  • A case of primary malignant fibrous histiocytoma(MFH) of the lung occurring in a 62-year-old man is presented. After preoperative bronchial blushing and washing cytologic diagnosis of poorly differentiated carcinoma, surgical resection and lymph nodes dissection were performed. Subsequent histologic examination revealed a primary MFH. The diagnosis was confirmed by electron microscopic and immunohistochemical examinations. The review of the bronchial brushing and washing cytologic features disclosed many bipolar and a few unipolar spindle tumor cells with a "comel" configuration, mainly single cells, but also forming loose clusters. The nuclei were elongated and hyperchromatic and contained one or more irregular nucleoli. Scattered bizarre, multinucleated tumor giant cells were also present.

실새삼(Cuscuta australis R. Brown) 흡기(吸器)에서의 통도세포(通導細胞)에 관한 연구 (Studies on the Conducting Cells in the Haustorium of Cuscuta australis R. Brown)

  • The elongated filamentous haustorial cells, hyphae, of Cuscuta australis R. Brown penetrated into the vascular tissues of the host plant Trifolium repens L. were studied by the light and electron microscopes. The hyphae reached the host xylem were invaded into the host vessels and then they grew within the host vessels. Finally these hyphae were differentiated into the water conducting elements, xylary hyphae, by thickening of the secondary walls. The hyphae reached the host phloem were branched at the apical regions. These hyphae possessed thin-layered cytoplasm involving the typical features of sieve elements such as the parallel arrays of smooth endoplasmic reticulum, plastids with the clusters of fine starch granules, and mitochondria with the dilated cristae. It was indicated that these hyphae were differentiated into the nutrients conducting elements, phloic hyphae. The structures described were compared with those of other parasitic plants and were discussed in view of the translocation of materials from host to parasite.

A Simple Method for Assessing Severity of Common Root Rot on Barley

  • Common root rot caused by Cochliobolus sativus is a serious disease of barley. A simple and reliable method for assessing this disease would enhance our capacity in identifying resistance sources and developing resistant barley cultivars. In searching for such a method, a conidial suspension of C. sativus was dropped onto sterilized elongated subcrown internodes and incubated in sandwich filter paper using polyethylene transparent envelopes. Initial disease symptoms were easily detected after 48h of inoculation. Highly significant correlation coefficients were found in each experiment (A, B and C) between sandwich filter paper and seedling assays, indicating that this testing procedure was reliable. The method presented facilitates a rapid pre-selection under uniform conditions which is of importance from a breeder's point of view.

  • 작약절편을 접종하면 배지와 절편이 흑갈색으로 변하고 수 이로부터 배양이 죽기 시작하는데 배지성분 중에 이를 조장하는 물질이 있음을 발견하였다. 즉 변색의 주원인은 철분과 염화칼슘(Cacl$_2$)이었고, 절편을 괴사시키는데 가장 큰 영양을 미친 것은 NO$_3$었다. 이 결과를 토대로 피해가 비교적 적은 1/4 MS를 번식용 배지로 이용하여 식물체의 모든 부분을 배양하였을 때 조직으로부터 재생은 전혀 일어나지 않았다. 다만 줄기절편에서 이미 형성된 액아가 유식물체로 성장하기도 하였으나 건전한 것으로 계속 성장하지 못하였으며 이것을 다시 번식체로 이용할 때는 초기 배양의 절편에서 나타나는 현상과 같은 원인으로 인하여 생존하지 못하였다.

Embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma in the abdominal cavity of an aged Sprague-Dawley rat

  • We report a spontaneous embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma in the abdominal cavity of an aged (88-week-old) Sprague-Dawley rat. The animal had a firm lobulated $5{\times}5{\times}4.5cm$ mass in the abdominal cavity that was whitish to tan with necrotic and hemorrhagic plaques. Microscopically, the mass contained nodules with spindle or globoid shaped neoplastic cells with abundant eosinophilic cytoplasm and round or elongated nuclei mixed with other spindle cells with a filamentous appearance and scanty cytoplasm. Multinucleated cells and cross-striations were also observed. The neoplastic cells were positive for vimentin, desmin, and alpha-smooth muscle actin, especially the small spindle cells.

  • A single juvenile malacanthid specimen (Hoplolatilus chlupatyi) was collected from the South Sea of Korea and identified by DNA barcoding. This species is readily distinguished from other malacanthid species in having well developed rostral spine and elongated spines in the posttemporal and preopercle. A molecular analysis based on mitochondrial DNA COI sequences showed that this species is matched to adult H. chlupatyi (genetic distance = 0.005). Therefore, this is the first record of H. chlupatyi in Korea. We propose new Korean names, "Mu-ji-gae-og-dom-sog" for the genus Hoplolatilus and "Mu-ji-gae-og-dom" for the species H. chlupatyi.

  • $MgB_2$ bulk samples are synthesized through solid state reaction route using Mg precursors with different particle size by keeping the boron precursor unchanged. Scanning electron microscopy study of the fractured surface for all the samples depicts quite distinct structure depending on the Mg precursor. Big size of Mg precursor resulted in to largely elongated and deep pores while smaller one gave roughly ellipsoidal and shallow pore structure. Influence of the Mg particle size on the grain to grain connectivity reflected in the critical current density value which was greater for samples with smaller Mg precursor. All the synthesized samples undergo a superconducting transition at around 36.5 K irrespective of different Mg precursor particle size.

  • One of the areas in the continuous casting process that up to this point, has not been definitively instrumented is a method of reliably locating the part of a continuously cast strand that remains liquid for a period after the outer portion has solidified. To solve the problem. Electromagnetic Trandsducers(EMAT) which operate across an air gap without the need for a coupling medium has been developed. The system was designed to employ a through transmission technique which enhanced the signal-to-noise ratio. The Al 75$\times$75mm and 75$\times$100mm simulators with 2, 4, 8, 16, 32 mm hole respectively has been produced in order to verify the developed EMAT system and to measure to liquid core in continuous casting strand. The system developed can be employed for the optimization of torch cutting speed and for the final cut length of the bloom as well as calculation of average bloom temperature.

대한해협 저층해류의 관측 (Observations of Bottom Currents in the Korea Strait)

  • A steady, strong southward flow was observed in the lower layer beneath the Tsushima Warm Current in the deepest trough of the Korea Strait. Known as the Korea Strait Bottom Cold Water (KSBCW), this bottom current had a mean velocity of 24 cm/s and temperatures below 8–10℃. The direction of the bottom current was highly stable due to the topographic effects of the elongated trough. To determine the path of the southward bottom current, ADCP (Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler) data from 14 stations between 1999 and 2005 were examined. Persistent southward flows with average speeds of 4–10 cm/s were observed at only three places to the north of the strait where the bottom depths were 100–124 m. The collected data suggest a possible course of the southward bottom current along the southeast Korean coast before entering the deep trough of the Strait.
