An Effect of a Group Art Treatment Program on Isolated Children's Self-Concept and Adaptation to the School Life in Elementary School (집단미술치료프로그램이 초등학교 고립아동의 자아개념 및 학교생활적응에 미치는 효과)

  • This study aimed at examining an effect of a group art treatment program on isolated children's self-concept and adaptation to the school life in an elementary school. To achieve this goal, the two hypotheses were made. Hypothesis 1. Children in the experimental group that participated in the group art treatment program will show more improvement in self-concept than those in the control group. Hypothesis 2. Children in the experimental group that participated in the group art treatment program will show more improvement in the ability to adapt themselves to the school life than those in the control group. To test the hypotheses, the socio-emotional isolation test developed by Heo Seung-hi (1993) was carried out with 120 third-graders at K elementary school in Busan; then, 24 isolated children (12 boys and 12 girls) at the upper 25 percent level were randomly sampled and assigned to each of experimental and control groups. The five-stage art treatment program as a reconstruction of the prior study to meet the goal of this study was provided to children in the experimental group at the researcher's classroom after school for 13 sessions, two sessions per week. The self-concept test manufactured by Song In-seop (1996), the school life adaptation test developed by Lee Yeong-seon (1997), and the experimental group's school life drawing (KSD) were used to test an effect of the program. For data analysis, two methods, a quantitative analysis of two tests and a qualitative analysis of KSD, were used. The findings were as follows: After implementing the art treatment program with the experimental group, there was significant improvement in all areas. This study concluded that if a group art treatment program is applied to elementary school practice, it will help isolated children improve their self-concept and ability to adapt themselves to the school life.

A Study on the Relationship between Snack Sugar Intake and Dietary Diversity in Elementary School Students

  • In this study, sixth grade school children in the Guri area were surveyed via questionnaire regarding their sociodemographic characteristics, snacking patterns, and intakes of different food groups and sugared snacks. Students with employed mothers had more frequent snacking events and were more dependent on store-purchased snacks compared to those having an unemployed mother. A high consumption of snack sugar was associated with a higher dietary diversity score. There was a positive relationship between snack sugar intake and the intakes of meat and dairy products and foods in the oil and nut group, respectively. A high snack sugar intake had a negative effect on fruit intake. Specific nutrient intake data will be required before conclusions can be made on whether nutrient imbalances are a concern in elementary school children having sweet snacks. Yet, the current data indicate that an increased snack sugar intake can decrease fruit intake, which could result in certain nutrient deficits. Specific dietary guidance may be necessary to address the snacking habits of elementary school children.

Factors Associated with Breakfast Skipping in Elementary School Children in Korea (일부지역 초등학생 아침 결식과 식사 관련 요인 분석)

  • The objective of this study was to examine relationships between breakfast skipping and ecological factors related to eating practice. Participants were 537 children (male: 274, female: 263) from two elementary schools in Kyunggi-do (School A) and Seoul (School B). Analysis included cross-tabulation of demographics, factors related to eating practice and weight status, frequency of breakfast skipping and types of breakfast and the number of foods at breakfast by schools. Logistic regression were conducted to identify the factors associated with breakfast skipping. Children in school B showed higher socioeconomic status by living environment and the type of fathers' job than those in school A. Eighty six percent of children in school B and 75% in school A ate breakfast 5 times and more per week. School and father's occupation differences correlated with the frequency of breakfast, but not mother's employ status was not. After controlling school. type of father's job, mother's employ status, eating breakfast 5 times and more was associated with eating with other family members, feeling hungry before breakfast, normal weight status, eating Korean traditional meal type and number of food eaten at breakfast. The results stress the need for intervention programs aimed at decreased skipping breakfast among elementary school children. While programs need to reach all children skipping breakfast, approaches need to be suitable to in particular those from low socioeconomic backgrounds.

