  • This study seeks to analyze how children's moral emotions affect their social competence. Moral emotions focus on empathy and sympathy. The purpose of this research is to offer basic data for establishing both amoral and emotional educational program. The subjects of this research involve 182 children(either 4 or 5 year olds) that have lived in Korea. Analysis of the collected data have yielded some interesting results. First, it is found that children's empathy and sympathy are dependent on children's age and their fathers' educational level; as a result, increasing the age of the children and their fathers' educational level are found to increase empathy and sympathy. Secondly, both empathy and sympathy scores are found to have correlation to the scores of positive reciprocity, capability, and interpersonal relation on social competence. Sympathy scores increase with respect to the leadership scores of social competence. Lastly, children's empathy is a factor that affects positive reciprocity, capability, interpersonal relation, and participation on social competence. Their sympathy affects leadership on social competence. The results of this study suggest that strengthening the empathy and sympathy levels of children could partially enhance their social competence.

  • This study aimed to identify the impact of major variables such as self-esteem, empathy, and depression on major satisfaction among nursing students, construct a hypothesis model, and identify direct and indirect effects through path analysis. Data were collected from 200 nursing students between 2 March and 30 March, 2023 from two universities in C-Do, data were analyzed with SPSS 26.0 and AMOS 23.0. In the final model, self-esteem (𝛽=.29, p=.001), empathy (𝛽=.49, p=.001), and depression (𝛽=-.21, p=.032) had a direct effect on major satisfaction. Additionally, self-esteem (𝛽=.12, p=.031) had an indirect effect on major satisfaction through depression. The explanatory power of empathy, self-esteem, and depression for major satisfaction was confirmed to be 36%. Increasing self-esteem and empathy will not only directly increase major satisfaction, but indirectly lowering depression and increasing self-esteem will also increase major satisfaction. Therefore, when developing a nursing education program that increases nursing students satisfaction with their major, it is necessary to develop cognitive behavioral strategies that can increase self-esteem and empathy and reduce depression.

  • The purpose of study is to measure nurses' empathy levels and to examine the effects of their empathy levels on their life and job satisfaction. The questionnaire was administrated to 150 nurses working in hospitals in Busan. The questionnaire consists of three factors : empathy level, life satisfaction, and job satisfaction. Nurses are classed into two : shift work nurse and non-shift work nurse by their work type. 144 out of 150 questionnaires were used for the analysis with IBM SPSS Statistics 21. The shift work nurses with higher empathy levels showed higher job satisfaction. The non-shift work nurses with higher empathy level revealed higher life satisfaction. Interestingly, while empathy level had positive effects on shift work nurses' job satisfaction(${\beta}=.282$, p=.006), it also had impact on non-shift work nurses' life satisfaction positively(${\beta}=.252$, p=.048). As results show, nurses' life and job satisfaction were positively related to their empathy levels. Given the fact that lack of nurses' empathy often lead to conflicts with patients, in order to improve nurses' job performance, we need a new perspective of understanding the important role of empathy in nurses' job satisfaction and life satisfaction.

  • Medical education can provide students with an opportunity to encounter marginalized communities and motivate them to become involved with the needs of disadvantaged people. The College of Medicine of The Catholic University of Korea includes a social service program in the medical humanities and social sciences curriculum. The course has lectures on social welfare, human rights, and social service, as well as four days of social service in 'Flower Village,' which is a Catholic social welfare institution. This study analyzes the satisfaction, feedback, and reflection papers of students who completed the social service program and provides an educational model for the medical humanities and social sciences. Students' satisfaction with the program was scored at 4.23 out of 5. A qualitative study of students' reflection papers derived 7 key phrases, among which 'nature and practice of social service,' 'holistic understanding of humans,' 'empathy and communication,' and 'social responsibility' are identified as goals of this program and 'happiness,' 'respect for human life,' and 'compassion' are good indicators of students' compassionate participation. Encounters with marginalized communities within the medical curriculum allows students to serve people with social difficulties and work for the improvement of their living conditions. Students learn to approach social needs with concern and empathy and seek ways to contribute to those communities.
