Study on Failure Diagnosis of Power Transformer Using FRA

  • As the average usage period of transformers increases, it is becoming increasingly necessary to know the internal condition of transformers. It is therefore critically important to establish monitoring and diagnostic techniques that can perform transformer condition assessment. Frequency response analysis, generally known as FRA, is one of the technologies to diagnose transformers. Using case studies, this paper presents the effectiveness of FRA as measurements for detecting transformer failures. This paper introduces the fact that FRA waveforms have useful information about diagnosis of failure on core earths and winding shield, and that the condition outside transformers can affect frequency response characteristics.

  • ATM based MPLS(Multiprotocol Label Switching) is discussed for its provisioning QOS commitment capabilities, Traffic engineering and smooth migration for BcN in Korea. At this time, due to the comprehensive nature of ATM protocol, ATM has been adapted as the backbone system for carrying Internet traffic[1,2,3,4]. This paper presents preventive congestion control mechanisms for detecting HTR(Hard-To-Reach) LSP(Label Switched Path) in ATM based MPLS systems. In particular, we have introduced a HTR LSP detection method using network signaling information in an ATM layer. MPLS related studies can cover LSP failures in a physical layer fault, it can not impact network congestion status. Here we will present the research results for introducing HTR LSP detection methods and control mechanisms and this mechanism can be implementing as SOC for high speed processing a packet header. We concluded that it showed faster congestion avoidance abilities with a more reduced system load and maximized the efficiency of network resources by restricting ineffective machine attempts.

  • To reduce the maintenance expence, and the possibility of electric outage and accident, accurate measurement should be carried. But the classical method has some problems in the aspect of man power, reliability, and expence. In this paper, we propose a new type apparatus, which could detect the degree of contamination on insulators on outdoor insulation system, such as transmission and distribution line insulator and bushing. The new type apparatus consists of Pelltier module, electrode system, and measuring part. At first leakage current detecting method was considered, then with the fault(oxidation of electrode) of that method we should propose a another method. We carried various test to prove the possiblity and reliability of the propoused apparatus. And we get some useful result with laboratory test.

  • A distance relaying algorithm for detecting faults at power transmission line is presented in this paper. The algorithm is based on differential equation from relaton between voltage and current, which is composed of lumped resistance and inductance. During the fault transient state,the voltage and current signals are severely distorted due to the exponentially decaying DC offset and high frequency components, In spite of using small data, the presented integral method to evaluate R and L from voltage and current has high performance against these harmonics including DC offset. Therefore, the presented algorithm can be implemented with only a low order anti-aliasing analog filter and dosen't need any digital filter to remove specific components.

  • This paper proposes a method for detecting irreversible demagnetization using the harmonic analysis of back electromotive force (BEMF) in interior permanent magnet-type brushless DC motors. First, demagnetization patterns, such as equality, inequality, and weighted demagnetizations, are defined and classified by considering the possibility of demagnetization resulting from motor operating characteristics. Second, an available diagnostic model for the harmonic analysis of BEMFs is defined according to pole-slot coefficients because the characteristics of BEMFs under demagnetization conditions are affected by the combination of poles and slots. Third, BEMFs and their harmonic components under normal and demagnetization conditions are analyzed through simulation and experiment to verify the proposed demagnetization detection technique.

  • Despite the numerous electric systems that have been developed, electric fires remain at a similar rate each year in total fires. This paper suggests that it is not enough to prevent electric fires only by the currently used electric system. We have studied ways to improve this situation. we have focused on AFCIs that have already been institutionalized in the United States. AFCIs work by detecting the arc fault in the circuit. This is expected to contribute greatly to reducing electric fires.

  • In this paper, an algorithm to compensate the distorted signals due to CT(Current Transformer) saturation is suggested. Firstly, WT(Wavelet Transform) is used to detect a start point and an end point of saturation. Filter banks which can be easily realized in real-time applications are employed in detecting CT saturation. Secondly, least-square curve fitting method is used to restore the distorted section of the secondary current. Fault simulations are performed on a power system model using EMTP(Electromagnetic Transient Program). A series of test results indicate that WT has superior detection accuracy and the proposed algorithm which shows very stable features under various levels of remanent flux is also satisfactory.

  • A distance protection algorithm for detecting faults at power transmission lines is presented in this paper. The algorithm is based on the differential equation related to the voltage and the current at an equivalent circuit of a transmission line which is composed of the lumped resistance and inductance. The presented integration method has high performance at though the fault voltage and the current are heavily distorted with the DC offset and harmonics which occurred at transient states after faults.

  • This paper presents an on-line diagnosis system for identifying health and faulted conditions in squirrel-cage induction motors using stator current, temperature, and partial discharge signals. The proposed diagnosis system can diagnose induction motor faults such as broken rotor bars, air-gap eccentricities, stator winding insulations, and bearing faults. Experimental results obtained from induction motors show that the proposed system is capable of detecting induction motor faults.

  • This paper proposes an alternative vibration detection method in a squirrel-cage induction motor using flux sensors. The air-gap flux will be changed when mechanical vibration occurs by bearing fault as well as broken rotor bar and air-gap eccentricity. For detecting those flux variations due to vibration, search coils are installed at stator slots. The induction motor with 380 [V], 7.5 [kW], 4 [Poles], 1,760 [rpm] ratings is used. Magnitudes and distortion of the induced voltage from flux sensors are used to discriminate faulted types. As a result, the flux sensor has been proven to be useful for vibration detection. It is compared to the result with vibration sensor as well.
