  • Interfacial evaluation of glass fiber reinforced carbon nanotube (CNT)-epoxy nanocomposite was investigated by micromechanical technique in combination with wettability test. The contact resistance of the CNT-epoxy nanocomposite was measured using a gradient specimen, containing electrical contacts with gradually-increasing spacing. The contact resistance of CNT-epoxy nanocomposites was evaluated by using the two-point method rather than the four-point method. Due to the presence of hydrophobic domains on the heterogeneous surface, the static contact angle of CNT-epoxy nanocomposite was about $120^{\circ}$, which was rather lower than that for super-hydrophobicity. For surface treated-glass fibers, the tensile strength decreased dramatically, whereas the tensile modulus exhibited little change despite the presence of flaws on the etched fiber surface. The interfacial shear strength (IFSS) between the etched glass fiber and the CNT-epoxy nanocomposites increased due to the enhanced surface energy and roughness. As the thermodynamic work of adhesion, $W_a$ increased, both the mechanical IFSS and the apparent modulus increased, which indicated the consistency with each other.

  • Polyether-clay nanocomposite was not polymerized with stearyltrimethylammonium ion exchanged montmorillonite, but it was self-polymerizable when heated with both stearyltrimethylammpmoim and m-phenylenediammonium ions intercalated montmorillonite to form polyether-clay nanocomposites. Molcular disperion of montmorillonite within the crosslinked epoxy matrix verified using X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy found that the final product contains a uniform dispersion of exfoliated $10{\AA}$ thin clay layers seperated by $250{\sim}500{\AA}$of polyether polymer, thus verifying the nanocomposite structure.

  • The effect of reactive diluents on the ac electrical treeing in epoxy/nanosilicate systems was studied, in a needle-plate electrode geometry. Diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) type epoxy was used as a base resin, and layered silicate was used as a nano-sized filler. Polyglycol (PG) or 1,4-butanediol diglycidyl ether (BDGE) was introduced as a reactive diluent to the DGEBA/nanosilicate system, in order to decrease the viscosity of the nanocomposite system. PG acted as a flexibilizer, and BDGE acted as a chain extender, after the curing reaction. To measure the treeing propagation rate, a constant alternating current (ac) of 10 kV/4.2 mm (60 Hz) was applied to the specimen, in a needle-plate electrode arrangement, at $30^{\circ}C$ of insulating oil bath. When 10 kV/4.2 mm (60 Hz) was applied, the treeing propagate rate in the DGEBA system was $1.10{\times}10^{-3}$ mm/min, and that in the DGEBA/PG system was $1.05{\times}10^{-3}$ mm/min. As 1.5 wt% of nanosilicate was added to the DGEGA/PG system, the propagation rate was $0.33{\times}10^{-3}$ mm/min. This meant that the nano-sized layered silicates would act as good barriers to treeing propagation. The effect of chlorine content was also studied, and it was found that chlorine had a bad effect on the electrical insulation property of the epoxy system.

  • In order to overcome drawbacks in the conventional preparation of epoxy/silica nanocomposites, such as formation of micro voids and dimensional instability caused by evolution of volatile by-products during curing reaction, a novel preparation method using Si-N precursor has been proposed. When prepared through in-situ reaction of epoxy curing reaction with sol-gel reaction of Si-N precursor, methyltripiperidinylsilane (MTPS) which does not produce by-products during reaction, epoxy/silica nanocomposites of extremely even dispersion of inorganic phase could be successfully prepared, resulting in high enhancement of mechanical and thermal properties as well as outstanding transparency.

  • Graphene doped zinc oxide nanoparticles (G-ZnO) were prepared using modified hummer's technique together with the ultrasonic method and characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). Different samples of epoxy resin nanocomposites reinforced with G-ZnO nanoparticles were prepared and were marked as F1 (without adding nanoparticles), F2 (1% w/w G-ZnO), and F3 (2% w/w G-ZnO) in combination of ≈ 56:18:18:8w/w% with epoxy resin/hardener, ammonium polyphosphate, boric acid, and Chitosan. The peak heat release rate (PHRR) of the epoxy nanocomposites was observed to decrease dramatically with the increasing G-ZnO nanoparticles. However, the LOI values increased significantly with the increase in wt % of G-ZnO nanoparticles. From the UL-94V data, it was confirmed that the F2 and F3 samples passed the flame test and were rated as V-0. The results obtained in the present work clearly revealed that the synthesized samples can be used as efficient materials in fire-retardant coating technology.

  • Pulverization characteristics of H-kenyaite in vibration mill and exfoliation property in epoxy of pulverized H-kenyaite was investigated by using XRD, SEM, TEM. and particle size analyzer. Pulverization was conducted for 0.5~5 h. The particle morphology of sample pulverized for 1 h preserved plate-shape. However, this plate-shape disappeared in the sample pulverized for 3 h. The XRD pattern of sample pulverized for 1 h showed the characteristic peak of H-kenyaite. However, the peak disappeared in samples pulverized above 3 h, indicating severe destruction of H-kenyaite structure. TEM analysis for the kenyaite/epoxy nanocomposites exhibited only gallery expansion of 3~5 nm in non-pulverized sample, but dramatical large expansion of 5~10 nm in the samples pulverized during 1 h. This results confirm that the pulverization of wide plates composed of H-kenyaite particle have largely affect on the formation of an exfoliated kenyaite-polymer nanocomposite.

  • A epoxy/multilayered silicate nanocomposite was prepared by a new AC electric application method and micro silica particle was poured into the nanocomposite in order to prepare epoxy/micro-and-nano- mixed composites (EMNC). Electric insulation breakdown strength was measured in a sphere-sphere electrode system designed for the prevention of edge breakdown and the data were estimated by Weibull plot. As the exfoliated silicate nano-plates were homogeniously dispersed in the micro silica particles, the insulation property was higherd.

  • The optical properties of $TiO_2$ thin films dispersed in epoxy film, which were prepared with bis-(4, 4'-P-toluenesulfonylacidic isoproplyidene) cycolhexadiol(BTSPC) and UVI 6990 in dry sol-gel process, were investigated. In the case of irradiating UV light on $TiO_2$ thin films, how many nanopartlcles of $TiO_2$ are dispersed in epoxy film was investigated by AFM. The absorption peak of the films was showed at 360nm. Squarylium dye was dispersed in $TiO_2$-epoxy film. Photodegration concerned with amount of dye and time of UV light irradiation was investigated. UV light irradiation on the film occurred dramatical photodegration.

  • It is well-known that the mechanical properties of MMT (montmorillonite) nanocomposites are better than those of conventional composites. One of problems in fabricating MMT nanocomposites is a dispersion of nanoparticles in the composites. In this study, tensile tests were performed using universal testing machine to determine the effect of clay reinforced on the MMT/epoxy nanocomposites. It was found that the elastic modulus of nanocomposites was higher than that of pure epoxy irrespective of surface modification. Because MMT clay hod Strain of nanocomposite as a result of reinforced effect