A Study of the Refractive Errors Comparition between City and Rural Elementary School Children (도시와 농촌지역 초등학생들의 굴절상태 비교에 관한 연구)

  • Purpose: This study was designed to be used as the basic visual function data after analyzing and investigating the refractive errors variation between city and rural elementary school children. Methods: To compare with city and rural areas, 2501 elementary school children who lived in Mokpo, Yeongam, Muan, Hampyeong were participated. Objective refraction, Subjective refraction and binocular function examinations were measured. Results: Mean of refractive error of rural areas was -1.47 D in 2012 years, -1.52 D in 2013 years, and -1.40 D in 2014 years. However average of refractive error was -1.65 D in 2012 years, -1.76 D in 2013 years and -1.75 D in 2014 years who lives in city areas. Average myopia was showed higher who lives in rural areas elementary school children than city areas elementary school children. There were significant differences between rural areas and city areas elementary school children (p = 0.03), but there were no significant differences by averagre hyperopia (p = 0.32). Average myopia was showed the tendency of increase as the students get older by analysis compare with rural and city areas elementary school children. It also showed high prevalence of myopia who lives in city areas elementary school children compare with lives in rural areas elementary school children. Conclusions: It is the very important to performed regular visual acuity test and correction during the largest refractive change period and it is necessary to have experts in the visual acuity test.

An Analysis of Outdoor Space in Elementary School Design based on the Possibility of Forming a Sense of Place for Children: With Focus on the Spatial Planning before the Occupation (아동의 장소성 구축가능성으로 본 초등학교시설의 외부공간계획 분석: 사용자 점유이전의 공간계획을 중심으로)

  • The sense of place at school environment becomes more important as children increasingly spend more time in school and children's attachment to the environment affects the cognition development of children. The goal of this research is to identify characteristics that enhance the sense of place for children in outdoor space and check the possibilities of forming it in the school environments. Through the analysis of design document and design report for schematic design of elementary school which is executed through Korean Institute of Educational Facilities between 2002-2005, 47cases from 32elementary schools are analyzed. As a result it is found that designers tend to orient towards the visual aspects compared to other invisible aspects such as thermal comfort and participation of children, which is extracted as a key characteristics of forming a sense of place for children. More attention is required to enhance the sense of place in school environment to support the child development in everyday space.

The Effects of Self-efficacy on Health Promotion Behavior in Obese Elementary School Children (초등학생 비만아동의 자기효능감이 건강증진행위에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of self-efficacy and health promotion behavior in obese elementary school children. Methods: The participants for this study were 280 students from seven elementary schools, located in Chonbuk Province. For data analysis, descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficients and simple linear regression were used with SPSS WIN ver 15.0 Program. Results: The mean scores for self-efficacy and health promotion behavior were $2.95{\pm}0.60$ and $2.99{\pm}0.39$ respectively. There were significant positive correlations between health promotion behavior and self-efficacy (r= .614, p<.001). The main predictor of health promoting behavior in obese elementary school children was self-efficacy, which explained 37.7%. Conclusion: The findings from this study indicate a need to develop nursing intervention programs to health promotion behavior in obese elementary school children including the promotion of self-efficacy.

Survey of Korean Elementary School Children's Extracurricular Activities (한국 초등학교 아동의 학교수업 외 활동 실태조사)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate Korean elementary school children's extracurricular activities by gender, grade and area from a sample of 3,608 children in six Korean provincial areas except Jeju-do. They responded to the questionnaire developed by the researchers. Data were analyzed by frequency and percent using the SPSS PC 15.0 program. Results were as follows: Firstly, 3,337 children(92.5%) participated in extracurricular activities, and the rest(7.5%) did not. This result illustrates that the majority of Korean elementary school children are taking part in at least one or more out-of-school activities. Secondly, the average number of extracurricular activities in which elementary school children participated was 8.48 and the average time allotted was 655.24 minutes; each child took about 8 activities and spent approximately 10 hours per week. Thirdly, main extracurricular activities in which children participated were to go to educational institutes, to take art/physical education lessons, and to study self-learning materials. Lastly, what elementary school children wish to do most in their spare time was to play the computer games, to take a rest, to enjoy family and friend relationships, and to watch the television.

