  • The influence of the plastic flow rules on the elasto-plastic behaviour of a discrete joint element was investigated by performing the numerical direct shear tests under both constant normal displacement and normal displacement conditions. The finite interface elements obeying Plesha’s joint constitutive law was used to allow the relative motion of the rock blocks on the joint surface. Realistic results were obtained in the tests adopting the non-associated flow rule, while the associated flow rule overestimated the joint dilation. To overcome the computational drawbacks coming from the non-symmetric element stiffness matrix in the conventional non-associated plasticity, the symmetric formulation of the tangential stiffness matrix for a non-associated joint element was proposed. The symmetric elasto-plastic matrix it derived by assuming an imaginary equivalent joint with associated flow rule which shows the same plastic response as that of original Joint with non-associated flow rule. The validity of the formulation was confirmed through the numerical direct shear tests under constant normal stress condition.

  • Using several soil parameters which are obtained from the PI-experimental formulas and the back analysis method, the elastic analysis, the elasto-plastic analysis and the elasto-viscoplastic analysis for soil deformation are executed. Comparing the results with those of consolidation test, the indirect estimation method for soil parameters and the suitability of constitutive models are studied. The elastic analysis using back analysis result and the elasto-plastic analysis using the perconsolidation test. The elasto-viscoplastic analysis disagrees with the results of meability coefficient obtained from back analysis are the nearest to the results of the consolidation test. It is inferred that elasto-viscoplastic model is not adequate to the soil of which plasticity index is low.

  • The goal of this paper is to understand the stress-transfer mechanism of concrete-filled tubular column to H-beam connection with external T stiffener through the elasto-plastic finite element method and to offer basic data for the design of T stiffener. For the accuracy, analysis results are compared with experimental results. It makes use of several stress and strain indices to understand the stress-transfer mechanism of connection. An alternative plan that decreases the stress concentration of beam flange to horizontal stiffener connection is proposed through the elasto-plastic finite element method.

  • The paper presents results of FE simulations of the strain-rate sensitive concrete behaviour under dynamic loading at the macroscopic level. To take the loading velocity effect into account, viscosity, stress modifications and inertial effects were included into a rate-independent elasto-plastic formulation. In addition, a decrease of the material stiffness was considered for a very high loading velocity to simulate fragmentation. In order to ensure the mesh-independence and to properly reproduce strain localization in the entire range of loading velocities, a constitutive formulation was enhanced by a characteristic length of micro-structure using a non-local theory. Numerical results were compared with corresponding laboratory tests and available analytical formulae.

  • The objective of this study is to investigate the behavior of Visco-Elasto-Plastic materials of Silicate Grouted Sands due to external load. Uniaxial compression strength of silicate grouted sands was increased accordingly with curing time, but it was almost unchanged after 7days. A series of uniaxial compression creep tests were peformed for $\sigma$/$\sigma$$\sub$f/ = 8%,16% and 24%. The tested Silicated Grouted Sands exhibits three types of strains : elastic, plastic, viscoelastic. It is seen that the magnitude of the instantaneous recoverable strains $\varepsilon$$\sub$r/(o) is approximately independent of the unloading time. In this tests, The total creep strains( elastic, plastic, viscoelastic) are proportional to the stress level. Based on the constant creep test results, relationships between the time and the creep compliance are developed.

  • Based on the close investigation of Lade elasto -plastic model, this study proposes a new elasto -plastic constitutive model for foundation composed of granular soils. The new model contains 1st stress invariant in plastic potential function as well as yield function, which is different from Lade original model. Both these functions called a correction function include a correction term. To validate the new analytical model, it was compered with some previous models. Comparison between the test results and numerical results using Lade and new model was carried out concerning Sacramento River sand, U.S.A and Backma River sand. The conclusion was obtained that more refined model well be deft.eloped throughout this research.

  • In this paper, a multilaminate based model have been developed and presented to predict the strain hardening behavior of rock. In this multilaminate model, the stress-strain behavior of a material is obtained by integrating the mechanical response of an infinite number of predefined oriented planes passing through a material point. Essential features such as the variable deformations hypothesis and multilaminate model are discussed. The methodology to be discussed here is modeling of strains on the 13 laminates passing through a point in each loading step. Upon the presented methodology, more attention has been given to hardening in non-linear behaviour of rock in going from the peak to residual strengths. The predictions of the derived stress-strain model are compared to experimental results for marble, sandstone and dense Cambria sand. The comparisons demonstrate the ability of this model to reproduce accurately the mechanical behavior of rocks.

  • This paper presents applications of the objective stress rates to stress update algorithms for transient shell dynamic analysis within the context of explicit time integration. The hypo elasto-plastic materials are assumed in establishing constitutive equations. The derivation of the objective stress rates are investigated by use of the Lie derivative. Comparison results are given between the Kirchhoff and Cauchy stress formulation. The Jacobian determination algorithm proposed in this paper is presented in association with the Belytschko-Lin-Tsay shell theory. Several numerical examples are demonstrated including contact and non-contact examples, by which proposed algorithms are compared with respect to the accuracy and effectiveness.

  • The BEM, known as solving boundary value problems, could have some advantages In solving domain problems which are mostly solved by FEM and FDM. Lately, in the elastic-plastic nonlinear problems, BEM could provide the subdomain approach for the region where the plastic deformation could occur and the unknown nodal displacement of this region are added as the unknown of the boundary integral equation for this approach. In this paper, initial stress method was used to establish the formulation of such BEM approach. And a simple rectangular plate having a circular hole was analyzed to verify the suggested method and the result is compared with that from FEM. It is shown that the result of two methods are showing similar stress-strain curves at the root of perforated plate and furthermore the plastic deformation obtained by BEM shows more reasonable behavior than that of FEM.

  • There have been many studies on the two dimensional thermo-elasto-plastic analysis in welding process, mostly from viewpoint of residual stresses. In this study, the temperature distribution, transient thermal stress, and angular distortion during bead-on-plate gas metal arc welding of rectangular plates were analyzed by using the finite element method. A nonlinear heat transfer analysis was first performed by taking account of the temperature-dependent material properties and convection heat losses on the surface. This was followed by a thermo-elasto-plastic stresses and distortion analysis that incorporates the constrained boundary condition of the two dimensional solution domain to get the three dimensional size effect of the plate. The constrained boundary conditions adopted in this study were the constant displacement condition over the whole two dimensional section for axial movement in the welding direction, and the force boundary condition for rotational movementof the domain around the axis of the welding direction. It could be revealed that the theoretical predictions of the angular distortion have an improved agreement with the experimentally obtained data presented in the previous study.
