  • SSDs(Solid State Drives) have many attractive features such as high performance, low power consumption, shock resistance, and low weight, so they replace HDDs to a certain extent. An SSD has FTL(Flash Translation Layer) which emulate block storage devices like HDDs. A garbage collection, one of major functions of FTL, effects highly on the performance and the lifetime of SSDs. However, there is no de facto standard for new garbage collection algorithms. To solve this problem, we propose trace driven offline optimal algorithms for garbage collection of FTL. The proposed algorithm always guarantees minimal number of erase operation. In addition, we verify our proposed algorithm using TPC trace.

An Storage device based on Flash Memory has FTL(Flash Translation Layer) which emulate block storage devices like HDDs. A garbage collection, one of major functions of FTL, effects highly on the performance and the lifetime of devices. However, there is no de facto standard for new garbage collection algorithms. To solve this problem, we propose File Clustering Algorithm. File Clustering Algorithm respect to update page from same file at the same time. So, these are clustered to same block. For this mechanism, We propose Page Allocation Policy in FTL and use MIN-MAX GAP to guarantee wear leveling. To verify the algorithm in this paper, we use TPC Benchmark. So, The performance evaluation reveals that the proposed algorithm has comparable result with the existing algorithms(No wear leveling, Hot/Cold) and shows approximately 690% improvement in terms of the wear leveling.

  • Due to advantages of NAND flash memory such as non-volatility, low access latency, low energy consumption, light weight, small size and shock resistance, it has become a better alternative over traditional magnetic disk drives, and has been widely used. Traditional DBMSs including mobile DBMSs may run on flash memory without any modification by using Flash Translation Layer (FTL), which emulates a random access block device to hide the characteristics of flash memory such as "erase-before-update". However, most existing FTLs are optimized for file systems, not for DBMSs, and traditional DBMSs are not aware of them. Also, traditional DBMSs do not consider the characteristics of flash memory. In this paper, we propose a flash-conscious storage system for DBMSs that utilizes flash memory as a main storage medium, and carefully put the characteristics of flash memory into considerations. The proposed flash-conscious storage system exploits log records to avoid costly update operations. It is shown that the proposed storage system outperforms the state.

  • Recently, NAND flash memory has been widely used in embedded systems, personal computers, and server systems because of its attractive features, such as non-volatility, fast access speed, shock resistance, and low power consumption. Due to its hardware characteristics, specifically its 'erase-before-write' feature, Flash Translation Layer is required for using flash memory like hard disk drive. Many FTL schemes have been proposed, but conventional FTL schemes have problems such as block thrashing and block associativity problem. The KAST scheme tried to solve these problems by limiting the number of associations between data block and log block to K. But it has also block thrashing problem in random access I/O pattern. In this paper, we proposed a new FTL scheme, UDA-LBAST. Like KAST, the proposed scheme also limits the log block association, but does not limit data block association. So we could minimize the cost of merge operations, and reduce merge costs by using a new block reclaim scheme, log block garbage collection.

  • Flash Translation Layer(FTL) which enables NAND Flash memory-based storage system to be used as a block device is designed considering only characteristics of NAND Flash memory. However, since FTL precesses I/O requests which survived against buffer replacement algorithm, FTL algorithm has tight relationship with buffer replacement algorithm. Therefore, if we do not consider both FTL and buffer replacement algorithms, it is difficult to predict the actual I/O performance of the computer systems that have Flash memory-based storage system. The necessity of FTL and buffer replacement algorithm co-design arises here. In this work, we implemented I/O performance evaluation tool, IPSiNS, which simulates both the buffer replacement and FTL algorithms, simultaneously.

플래시 메모리 상에서 B-tree 구현에 관한 기존 연구로서는 BFTL(B-Tree Flash Translation Layer)기법이 최초로 제안되었다.

  • In this paper, we propose a block mapping technique applicable to NAND flash memory. In order to use the NAND flash memory with the operating system and the file system developed on the basis of the hard disk which is mainly used in the general PC field, it is necessary to use the system software known as the FTL (Flash Translation Layer). FTL overcomes the disadvantage of not being able to overwrite data by using the address mapping table and solves the additional features caused by the physical structure of NAND flash memory. In this paper, we propose a new mapping method based on the block mapping method for efficient use of the NAND flash memory. In the case of the proposed technique, the data modification operation is processed by using a blank page in the existing block without using an additional block for the data modification operation, thereby minimizing the block unit deletion operation in the merging operation. Also, the frequency of occurrence of the sequential write request and random write request Accordingly, by optimally adjusting the ratio of pages for recording data in a block and pages for recording data requested for modification, it is possible to optimize sequential writing and random writing by maximizing the utilization of pages in a block.

  • As the capacity of NAND flash module increases, the amount of RAM increases for caching and maintaining the FTL mapping information. In order to reduce the amount of mapping information managed in the RAM, a demand-based address mapping method stores the entire mapping information in the flash and some valid mapping information in the form of cache in the RAM so that the RAM can be used efficiently. However, when cache miss occurs, it is necessary to read the mapping information recorded in the flash, so overhead occurs to translate the address. If the RAM space is not enough, the cache hit ratio decreases, resulting in greater overhead. In this paper, we propose a method using two tables called TPMT(Translation Page Mapping Table) and SMT(Segmented Translation Page Mapping Table) to utilize both temporal locality and spatial locality more efficiently. A performance evaluation shows that this method can improve the cache hit ratio by up to 30% and reduces the extra translation operations by up to 72%, compared to the TPM scheme.

  • Recently e-business such as online financial trade and online shopping using mobile computes are widely spread. Most of mobile computers use NAND flash memory-based storage devices for storing data. Flash memory storage devices use a software called flash translation layer to translate logical address from a file system to physical address of flash memory by using mapping tables. The legacy FTLs have a problem that they must maintain very large mapping tables in the RAM. In order to address this issues, in this paper, we proposed a new caching scheme of mapping tables. We showed through the trace-driven simulations that the proposed caching scheme reduces the space overhead dramatically but does not increase the time overhead. In the case of online transaction workload in e-business environment, in particular, the proposed scheme manifests better performance in reducing the space overhead.

  • Fusion flash memory such as OneNAND$^{TM}$ is popular as a ubiquitous storage device for embedded systems because it has advantages of NAND and NOR flash memory that it can support large capacity, fast read/write performance and XIP(eXecute-In-Place). Besides, OneNAND$^{TM}$ provides not only advantages of hybrid structure but also multi-block erase function that improves slow erase performance by erasing the multiple blocks simultaneously. But traditional NAND Flash Translation Layer may not fully support it because the garbage collection of traditional FTL only considers a few block as victim block and erases them. In this paper, we propose an Erase Group Flash Translation Layer for improving multi-block erase function. EGFTL uses a superblock scheme for enhancing garbage collection performance and invalid block management to erase multiple blocks simultaneously. Also, it uses clustered hash table to improve the address translation performance of the superblock scheme. The experimental results show that the garbage collection performance of EGFTL is 30% higher than those of traditional FTLs, and the address translation performance of EGFTL is 5% higher than that of Superblock scheme.
