  • Numerical simulation of fluid flow with moving free surface has been carried out. For the free surface flow, a VOF(Volume of Fluid)-based algorithm utilizing a fixed grid system has been investigated. In order to reduce numerical smearing at the free surface represented on a fixed grid system, a new free surface tracking algorithm based on the donor-acceptor scheme has been presented. Novel features of the proposed algorithm are characterized as two numerical tools; the orientation vector to represent the free surface orientation in each cell and the baby-cell to determine the fluid volume flux at each cell boundary. The proposed algorithm can be easily implemented in any irregular non-uniform grid systems that are usual in finite element method (FEM). Moreover, the proposed algorithm can be extended and applied to the 3-D free surface flow problem without additional efforts. For computation of unsteady incompressible flow, a finite element approximation based on the explicit fractional step method has been adopted. In addition, the SUPG(streamline upwind/Petrov-Galerkin) method has been implemented to deal with convection dominated flows. Combination of the proposed free surface tracking scheme and explicit fractional step formulation resulted in an efficient solution algorithm. Validity of the present solution algorithm was demonstrated from its application to the broken dam and the solitary wave propagation problems.

  • In this paper, the meshless local Petrov-Galerkin (MLPG) method is developed for dynamic analysis of non-symmetric nanocomposite cylindrical shell equations of elastic wave motion with nonlinear grading patterns under shock loading. The mechanical properties of the nanocomposite cylinder are obtained based on a micro-mechanical model. In this study, four kinds of grading patterns are assumed for carbon nanotube mechanical properties. The displacements can be approximated using shape function so, the multiquadrics (MQ) Radial Basis Functions (RBF) are used as the shape function. In order to discretize the derived equations in time domains, the Newmark time approximation scheme with suitable time step is used. To demonstrate the accuracy of the present method for dynamic analysis, at the first a problem verifies with analytical solution and then the present method compares with the finite element method (FEM), finally, the present method verifies by using the element free Galerkin (EFG) method. The comparison shows the high capacity and accuracy of the present method in the dynamic analysis of cylindrical shells. The capability of the present method to dynamic analysis of non-symmetric nanocomposite cylindrical shell is demonstrated by dynamic analysis of the cylinder with different kinds of grading patterns and angle of nanocomposite reinforcements. The present method shows high accuracy, efficiency and capability to dynamic analysis of non-symmetric nanocomposite cylindrical shell, which it furnishes a ground for a more flexible design.

  • In this paper, an improved Element-Free Galerkin (EFG) method is proposed by adding enrichment function to the standard EFG approximation and a discontinuity function is implemented in constructing the shape function across the crack surface. In this method, the singularity and the discontinuity of the crack are efficiently modeled by using initial node distribution to evaluate reliable stress intensity factor, though the standard EFG method requires placing additional nodes near the crack tip. The proposed method enables the initial node distribution to be kept without any additional nodal d.o.f. and expresses the asymptotic stress field near the crack tip successfully. Numerical example verifies the improvement and the effectiveness of the method.

  • In meshless methods some techniques to impose essential boundary conditions have been developed since the approximations do not satisfy Kronecker delta properties at nodal points. In this study, new scheme for imposing essential boundary conditions is developed. Weight functions are modified by multiplying with auxiliary weight functions and the resulting shape functions satisfy Kronecker delta property on the bound ary nodes. In addition, the resulting shape functions possess and interpolation features on the boundary segments where essential boundary conditions are prescribed. Therefore the essential boundary conditions can be exactly satisfied with the new method. More importantly, the impositions of essential boundary conditions using the present method is relatively easy as in finite element method. Numerical examples show that the method also retains high convergence rate comparable to Lagrange multiplier method.

  • A crack model for the fracture in concrete based on meshless method is proposed in this paper. The cracks in concrete are classified into micro-cracks or macro-cracks respectively according to their widths, and different numerical approaches are adopted for them. The micro-cracks are represented with smeared crack approach whilst the macro-cracks are represented with discrete cracks that are made up with additional nodes and boundaries. The widely used meshless method, Element-free Galerkin method, is adopted instead of finite element method to model the concrete, so that the discrete crack approach is easier to be implemented with the convenience of arranging node distribution in the meshless method. Rotating-Crack-Model is proved to be preferred over Fixed-Crack-Model for the smeared cracks of this composite crack model due to its better performance on mesh bias. Numerical examples show that this composite crack model can take advantage of the positive characteristics in the smeared and discrete approaches, and overcome some of their disadvantages.

  • Previously, an improved crack analysis technique based on Element-Free Galerkin Method (EFGM) which includes a discontinuity function and a singular basis function was presented. The technique needs neither addition of nodes nor modification of the model, but it shows some dependency on the formulation and modeling parameters such as the class of weight function, the size of compact support, dilation parameter and the range controlled by the singular basis function. For those parameters, a parametric study was performed on the calculation of a discrete error and then, a guideline for the choice of adequate parameters in the technique was proposed.

  • There is a big issue to generate 3D hexahedral finite element (FE) model, since a process to divide the whole domain into several simple-shaped sub-domains is required before generating a continuous mesh with mapped mesh generators. In general, it is nearly impossible to set up proper division numbers interactively to keep mesh connectivity between sub-domains on a complicated arbitrary-shaped domain. If mesh continuity between sub-domains is not required in an analysis, this complicated process can be omitted. Element-free Galerkin method (EFGM) can accept discontinuous meshes, which only requires nodal information. However it is difficult to choose a reasonable influenced domain in moving least squares scheme with non-uniformly distributed nodes in discontinuous FE models. A new FE scheme fur discontinuous mesh is proposed in this paper by applying improved EFGM with some modification to derive FE approximated function in discontinuous parts. Its validity is evaluated on linear elastic problems.

  • The fluid flow and heat transfer in a thin liquid film are investigated numerically. The flow Is assumed to be two-dimensional laminar and surface tension is considered. The most important characteristics of this flow is the existence of a hydraulic jump through which the flow undergoes very sharp and discontinuous change. Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian(ALE) method is used to describe moving free boundary and a modified SIMPLE algorithm based on streamline upwind Petrov-Galerkin(SUPG) finite element method is used for time marching iterative solution. The numerical results obtained by solving unsteady full Navier-Stokes equations are presented for planar and radial flows subject to constant wall temperature or constant wall heat flux, and compared with available experimental data. It Is discussed systematically how the inlet Reynolds and Froude numbers and surface tension affect the formation of a hydraulic jump. In particular, the effect of temperature dependent fluid properties is also discussed.

  • This paper presents an efficient meshless method for analyzing cracked piezoelectric structures subjected to mechanical and electrical loading. The method employs an element free Galerkin (EFG) formulation and an enriched basic function as well as special shape functions that contain discontinuous derivatives. Based on the moving least squares (MLS) interpolation approach, The EFG method is one of the promising methods for dealing with problems involving progressive crack growth. Since the method is meshless and no element connectivity data are needed, the burdensome remeshing procedure required in the conventional finite element method (FEM) is avoided. The numerical results show that the proposed method yields an accurate near-tip stress field in an infinite piezoelectric plate containing an interior hole. Another example is to study a ceramic multilayer actuator. The proposed model was found to be accurate in the simulation of stress and electric field concentrations due to the abrupt end of an internal electrode.
