

The replacement of dental restorations due to secondary caries is a continuing problem in restorative dentistry. The secondary caries can be partly prevented by using fluoride containing dental materials such as glass ionomer cement, which releases and be recharged with fluoride ion acting as a fluoride reservoir. For the purpose of investigating the behaviors of fluoride release and recharge of conventional and high viscosity glass ionomer cements, the experiment was performed on the seven specimens each from 4 kinds of materials ; 1 kind of conventional glass ionomer cement, 2 kinds of high viscosity glass ionomer cements and 1 kind of composite resin. The amount of fluoride release was measured over 7 days with pH/ion meter and fluoride specific electrode. After measuring daily fluoride release, the specimens were recharged with 2% NaF solutions for 4 minutes and measured for 3 days with recharging repeated two consecutive times. The results were as follows : 1. Significantly more fluoride was released at first day after recharge in all materials except Z-100. 2. High viscosity glass ionomer cements released more or nearly equal amount of fluoride after recharge compared with the initial release(P<0.05). 3. The fluoride release after recharge with 2% NaF solution was in order of Fuji IX, Ketac Fil, Ketac Molar, Z-100.

There is no adverse opinion on the anticariogenic effect of fluoride, so glass ionomer restoration which release the fluoride is recommended fer child patient. To study the anticariogenic effect of initial carious lesion of fluoride released from adjacent glass ionomer restoration, the in situ model was constructed. A microhardness test, polarized scope investigation and electron probe microanalysis was done for analyzing the distribution of fluoride which was precipitated from glass ionomer restoration to the enamel caries lesion. Fuji IX, the conventional glass ionomer, was used for experimental group and Z-100, composite resin that fluoride was not contained, was used for control group. On the microhardness test, the remineralization was accelerated by fluoride. And on the polarized investigation, the size of caries lesion was reduced in the oral cavity and that phenomenon was accelerated by fluoride, too. Electron probe microanalysis shows that the remineralization was accelerated by fluoride and the fluoride concentration on subsurface area was increased. It maybe that the subsurface area was critical to anticariogenic effect. In summary of these result, initial caries lesion can be remineralized in the oral cavity and that phenomenon can be accelerated by fluoride. The subsurface area of caries lesion was a major part of defense to cariogenic invasion and to conserve the subsurface area, the surface of lesion body have to conserved.

MAS-based glass, which has been studied to replace the ceramic material used in the plasma etching chamber, has problems such as forming and processing due to its high melting temperature. To solve this problem, in this study, fluoride was added to the existing MAS-based glass to increase the workability in the glass manufacturing and to improve the chemical resistance to CF4/Ar/O2 plasma gas. Through RAMAN analysis, the structural change of the glass according to the addition of fluoride was observed. In addition, it was confirmed that high-temperature viscosity and thermal properties decreased as the fluoride content increased and plasma resistance was maintained, it showed an excellent etching rate of up to 11 times compared to quartz glass.

This study was conducted to investigate the fluoride release of fluoride-containing restorative materials in fluoride recharging according to the concentration of fluoride toothpaste used in Korea. Samples of glass ionomer cement, resin-modified glass ionomer cement, alkasite restorative material, and composite resin were prepared and fluoride release was measured on days 1, 3, 7, 14, 21, 28. Thereafter, fluoride-free, 500 ppm, and 1450 ppm fluoride toothpaste was applied to each restorative materials, and the fluoride release was measured on days 1, 3, 7. Glass ionomer cement showed the highest cumulative fluoride release until the 7th day of measurement, and from the 14th day onwards, the resin-modified glass ionomer cement showed the highest cumulative fluoride release, but there was no significant difference. When restorative material groups were recharged with 500 ppm of fluoride toothpaste, the fluoride release was significantly higher only for the alkasite restorative material compared to the fluoride-free toothpaste group (p < 0.017). When restorative material groups were recharged with 1450 ppm of fluoride toothpaste, the fluoride release was significantly higher in all restorative groups compared to the fluoride-free toothpaste group (p < 0.017).
The properties of the glasses are not dominantly dependent on the chemical composition, temperature, and pressure but also on the thermal history. For example, electrical, thermal, optical, and mechanical properties are all known to be strongly dependent on the thermal history. Fluoride glasses have received a great deal of attention as candidate materials for an infra-red transmitting medium. A series of fluoride glasses and fibers were prepared under a nitrogen atmosphere. Thermal history effects of the fluoride glass fibers associated with the fast cooling rate employed during the fiber drawing process were discussed in terms of the glass temperatures and the fictive temperatures on the basis of the results obtained from the Differential Scanning Calorimeter (DSC) measurements of the fiber and bulk forms of the same chemical composition.

