  • In this paper, we surveyed previous cases, network protocols (such as Wi-Fi, Zigbee, Z-wave, and WirelessHart) and propagation characteristics on the application of maintaining equipments for instrumentation and control (I&C) using wireless communication techniques inside the nuclear power plant (NPP). In addition, we compared and analyzed the difference of detailed regulations with respect to the electromagnetic interference (EMI) and radio frequency interference (RFI) in the Regulatory Guide 1.180 rev. 1 (RG. 1.180) for adopting the wireless communication techniques inside the NPP, and other regulations, such as MIL-STD 461E and IEC 61000-4, that are recognized in the KINS/RG-N03.09 (Rev. 2). Furthermore, we investigated evaluating factors about electromagnetic properties by considering indoor environments, wave scattering, shielding effectiveness, and the indoor wave attenuation model that were not included in the current electromagnetic compatibility regulation.

  • To investigate the effect of the oxyfluorination of carbon nanotubes (OF-CNTs) on electroless Ni deposition and electromagnetic interference shielding efficiency (EMI SE), CNTs were treated with a mixture of oxygen and fluorine gases and sequentially deposited with nickel. These samples were then manufactured into thin films on a polyimide film to evaluate their EMI SE. The surface chemical property of OF-CNTs was investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. From the results of thermogravimetric and scanning electron microscopic analyses, it was found that both the amount of deposited Ni and the surface morphology changed depending on oxyfluorination. Moreover, the Ni-deposited CNTs pretreated with $O_2:F_2=1:9vol%$ exhibited the maximum EMI SE as approximately 19.4 dB at 1 GHz. These results were attributed to the formation of oxygen and fluorine functional groups on the surface of CNTs due to the oxyfluorination, and the functional groups enabled to deposit a suitable amount of Ni and improve the dispersion in the deposited solution.

  • The effect of a multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) dispersion on the electrical, morphological and rheological properties of polycarbonate (PC)/MWCNT composites was investigated, with and without pretreating the MWCNTs with hydrogen peroxide oxidation and lyophilization. The resulting PC/treated MWCNT composites showed higher electrical conductivity than the PC/untreated MWCNT composites. The morphological behavior indicated the treated composites to have greater dispersion of MWCNTs in the PC matrix. In addition, the electromagnetic interference shielding efficiency (EMI SE) of the treated composites was higher than that of the untreated ones. Rheological studies of the composites showed that the complex viscosity of the treated composites was higher than the untreated ones due to increased dispersion of the MWCNTs in the PC matrix, which is consistent with the electrical conductivity, EMI SE and morphological studies of the treated composites. The latter results suggested that the increased electrical conductivity and EMI SE of the treated composites were mainly due to the increased dispersion of MWCNTs in the PC matrix.

  • Ti3C2TX MXene, first reported by Naguib et al. in 2011, has attracted tremendous attention due to its excellent hydrophilicity, electrical conductivity, and mechanical/chemical stability. Since MXene is a two-dimensional material with a thickness of few nanometers, which ensure its flexibility. In last few years, due to these properties many researchers used Ti3C2TX MXene into various fields such as flexible smart sensors, energy harvesting/storage devices, supercapacitors and electromagnetic interference shielding systems. In this review article, we have briefly discussed the various synthesis processes and characteristics of Ti3C2TX MXene. Moreover, we reviewed the latest development of Ti3C2TX MXene as flexible electrode material to be used into different applications.

  • In this paper, improvement measures were studied for false alarm (abnormal lighting) of emergency hydraulic warning light due to RF radiation signals in aircraft. When the warning lamp of the emergency hydraulic system is lit during flight due to electromagnetic interference caused by RF radiation signals, it affects flight mission and safety which can result in efficiency degradation and maintenance of flight mission. For false alarm of emergency hydraulic warning light, root cause analysis and troubleshooting were carried out. By shielding a composite strip under fuselage of the aircraft located in the path of the RF radiation signal, the RF radiation signal flowing into the emergency hydraulic indicator was blocked. Results of applying the improvement method through ground and flight monitoring were also described.

  • We investigated the effect of polymer sublayer on volumetric resistivity and tensile strength of carbon fiber (CF)/polyethylene composite films fabricated under high intensity electric fields. The dependence of volumetric resistivity and tensile strength of the films on the polymer sublayer thickness or mass part exhibited complex behavior according to CF content and CF layer density in the films. As the thickness of polymer sublayer increases, two groups of processes at thermo-mechanical forming stage would take effects in the properties of the films. The first group comprises the increase of polymer layer thickness having reduced CF content compared with central or upper part of the film and insufficient wetting of CF resulting in the loosened structure near upper film side. The second group, on the other hand, is the improvement of mobility of molten sublayer leading to better distribution of CF throughout the film thickness and the formation of more compact structure. The different degree of contribution of these two competing processes at varied CF content and CF layer density could explain complex dependence of the film properties on the polymer sublayer. These results are important to optimize the electrical and mechanical properties of highly conductive polymer films, which can be used as electromagnetic interference shielding materials.

  • Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are used in various composite materials to enhance electrical, thermal and mechanical properties of composite materials. In this study, we investigate the wear characteristics of polycarbonate/acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (PC/ABS) blends containing multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). PC/ABS blends are commonly used in many industrial applications such as cellular phones and display cases and MWCNTs have been added to the PC/ABS blends to improve their electromagnetic interference shielding (EMS). We performed wear tests on PC/ABS blends containing MWCNTs under reciprocating linear sliding conditions with chrome steel balls as a counterpart material. The normal loads were 10, 30, 50, 70, 100 N, the sliding speed was 10 mm/s, the stroke length was 15 mm, and the tests lasted 900 s. The MWCNTs included in the PC/ABS blends lower the wear volume and friction coefficient of the composites. We analyzed the wear debris collected from the composites during the tests in terms of the MWCNT concentration using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy. The results show that the quantity of MWCNTs in the debris is proportional to the concentration of MWCNTs in the composite, indicating that the exposure of the MWCNTs to environments by wear could be increased with their concentration in the composite.
