The Effects of Mothers' Emotional Expression and Self-compassion on Preschoolers' Emotion Regulation: The Mediating Role of Preschoolers' Self-compassion (어머니의 정서표현 및 자기자비가 유아의 정서조절능력에 미치는 영향: 유아 자기자비의 매개효과)

  • Objective: This study aimed to determine whether preschoolers' self-compassion mediates the effects of mothers' emotional expression and self-compassion on preschoolers' emotional regulation abilities in children aged 4 to 6 years. Methods: The study included 305 mothers residing in City J who were raising preschoolers aged 4 to 6. Data collected were analyzed for the significance of the mediating effects among the main variables using the GLM Mediation Model in the JAMM package of the Jamovi 2.3.16 statistical program. Results: Firstly, statistically significant positive and negative correlations were found among the main variables. Secondly, preschoolers' positive self-compassion was found to partially mediate the relationship between mothers' positive emotional expression and preschoolers' emotional regulation abilities. Furthermore, preschoolers' negative self-compassion partially mediated the relationship between mothers' negative emotional expressions and preschoolers' emotional regulation abilities. Conclusion/Implications: This study identified parental and child variables influencing preschoolers' emotional regulation abilities and discussed intervention strategies for education and counseling to enhance these abilities.

A Path Analysis of Variables Influencing Turnover Intention Among Healthcare Providers (보건의료인의 이직의도 경로모형 분석)

  • Purpose: This study was to explore the relationships among emotional labor, social support, job satisfaction, organizational commitment, and turnover intention in healthcare providers. Methods: Participants were healthcare providers (54 male and 328 female) with a mean age of 30.28 years old. Data analysis were done with PASW 18.0 for descriptive statistics and AMOS 5.0 for path analysis. Results: The hypothetical path model showed a good fit to the empirical data (${\chi}^2$=4.178, df=2, p= .124, GFI= .997, NFI= .995, NNFI= .987, RMSEA= .053). Emotional labor, job satisfaction, and organizational commitment had significant direct effects on turnover intention. Social support had a significant direct effect on emotional labor, job satisfaction and organizational commitment, and indirect and total effect on turnover intention. Conclusion: These findings suggest that turnover prevention or education programs for healthcare providers should include maintaining good mood when interact with patients or visitors with various negative moods in healthcare setting. Further strategies may need to resolve emotional labor, enhance job satisfaction and organizational commitment, and provide social support.

Buyer's Evaluation and Emotional Experience Analysis on Digital Products by Using the Content Analysis of On-line Reviews (온라인 사용후기 내용분석을 통한 디지털 제품에 대한 구매자의 평가와 감성체험 분석)

  • This study intends to provide foundational data for enhancing the welfare of customers purchasing digital products through analyzing the notes from written on-line reviews. The data used for the analysis are 6,342 on-line reviews for cell phones and digital cameras released from November, 2007 until April, 2008, which was posted on Naver Knowledge Shopping from November, 2007 until June, 2008. Through the on-line reviews, this article analyzed the evaluations on the digital products' hardware, software, design, service, price, and other criteria and the customers' emotional experience in the process of purchase, use, and possession. According to the results of the analysis, negative evaluation and emotional experience were originated from the company's information provision methods and purchase process. In addition, insufficient information searches in the process of online purchases, consumers' low right consciousness, and impolite on-line reviews were also problematic. Customers' evaluations and emotional experiences on digital products were conducted in a complex way. Based on that, this research makes suggestions in the company's marketing, customer education, and theoretical aspect.

Children's Somatic Symptoms and Related Parent and Child Variables (아동의 신체화 증상 경험과 관련 부모 및 아동 변인)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the prevalence of children's somatic symptoms and the relationships among parent and child variables such as parenting attitude, children's anxiety, emotional expressiveness and somatic symptoms. The subjects were 523 6th grade students in four elementary schools located in Seoul, Busan and Daejeon. All subjects were tested with the Korean version of Children's Somatization Inventory (K-CSI), Parental Rearing Attitude Inventory, State-Trait Anxiety for Children (STAIC), and The Emotional Expressiveness Questionnaire. The collected data were analyzed by the frequency and percentage of somatic symptoms the children had experienced during the last 2 weeks; Pearson's correlation and multiple regression were used for the selected data of 10 somatic symptoms which were experienced by over 10% of the children. The results are summarized as follows: First, abdominal pain, headache, dizziness, and memory failure, in that order, were experienced in over 20% of the children. Second, children's somatic symptoms had significant relations with mothers' and fathers' loving-denial attitudes and their anxiety and emotional expressiveness. Third, children's somatic symptoms were influenced by their anxiety and emotional expressiveness, but not by parenting attitude.

The Relationship of Emotional Labor, Empowerment, Job Burnout and Turnover Intention of Clinical Nurses (병원 간호사의 감정노동, 임파워먼트, 직무소진 및 이직의도 간의 관계)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the relationships among emotional labor, empowerment, job burnout, and turnover intention. Methods: The design of this study was a cross-sectional descriptive study. The subjects of this study were 358 nurses working for over 6 months in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do. The data were collected from 4th to 30th of September, 2009 through one-to-one interviews. Survey data were analyzed using t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and hierarchical regression. Results: We find the positive correlation of turnover intention with emotional labor and with job burnout, but the negative correlation of empowerment with job burnout and with turnover intention. The nurses' turnover intention scores were relatively low with 1.30. Job burnout, shift work, and frequency of turnover were predictors of turnover intention. The most powerful predictor variable was job burnout (${\beta}$=.420, p<.001). We find that emotional labor and empowerment as determinants of turnover intention are not significant. Conclusion: These results suggest that manager should consider shift work of nurses and job burnout in order to manage nurse organization and resource effectively.

