Mechanical strength of functionally graded composite plates that composed of ceramic, functionally graded material and metal layers is investigated using 3-D finite element method. In FGM layer, material properties are assumed to be varied continuously in the thickness direction according to a simple power law distribution in terms of the volume fraction of a ceramic and metal. The 3-D finite element model is adopted by using an IS-node solid element to analyze more accurately the variation of material properties in the thickness direction. Numerical results are compared with those of the previous works. In addition, the displacements, the tensile stresses and the compressive stresses are analyzed for the variation of FGM thickness ratio and volume fraction distribution.Mechanical strength of functionally graded composite plates that composed of ceramic, functionally graded material and metal layers is investigated using 3-D finite element method. A numerical study of a turbulent natural convection in an enclosure with the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) is presented. The primary emphasis of the present study is placed on investigation of accuracy and numerical stability of the LBM for the turbulent natural convection flow. A HYBRID method in which the thermal equation is solved by the conventional Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equation method while the conservation of mass and momentum equations are resolved by the LBM is employed in the present study. The elliptic-relaxation model is employed for the turbulence model and the turbulent heat fluxes are treated by the algebraic flux model. All the governing equations are discretized on a cell-centered, non-uniform grid using the finite-volume method. The convection terms are treated by a second-order central-difference scheme with the deferred correction way to ensure accuracy and stability of solutions. The present LBM is applied to the prediction of a turbulent natural convection in a rectangular cavity and the computed results are compared with the experimental data commonly used for the validation of turbulence models and those by the conventional finite-volume method. It is shown that the LBM with the present HYBRID thermal model predicts the mean velocity components and turbulent quantities which are as good as those by the conventional finite-volume method. It is also found that the accuracy and stability of the solution is significantly affected by the treatment of the convection term, especially near the wall.
The height and speed of the shock wave are critical data in flood-control operations or in the design of channel walls and bridges along rivers with high flow velocities. Therefore, a numerical model is needed for simulating flow discontinuity over a wide range of conditions. In this study, a governing equation. As a Riemann solver Roe(1981)'s one is used. The model employs the modified MUSCL for handling the unstructured grids in this research. this model that adopts the explicit tradditional twl dimmensional dam break problems, two hydraulic dam break model is simulations, and a steady state simulation in a curved channel. Conclusions of this research are as follows : 1) the finite volume method can be combined with the Godonov-type method that is useful for modeling shocks. Hence, the finite volume method is suitable for modeling shocks. 2) The finite volume model combined with the modified MUSCL is successful in modeling shock. Therefore, modified MUSCL is proved to be valid.
In this paper, we present and analyze a fully discrete numerical method for solving the time-fractional diffusion wave equation: ∂βtu - div(a∇u) = f, 1 < β < 2. We first construct a difference formula to approximate ∂βtu by using an interpolation of derivative type. The truncation error of this formula is of O(△t2+δ-β)-order if function u(t) ∈ C2,δ[0, T] where 0 ≤ δ ≤ 1 is the Hölder continuity index. This error order can come up to O(△t3-β) if u(t) ∈ C3 [0, T]. Then, in combinination with the linear finite volume discretization on spatial domain, we give a fully discrete scheme for the fractional wave equation. We prove that the fully discrete scheme is unconditionally stable and the discrete solution admits the optimal error estimates in the H1-norm and L2-norm, respectively. Numerical examples are provided to verify the effectiveness of the proposed numerical method.

In this study, finite element modeling of unidirectional composite materials of the computed tomography (CT) was conducted using a supervised learning-based segmentation technique. Firstly, Micro-CT scan was performed to obtain the raw volume of unidirectional composite materials, providing microstructure information. From the CT volume images, actual microstructure of the cross-section of unidirectional composite materials was extracted by the labeling process. Then, a U-net deep learning model was trained with a small number of raw images as inputs and their labeled images as outputs to generate a segmentation model. Subsequently, most of remaining images were input to the trained U-net deep learning model to segment all raw volume for identifying complex microstructure, which was used for the generation of finite element model. Finally, the fiber volume fraction of the finite element model was compared with that of experimentally measured volume to validate the appropriateness of the proposed method.
The moment-of-fluid (MOF) method is a new volume-tracking method that accurately treats evolving material interfaces. The MOF method uses moment data, namely the material volume fraction, as well as the centroid, for a more accurate representation of the material configuration, interfaces and concomitant volume advection. In this paper, unstructured mesh extension of the MOF method is to be presented. The MOF method is coupled with a stabilized finite element incompressible Navier-Stokes solver for two materials. The effectiveness of the MOF method is demonstrated with a free-surface dam-break problem.

In this paper, structural analysis was conducted by designing a ultra low volume sprinkler applied to spray liquid and applying a ANSYS commercial code for three dimensional finite element method to the ultra low volume sprinkler. Based on this numerical structural analysis, stress, strain and total deformation were obtained and the structure improvement of the ultra low volume sprinkler was made along with improved productivity and shorten design period.
Computational analysis of incompressible flows by numerically solving Navier-Stokes equations using multi-block finite volume method is conducted on a parallel computing system. Numerical algorithms adopted in this study $include^{(1)}$ QUICK upwinding scheme for convective $terms,^{(2)}$ central differencing for other terms $and^{(3)}$ the second-order Euler differencing for time-marching procedure. Structured grids are used on the body-fitted coordinate with multi-block concept which uses overlaid grids on the block-interfacing boundaries. Computational code is parallelized on the MPI environment. Numerical accuracy of the computational method is verified by solving a benchmark test case of the flow inside two-dimensional rectangular cavity. Computation in the axial compressor cascade is conducted by using 4 PE's md, as results, no numerical instabilities are observed and it is expected that the present computational method can be applied to the turbomachinery flow problems without major difficulties.
Transient radiative heat transfer is analyzed in a one-dimensional slab using finite volume method (FVM). In this study, the step, $2^{nd}$ order upwind, and QUICK schemes are used for incident diffuse radiation and collimated beam, respectively. The results for diffuse radiation show that all schemes applied in this study give good agreements with available published results. In case of collimated beam, however, the results show deviations from the analytical solutions. To successfully describe the propagations of collimated beam, shock capturing schemes such as TVD scheme are need to be developed.

The convergence of finite volume method (FVM) or discrete ordinate method (DOM) is known to degrade for optical thickness greater than unity and large scattering albedo. The present article presents a convergence acceleration procedure for the FVM based on a full approximation storage (FAS) multigrid method. Among a variety of multigrid cycles, the V-cycle is used and the full multigrid algorithm (FMG) is applied to an analysis of radiation in irregular two-dimensional geometry. Solution convergence is discussed for the several cases of various optical thickness and scattering albedo. At small scattering albedo and optical thickness, there is no advantage to using the multigrid method for calculation CPU time. For large scattering albedo greater than 0.5 and optical thickness greater than unity, however, the multigrid method improves the convergence and the solution is rapidly obtained.
