This work presents a direct integration scheme, based on a fourth order finite difference approach, for elastodynamics. The proposed scheme was chosen as an alternative for attenuating the errors due to the use of the central difference method, mainly when the time-step length approaches the critical time-step. In addition to eliminating the spurious numerical oscillations, the fourth order finite difference scheme keeps the advantages of the central difference method: reduced computer storage and no requirement of factorisation of the effective stiffness matrix in the step-by-step solution. A study concerning the stability of the fourth order finite difference scheme is presented. The Finite Element Method and the Boundary Element Method are employed to solve elastodynamic problems. In order to verify the accuracy of the proposed scheme, two examples are presented and discussed at the end of this work.
Induction motors have wide applicability in many fields, both in industrial sectors and households, for their advantages of a high efficiency and robust structure. The introduction of power-source-containing harmonics into the induction motor winding lowers its efficiency and increases its temperature, greatly affecting its operation characteristics. In this study, we performed an electromagnetic field analysis using the time-difference finite-element method with the purpose of analyzing the steady-state current characteristics of an induction motor. Additionally, we calculated the steady-state current with a method combining an electromagnetic field equation and a circuit equation. In the electromagnetic field analysis, the nonlinearity was taken into account using the Newton-Raphson method, and a backward time-difference method was employed for the time derivative term. Then, we compared the steady-state current of the induction motor obtained by calculation with the experimentally measured values, thus validating the proposed algorithm. Furthermore, we analyzed the impacts of the shape and material of the rotor conductor bar of the induction motor on the steady-state current of the main winding.
The Finite Element Solutions Is reported on solid-liquid phase change in porous media with natural convection including freezing. The model is based on volume averaged transport equations, while phase change is assumed to occur over a small temperature range. The FEM (Finite Element Method) algorithm used in this study is 3-step time-splitting method which requires much less execution time and computer storage the velocity-pressure integrated method and the penalty method. And the explicit Lax-Wendroff scheme is applied to nonlinear convective term in the energy equation. For natural convection including melting and solidification the numerical results show reasonable agreement with FDM (Finite Difference Method) results.

A numerical method which combines equal-order velocity-pressure formulation originated from SIMPLE algorithm and streamline upwinding method has been developed. To verify the proposed numerical method, we considered the lid-driven cavity flow and backward facing step flow. The trend of convergence history is stable up to the error criterion beyond which the maximum value of error is oscillatory due4 to the round-off error. In the present study, all results were obtained with the single precision calculation up to the given error criterion and it was found to be sufficient for our purpose. The present results were then compared with existing experimental results using laser doppler velocimetry and numerical results using finite difference method and mixed interpolation finite element method. It has been shown that the present method gives accurate results with less memories and execution time than the coventional finite element method.
The dynamic behavior of crankshaft-bearing system in scroll compressor has been investigated using the combined methodologies of finite elements and transfer matrices. The finite element formulation is proposed including the field element for a shaft section and the point element at balancer weight locations, bearing locations, etc., whereas the conventional method is used with the elements. The Houbolt method is used to consider the time march for the integration of the system equations. The linear stiffness and damping coefficients are calculated for a finite cylindrical fluid-film bearing by solving the Reynolds equation, using finite difference method. The orbital response of crankshaft supported on the linear bearing model is obtained, considering balancer weights of motor rotor. And, the steady state displacement of crankshaft are compared with a variation in balancer weight. The loci of crankshaft at bearing locations are composed of the synchronous whirl component and the non-synchronous whirl component.

The paper presents preliminary investigation results for the effect of the baseline correction in the acceleration excitation method on finite element seismic analysis results (such as accumulated equivalent plastic strain, equivalent plastic strain considering cyclic plasticity, von Mises effective stress, etc) of nuclear safety Class I components. For investigation, finite element elastic-plastic time-history seismic analysis is performed for a surge line including a pressurizer lower head, a pressurizer surge nozzle, a surge piping, and a hot leg surge nozzle using the Chaboche hardening model. Analysis is performed for various seismic loading methods such as acceleration excitation methods with and without the baseline correction, and a displacement excitation method. Comparing finite element analysis results, the effect of the baseline correction is investigated. As a result of the investigation, it is identified that finite element analysis results using the three methods do not show significant difference.

This paper presented an evaluation method for the efficiency uncertainty of a three-phase induction motor using finite element analysis. The motor efficiency in the finite element analysis is calculated by the loss separation method as in the actual test. In the process of evaluating the efficiency uncertainty, the difference between the finite element analysis and the actual test is the method of calculating the type-A / B standard uncertainty of the input quantity to estimate the efficiency and each losses. For the input quantities which can confirm the instantaneous values with respect to time, the type-A standard uncertainty in the finite element analysis is calculated from the RMS values or average values having separate periods in the steady state. And, the type-B standard uncertainty in the finite element analysis is assumed to be zero. Also, this paper compared and analyzed the efficiency uncertainty evaluated by the proposed method and the efficiency uncertainty through the actual test.
An explicit direct time integration method based solution algorithm is presented to predict dynamic buckling response of Euler column. On the basis of large deflection beam theory, a plane frame finite element is formulated and implemented into the solution algorithm. The element formulation takes into account geometrical nonlinearity and overall buckling of steel structural frames. The solution algorithm employs the central difference method. Using the computer program developed by the author, dynamic instability behavior of Euler column under impact loading is investigated by considering the time variation of load, load magnitude, and load duration. The free vibration of Euler column caused by a short duration impact load is also studied. The validity and efficiency of the present formulation and solution algorithm are verified through illustrative numerical examples.

Design sensitivity analysis scheme is proposed in an elasto -plastic finite element method with explicit time integration using a direct differentiation method. The direct differentiation is concerned with large deformation, the elasto-plastic constitutive relation, shell elements with reduced integration and the contact scheme. The design sensitivities with respect to the process parameter are calculated with the direct analytical differentiation of the governing equation. The sensitivity results obtained from the present theory are compared with that obtained by the finite difference method in a class of sheet metal forming problems such as hemi-spherical stretching and cylindrical cup deep-drawing. The result shows good agreement with the finite difference method and demonstrates that the preposed sensitivity calculation scheme is a pplicable in the complicated sheet metal forming analysis and design.
In this paper, we present an analysis of dynamic characteristics of an electromagnetic actuator for circuit breakers. It is indispensable to simultaneously analyze magnetic, electric, and mechanical phenomena to obtain the dynamic characteristics of the electromagnetic actuator because these phenomena are closely related to each other in an electromagnetic actuator system. The magnetic equations are computed by using the finite element method (FEM). The electric equations and the mechanical equations, which include the time derivative terms, are calculated by using the time difference method (TDM). The calculated results, which have been obtained by means of the FEM and the TDM, are presented with experimental data.