A study on clothing weights of elementary school children in a hygienic perspective (초등학교 아동의 착의량에 관한 위생학적 연구)

  • This study was designed to find out clothing weights and clothing practice of elementary school children and their mothers and to investigate the correlation between clothing weights of the children and those of their mothers and to investigate the correlation between clothing weights and physical fitness of the children. RESULTS : 1. Total clothing weight of elementary school children was heavier than that of their mothers. 2. The results analyzed by sex and age of the children were as follows. Correlation was little recognized between lowerwear, underwear weights of the 6 year old girls and underwear weight of their mothers and between upperwear weight of 10 year old girls and underwear weight of their mothers. 3. In case of the children who made a clothing decision with their mothersm, correlation was recognized between total clothing weight of the children and total clothing, underwear, lowerwear weights of their mothers, and between upperwear weight of the children and upperwear weight of the children and upperwear, total clothing, underwear and outerwear weights of their mothers, and between outerwear weight of the children and lowerwear weight of their mothers. 4. Physical fitness had partly a negative correlation with the clothing weights in case of the boys, while not the girls. As a reslult, clothing weights of elementary school children were related to thermal sensation of their mothers.

Effects of Self-Efficacy Promotion Program on Obesity in Elementary School Children (초등학생을 대상으로 한 자기효능감 증진 비만관리 프로그램의 효과 분석)

  • Purpose : The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a self-efficacy promotion program on obesity in elementary school students. Methods : Forty five obese children from a elementary school were select for an experimental group and 53 obese children from another elementary school were chosen for the control group. Both schools located in Kimpo area. Obesity was defined as children whose age-specific BMI was 85th percentile or higher. Pre and post test were conducted to examine the effects of the self-efficacy promotion program. Chi-square test, t-test, paired t-test were used for analyses. SPSS 10.0 was used. Results : The decrease of BMI was significantly greater in the experimental group than the control group. Students' knowledge about obesity was significantly increased in the experimental group compared to the control group. Self-efficacy score was significantly increased in the experimental group. In addition, self-care behavior score was significantly increased in the experimental group. Therefore, the experimental group showed significant improvement in their knowledge, self-efficacy and self-care behavior compared to the control group. Conclusion : The results of this study suggest that self-efficacy promotion programs may have significant effects on the management of obesity in elementary school children. Thus, the results strengthen further research to develop effective intervention programs focusing on self-efficacy for obesity in elementary school children.

A Study on the Perceptions of Teachers on the Implementation of the Ordinance for Guaranteeing Right to Play and the Practice of Play: Focusing on the Ordinance of the Jeollanam-do Office of Education (놀 권리 보장조례의 이행과 놀이 실행에 관한 교사의 인식 연구: 전라남도 교육청 조례를 중심으로)

  • Objective: The purpose of this study is to examine whether the 'Ordinance for Guaranteeing Children's Right to Play' is has been implemented well and investigate play practice in elementary school. Methods: For this study, a survey was conducted on 319 elementary school teachers in Jeollanam-do. Results: First, elementary school teachers' perception of the enactment of the 'Ordinance on Children's Right to Play' is high. And their perception is positive about the effect of the 'Ordinance on Children's Right to Play'. Second, among the roles of the Office of Education, play-related training and club support were relatively low. The role of the elementary school director was relatively low in the analysis and disclosure of play performance. Third, the time that children mainly play in school is the middle play time. The sufficiency and safety of play spaces differed by region. Fourth, the contents to be added to the 'Ordinance' are securing play space, budget support, and mandatory play time. Conclusion/Implications: In the future, 'Ordinance on Children's Right to Play' should go through a process of improvement so that children's play is realized as a right.
