  • Various kinds of thermal conductive ceramic/polymer composites (aluminum nitride, aluminum oxide, boron nitride, and silicon carbide/epoxy) were prepared by a casting method and their optical images were observed by FE-SEM. Among these, SiC/epoxy composite shows inhomogeneous dispersion features of SiC and air voids in the epoxy matrix layer, resulting in undesirable thermal conductive properties. To enhance the thermal conductivities of SiC/epoxy composites, the epoxy wetting method which can directly infiltrate the epoxy droplet onto filtrated SiC cake was employed to fabricate the homogeneously dispersed SiC/epoxy composite for ideal thermal conductive behavior, with maximum thermal conductivity of 3.85W/mK at 70 wt% of SiC filler contents.

  • Composites of $Fe_{93.5}Si_{6.5}$ powder and epoxy were prepared using a thermal curing process. Scanning electron microscope (SEM), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) and network analyzer were used to analyze the structure, electromagnetic properties and microwave absorption of the composites. Results show that the saturation magnetization depends on the fraction of the $Fe_{93.5}Si_{6.5}$ powder in the composite, which affects initial permeability. It is believed that the eddy current loss is a dominant factor over 1 GHz and that the resonance frequency of the composite decreases with increasing fractions of $Fe_{93.5}Si_{6.5}$ powder. Finally, reflection loss was calculated from the permeability and permittivity of these composites. Composite with 50 wt.% $Fe_{93.5}Si_{6.5}$ powder fractions and 5 mm thickness showed reflection loss below -20 dB from 3.66 GHz to 4.16 GHz. Therefore, it is believed that thin Fe-Si/epoxy composites may be a good candidate for microwave absorption application.

  • SiC nanoparticles were used to increase flexural properties of polymer matrix. This study was to manufacture huge concentration SiC nanoparticle/epoxy composites and to evaluate the dispersion. During mixing SiC nanoparticle and epoxy, 20 wt% SiC nanoparticle in total composites was used with both stirrer and sonication equipment together. Mixing speed and dispersion were improved with the method by using both stirrer and sonication equipment at the same time via mechanical test and FE-SEM. Based on the results, modeling of SiC nanoparticle dispersion could be established. Ultimately, unidirectional carbon fiber reinforced composites was manufactured using 20 wt% SiC nanoparticle/epoxy. Mechanical property of CFRP using dual stirrer and sonication mixing method was better than composites by single sonication mixing method.

  • Epoxy matrix based composites were fabricated by adding SiC nano fillers. The interfacial properties of composites were varied with different shapes of SiC nano fillers. To investigate the shape effects on the interfacial properties, beta and whisker type SiC nano fillers were used for this evaluation. The dispersion states of nano SiC-epoxy nanocomposites were evaluated by capacitance measurements. FE-SEM was used to observe the fracture surface of different structures of SiC-epoxy nanocomposites and to investigate for reinforcement effect. Interfacial properties between carbon fiber and SiC-epoxy nanocomposites were also evaluated by ILSS (interlaminar shear strength) and IFSS (interfacial shear strength) tests. The interfacial adhesion of beta type nanocomposites was better than whisker type.

  • The good dispersion of nano-materials in epoxy matrix was important parameter for the reinforcement effect, and the evaluation of dispersion degree was to prove it. This work was studied to predict the dispersion condition of nano-SiC powders in SiC/epoxy composites using capacitance measurement. Capacitance was defined to be the electric capacity in proportional to electron charge of the measuring section. In case of nano-SiC powders, the electron charge of SiC/epoxy composites was higher than that of neat epoxy resin. Capacitance was evaluated for each section of SiC/epoxy composites. The prediction of dispersion condition was verified by using capacitance measurement. Dispersion condition of nano-SiC powders in epoxy matrix was evaluated with two different dispersion methods, i.e., sonication and stirring methods. The dispersion degree was also verified with the tensile strength correlating to capacitance.

  • The magnetoelectric characteristics on layered $Fe_{78}B_{13}Si_9/PZT$ and $Fe_{78}B_{13}Si_9/PZT/Fe_{78}B_{13}Si_9$($t_m=0.017$, 0.034mm) composites by epoxy bonding for magnetic field sensor were investigated in the low-frequency range and resonance frequency range. The optimal bias magnetic field $H_{dc}$ of these samples was about 23~63 Oe range. The Me coefficient of $Fe_{78}B_{13}Si_9/PZT/Fe_{78}B_{13}Si_9(t_m=0.034mm)$ composites reaches a maximum of $186mV/cm{\cdot}Oe$ at $H_{dc}=63Oe$, f=50 Hz and a maximum of $1280mV/cm{\cdot}Oe$ at $H_{dc}=63Oe$, resonance frequency $f_r=95.5KHz$. The output voltage shows linearity proportional to ac fields $H_{ac}$ and is about U=0~130.6 mV at $H_{ac}=0{\sim}7Oe$, f=50 Hz, U=0~12.4 V at $H_{ac}=0{\sim}10Oe$, $f_r=95.5KHz$(resonance frequency). The optimal frequency(f=50 Hz) of this sample is around the utility ac frequency(f=60 Hz). Therefore, this sample will allow for ac magnetic field sensor at utility frequency and low bias magnetic fields $H_{dc}$.

  • Magnetic properties of composite materials consisting of polymer filled with ferromagnetic powders (MnZn ferrite, Fe-Si alloy) were investigated in this study. The volume fraction of magnetic powders as fillers was varied from 70 % to 95 %. This paper presents the fabrication method of polymer magnetic composites in an effort to produce the 0-3 types of MnZn ferrite and FeSi as fillers with a proper complex permeability through the optimization of some experimental parameters. The polymer matrix composites were prepared by mixing the crushed ferrites and flaky FeSi powders homogenously with low-density resins (EPDM, epoxy). The relationships among the manufacturing technology of these materials, their filler volume fraction, as well as their complex permeability were measured and analyzed.

  • This paper explain about the development of environmental friendly, low cost and stable supply material i.e., rice husk and shell were used as micro incorporating bio waste filler. Those were processed by ball mill and analyzed through micro observation by FE-SEM, EDS and particle size distribution. The obtained filler was mixed with epoxy resin for the manufacturing of CFRP composite and study tensile properties. In EDS analysis main contents of rice husk and rice husk ash are C, O and Si. When rice husk was burned C and Si ration were increased. Shell powder has C, O and Ca. It caused $CaCO_3$ from shell. Surface weighted mean of rice husk powder is $6.19{\mu}m$ and volume weighted mean is $14.77{\mu}m$. And it has rod type particles which caused hair and husk structure parts. Surface weighted mean of rice husk ash powder is $1.55{\mu}m$ and volume weighted means is $8.20{\mu}m$. Surface weighted mean of shell powder is $2.53{\mu}m$ and volume weighted mean is $5.79{\mu}m$. The tensile decreased with increasing the content of micro filler in CFRP composites. In case of rice husk, the significant decrement of tensile strength was observed. and in case of shell powder, there is no effect of changes take place in tensile strength.
