  • Instructional objectives clearly show what teachers should teach in the class and how they lead the class, focusing on a certain activity for their students in the class. Clear instructional objectives are a prerequisite for teachers to accomplish effectively their curriculum. The revised Bloom's taxonomy table of educational objectives has been introduced in 50 years since the publication of his original taxonomy table in 1956. Bloom's revised taxonomy table of educational objectives has two-dimensions, the "cognitive process" dimension and the "knowledge" dimension, and it classifies class objectives more elaborately and clearly. This study was designed to classify instructional objectives stated in elementary science guidebooks for teachers into Bloom's revised taxonomy table, and see how the objectives of elementary science classes were categorized by grade level and areas. In addition, this study examined how the objectives of elementary science classes by study area were classified into the new taxonomy table. This study classified 618 elementary science instructional objectives of third- to sixth-grade science guidebooks for teachers into Bloom's revised taxonomy table. The results showed that the objectives of elementary science classes emphasized disproportionately some of the knowledge and cognitive process dimensions. In the area of subjects while the percentages of factual knowledge were very high, those of meta-cognitive knowledge were low.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the self-perceptions of the elementary school students' on the affective, behavioral and cognitive domains in science class. To see if there are differences in students' perceptions according to grade levels, a self-perception questionnaire was applied to third and fifth grade students in Seoul, Korea. The major results of the study are as follows. First, the perception level of the affective domain was higher than that of the cognitive domain in third grade students. There was no significant difference in the self-perception level of the fifth grade students. Both third and fifth grade students perceived the greatest improvement in the cognitive domain through one year of science teaching. Second, in the life science class, the same tendency was also observed. The students in the third and fifth grade reported that cognitive domains were the most improved through the one-year life science class. Third, when the students' perceptions were compared by grades, the third grade students showed higher self-perception scores than fifth grade students. As the grade increased, the perception scores of the students' lowered. Based on these findings, implications for science education research and teaching and learning at school are discussed.

  • This study explores the types of epistemic emotions that elementary-school students experience in science classes and the cognitive appraisal factors that affect these emotions. Thirty-two fourth-grade students of an elementary school in Gyeonggi-do, South Korea, participated in 20 science periods and wrote emotional diaries at the end of each class. In addition, the researcher conducted follow-up interviews to investigate the types of cognitive appraisal factors that caused the students to experience specific epistemic emotions that were recorded in their emotional diaries. The emotional diaries and interview data were analyzed using the constant comparative method of qualitative analysis. As a result, it was found that students experienced various positive and negative epistemic emotions. In addition, the cognitive appraisal factors experienced by the students were categorized into curriculum knowledge, experimental materials, experimental content, students, teachers, themselves, and integrated factors. We discussed that students' epistemic emotions are constructed cognitively and socially and that students inevitably experience negative epistemic emotions during science classes.

  • This study analyzed the teacher's perception for influence of behavioral characteristics of scientifically-gifted students on general students in elementary school science class. To do this, we selected the eight elementary school teachers who were conducting the regular science classes including scientifically-gifted students belonging to the gifted education institutes in Seoul and conducted individual in-depth interviews. The analysis of the results reveal that the teachers mentioned seven behavioral characteristics of scientifically-gifted students in general elementary school science classes.: 'excellent in designing and performing experiments', 'playing a leading role in experiments', 'expressing their abundant prior knowledge frequently', 'attempting their tasks with curiosity and persistence', 'displaying scientific creativity', 'often asking scientific questions in detail', and 'expressing their opinions logically'. These behavioral characteristics of scientifically-gifted students had positive effects on general students, such as 'providing them with a successful experience in conducting experiments', 'improving understanding of science class contents', 'developing scientific thinking and reflective thinking', and 'improving their students' positive experiences about science'. However, the excessive learning-driven behaviors of scientifically-gifted students had negative effects on general students, such as 'limiting opportunities for general students to participate in classes', 'conducting passive exploration centered on results', and 'causing conflicts with general students'. Educational implications of these findings are discussed.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze elementary teachers' science class objectively and quantitatively using Mobile Eye Tracker. The mobile eye tracker is easy to wear in eyeglasses form. And experiments are collected in video form, so it is very useful for realizing objective data of teacher's class situation in real time. Participants in the study were 2 elementary teachers, and they are teaching sixth grade science in Seoul. Participants took a 40-minute class wearing a mobile eye tracker. Eye movements of participants were collected at 60 Hz, and the collected eye movement data were analyzed using SMI BeGaze 3.7. In this study, the area related to the class was set as the area of interest, we analyzed the visual occupancy of teachers. In addition, we analyzed the linguistic interaction between teacher and students. The results of the study are as follows. First, we analyze the visual occupancy of meaningful areas in teaching-learning activities by class stage. Second, the analysis of eye movements when teachers interacted with students showed that teacher A had a high percentage of students' faces, while teacher B had a high visual occupation in areas not related to classes. Third, the linguistic interaction of the participants were analyzed. Analysis areas include questions, attention-focused language, elementary science teaching terminology, daily interaction, humor, and unnecessary words. This study shows that it is possible to analyze elementary science class objectively and quantitatively through analysis of visual occupancy using mobile eye tracking. In addition, it is expected that teachers' visual attention in teaching activities can be used as an index to analyze the form of language interaction.