Emotional Labor Experienced of Ward Nurses (포커스 그룹으로 본 병동간호사의 감정노동 경험)

  • Objectives: The objective of this study was to describe the emotional labor experiences of ward nurses in Korea. Methods: The data were collected through focus group interviews with seven ward nurses. The phenomenological analytic method suggested by Colaizzi was used to analyze the data. Results: Four theme clusters and eleven themes emerged from the analysis. The first theme cluster, 'Terrible working environment' includes changes in the health environment and realities of nursing organization. The second theme cluster, 'Suppressed feelings' includes institutionalized power trip, patient-centered emotion management and burning. The third theme cluster, 'Tired body and mind' includes withdrawal, wounded self-esteem, burnout and turnover desicion. The fourth theme cluster, 'Want to be comforted' includes emotional control and wishing to live as a nurse. Conclusions: The findings of this study provide an understanding of the emotional labor experiences of ward nurses to explain their perceptions and language. The essence of the emotional labor of ward nurses is a negative working environment created by increased competition in the healthcare industry and the nature of nursing organization, and as a result their quality of life has fallen.

GA-optimized Support Vector Regression for an Improved Emotional State Estimation Model

  • In order to implement interactive and personalized Web services properly, it is necessary to understand the tangible and intangible responses of the users and to recognize their emotional states. Recently, some studies have attempted to build emotional state estimation models based on facial expressions. Most of these studies have applied multiple regression analysis (MRA), artificial neural network (ANN), and support vector regression (SVR) as the prediction algorithm, but the prediction accuracies have been relatively low. In order to improve the prediction performance of the emotion prediction model, we propose a novel SVR model that is optimized using a genetic algorithm (GA). Our proposed algorithm-GASVR-is designed to optimize the kernel parameters and the feature subsets of SVRs in order to predict the levels of two aspects-valence and arousal-of the emotions of the users. In order to validate the usefulness of GASVR, we collected a real-world data set of facial responses and emotional states via a survey. We applied GASVR and other algorithms including MRA, ANN, and conventional SVR to the data set. Finally, we found that GASVR outperformed all of the comparative algorithms in the prediction of the valence and arousal levels.

The Moderating Effects of Social Support between Emotional Labor and Job Satisfaction in Clinical Nurses (임상간호사의 감정노동과 직무만족 간의 관계에서 사회적 지지의 조절효과)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the moderating effects of social support between emotional labor and job satisfaction in clinical nurses. Methods: Participants were 311 clinical nurses and data were collected from July 11th to 18th, 2014. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient and hierarchical multiple regression with SPSS 21.0. Results: The job satisfaction indicated a significant relationship to surface-acting (r=-.191, p=.001), deep-acting (r=.179, p=.002) and social support (r=.342, p<.001) respectively. Emotional labor significantly affected job satisfaction (F=11.592, p<.001), and explained 5.4% of the variance in job satisfaction. The social support acted as a moderator on the relationship between emotional labor and job satisfaction at significant level (F=11.416, p<.001). Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that it is important to develop social support promoting and stress relief program for clinical nurses to improve job satisfaction.

The Effects of Emotional Labor and Job Involvement on Turnover Intention of Nurses in Long-term Care Hospitals (요양병원 간호사의 감정노동과 직무몰입이 이직의도에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the influencing factors on turnover intention of nurses in long-term care hospitals. Methods: Data were collected from 210 nurses in 11 long-term care hospitals in B city. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and Stepwise multiple regression. Results: Turnover intention was significantly correlated with emotional labor(r=.35, p<.001) and job involvement (r=-.38, p<.001). In a multiple regression, emotional labor (${\beta}=.31$, p<.001), age (${\beta}=-.27$, p<.001), job satisfaction (${\beta}=.24$, p<.001), job involvement (${\beta}=-.23$, p<.001), and number of patients assigned(${\beta}=.14$, p=.009) were associated with turnover intention. These factors attributed to 41.2% of the total variance in turnover intention. Conclusion: Considering the results of this study, proactive educational and/or human resource management interventions need to be developed especially for those younger nurses in order to reduce emotional labor as well as to promote job satisfaction and job involvement of nurses in long-term care hospitals.

The Developmental Trajectory of the Value of Children of Primiparous Mothers During the First Four Years (초산모의 출산 후 4년간 자녀가치 변화궤적)

  • This paper examined the longitudinal changes observed in the emotional and instrumental values of children of primiparous mothers during the first to fourth year of childhood. Using latent growth modeling, the authors analyzed the four waves of data collected from 937 mothers and their firstborn babies nationwide in South Korea. This data was harvested from the Panel Study on Korean Children conducted by the Korea Institute of Child Care and Education. The results indicate that emotional and instrumental values of children showed decreasing patterns. When each year's parenting stress was controlled, the emotional value of children tended to increase, whereas the instrumental value of children showed no significant change. Generally, it was found that the higher the parenting stress of each year, the corresponding year's value of the children tended to be lower, except in the case of the first year's emotional value of children. How these results can be best interpreted as well as the implication of these results is also discussed.