This study was to measure and compare the amount of fluoride, microhardness and solubility of high viscosity glass ionomer and resin-reinforced glass ionomer during 84 days. Fuji IX GP EXTRA, Fuji IX GP, Fuji II LC and Filtek$^{TM}$ Z350XT stored in deionized water for 84 days to measure fluoride release, microhardness and solubility. As a result of measurement of fluoride release, all the glass ionomers showed the highest amount of fluoride release on day 1 and gradually decreased. Fuji IX GP EXTRA showed the highest amount of fluoride release and cumulative release. And Fuji IX GP and Fuji II LC showed no significant difference. Microhardness measurements showed that all experimental groups decreased 1 day after exposure to water. After 84 days, microhardness showed no significant difference between Fuji IX GP EXTRA and Fuji IX GP, and Fuji II LC was the lowest. In the solubility measurement, Fuji IX GP EXTRA, Fuji IX GP, and Fuji II LC increased rapidly to 21 days. After 21 days, there was no significant difference in the three groups. As a result, short term fluoride release affects solubility and microhardness, but long term fluoride release has no correlation. Through this study, the amount of fluoride, microhardness, and solubility of various glass ionomers were evaluated, and these properties could be applied clinically.

The aim of the study is to compare the fluoride release and recharge properties of glass ionomer cements and 'alkasite'. Specimens of two glass ionomer cements (Fuji IX GP and Riva Self Cure), 'alkasite' restorative material (Cention N) and composite resin (Filtek™ Z350XT) were prepared. The fluoride release of each specimen was measured for 28 days. Thereafter, 1.23% acidulated phosphate fluoride (APF) gel was applied to experimental groups. No treatment was performed on control groups. The fluoride release was measured for additional 7 days to evaluate the fluoride recharge properties of each materials. The fluoride release was highest in Riva Self Cure, followed by Fuji IX GP, Cention N (p < 0.05). Fluoride release of Cention N was measured to be approximately 49% of Fuji IX GP's. After the application of 1.23% APF gel, increases in fluoride release were observed in Riva Self Cure, Fuji IX GP and Cention N (p < 0.05). Fluoride recharge was observed in Cention N as well as in glass ionomer cements. Further studies are required to evaluate the anti-cariogenic properties of Cention N at clinical conditions.

It is well known that glass-ionomer cement and compomer can release fluoride which can inhibit the progression of dental caries. The purposes of this study were to evaluate whether the fluoride from fluoride-containing filling materials can penetrate the dentin bonding adhesive and the dentin bonding adhesive can increase the bond strength of resin-modified glass ionomer. The amount of fluoride release from resin-modified glass ionomer and compomer was measured during 28 days of period and statistically analyzed by t-test. The bond strength of each material with/without dentin bonding adhesive was measured and also statistically analyzed by t-test. The distribution of fluoride from each material into the tooth was explored by electron probe microanalysis system(EPMA). The experimental teeth used were second primary molars about to exfoliate. The amount of fluoride release from each material was diminished by dentin bonding adhesive during 28 days(p<0.05) and the bond strength was not increased by dentin adhesive in resin-modified glass ionomer. The bond strength of group VI was not detectable. The distribution of fluoride from each material into teeth was according to dentino-enamel junction and dispersed into pulp from pulpal floor. The widest distribution was shown in resin-modified glass ionomer cement filled without the application of dentin bonding adhesive.
