  • This paper describes a dynamic fracture behaviors of structural elements under elastic or elasto-plastic stress waves in two dimensional space. The governing equation of this problem has the type of hyperbolic partial differential equation, which consists of the equation of motions and incremental elasto-plastic constitutive equations. To solve this problem we introduce Zwas' method which is based on the finite difference method. Additionally, in order to deal with the dynamic behavior of elasto-plastic problems, an elasto-plastic loading path in the stress space is proposed to model the plastic yield phenomenon. Based on the result of this computation, the dynamic stress intensity factor at the crack tip of an elastic material is calculated, and the time history of a plastic zone of a elasto-plastic material is to be shown.

  • In this study a computer program is developed for analyzing the elasto-plastic dynamic behaviors of the plate subjected to line-loading by a low-velocity impactor. The equilibrium equation associated with the Hertzian contact law is formulated to evaluate the transient dynamic behaviour of the impacted plate. Compared with an elastic analysis, the effects of material plasticity are presented. Consequently, in the case of elasto-plastic analysys, impulse decreases, displacements increase and contact time duration is longer than the elastic case for same finite element model. And the time variation of the impacting load is not significant due to the plasticity except at the beginning of impact duration, and the induced stresses of the plate are more realistic.

  • This paper presents the theoretical model to investigate the effect of Coulomb damping in the sub-structure of a foil bearing. Foil deflection is restricted by friction of bumps. Equivalent viscous damping of the bump foils is derived from the Coulomb friction. Dynamic equation of the bumps is constituted by stiffness and damping terms. This point give the difference from Heshmat's frictionless and simple compliance bump model. The fluid is modeled with the compressible Reynolds equation. A perturbation approach is used to determine the static and dynamic performance of the bearing from the coupled fluid-structural model. The analysis result shows that the static and dynamic performance is enhanced by bump friction. This analysis technique would be extended to development of a high performance bearing.

  • The thermohydrodynamic analysis of tilting pad thrust bearing is studied with the consideration of elastic effect of pad. Reynolds equation, deflection equation and energy equation are solved simultaneously with the boundary conditions. Reynolds equation is modified as the approximate form. Pads are supported by the line pivot and the point pivot respectively. Pads are considered as the flat planes. Effects of pad thickness on the performance of thrust bearing are emphasized and the performances of rigid pad and elastic pad are compared. Effects of inlet temperature on performances of the bearing are compared. Dynamic characteristics of both pad supported by line and point pivot are compared.

  • Stability of a cylindrical shell subject to a uniform axial compression, which is a power function of time, is examined within the framework of small strain elasto-plasticity. The material of the shell is incompressible and the effect of the elastic unloading is considered. Initially, employing the infinitesimal elastic-plastic deformation theory, the fundamental relations and Donnell type stability equations for a cylindrical shell have been obtained. Then, employing Galerkin's method, those equations have been reduced to a time dependent differential equation with variable coefficient. Finally, for two initial conditions applying a Ritz type variational method, the critical static and dynamic axial loads, the corresponding wave numbers and dynamic factor have been found. Using those results, the effects of the variations of loading parameters and the variations of power of time in the axial load expression as well as the variations of the radius to thickness ratio on the critical parameters of the shells for two initial conditions are also elucidated. Comparing results with those in the literature validates the present analysis.

  • To operate a flexible mechanism in high speed its weight must be reduced as far as the structural strength does not decrease too much, but a light-weighted mechanism causes undesirable elastodynamic responses deteriorating the system performance. Besides, clearance within the connections of mechanisms causes rapid wear, increased noise and vibration. Even if the problems described above must be considered in the initial design stage, there has been no effective design process which takes account of the correlation between dynamic characteristics of flexible mechanism and the clearance effect at the joint. In this study, the generalized elastodynamic governing equations which include dynamic characteristics and boundary conditions of flexible mechanism are derived by variational calculus and solved by using FFM theory. To take the clearance effect at joint into account a new dynamic model is presented and also the method of modified stiffness/damping matrix is proposed to activate the dynamic clearance model, which cooperates with the developed governing equation very easily. As the results of this study, the proposed method(modified stiffness/damping matrix) to calculate clearance effect was proved to be superior to the existing one(force reaction method) in solution convergency and calculation performance. Besides this method can be easily adopted to the complex shape joint without calculation of reaction force direction.

  • This paper presents applications of the objective stress rates to stress update algorithms for transient shell dynamic analysis within the context of explicit time integration. The hypo elasto-plastic materials are assumed in establishing constitutive equations. The derivation of the objective stress rates are investigated by use of the Lie derivative. Comparison results are given between the Kirchhoff and Cauchy stress formulation. The Jacobian determination algorithm proposed in this paper is presented in association with the Belytschko-Lin-Tsay shell theory. Several numerical examples are demonstrated including contact and non-contact examples, by which proposed algorithms are compared with respect to the accuracy and effectiveness.

  • In this a set of constitutive equation relevant to the analysis of thermo-elasto-plastic materials with phase transformation during quenching process was presented on the basis of continuum thermo-dynamic. In calculating the transient thermal stresses, temperature between coolant and specimen(SM45C) surface was determined from the heat transfer coefficient. A calculation was made for specimen with 40mm in diameter quenched in coolant from $820^{\circ}C$ and the results are as follow. Stresses at starting point of transformation always show the maximum tensile value. Reverse of stresses takes place after completion of transformation of inner part at specimen.

  • Analysis of elasto-dynamic deformation of flexible linkage mechanism is conducted using the finite element method. The equations of motion of the system are derived from the static structural problem in which dynamic inertia, gravitational and driving forces are treated as external loads. Linear spring model is included in the formulation of equation of motions to represent the effects of deformation of elastic bearings of revolute joints on the system behavior. A computer program is constructed and applied to analyze a specific crank-lever 4-bar mechanism. The algorithm of the program is as follows. First, the natural frequencies and the mode shapes of the system are calculated by solving the eigenproblem of the mechanism system which can be considered as a static structure by assuming the input shaft (crank shaft) to be fixed at any given configuration of mechanism. And finally, the elasto-dynamic deformation of the whole system is obtained using mode superposition method for the case of constant input speed. The effect of geometric stiffness on the mechamism is included in the program with the axial forces of links obtained through the quasi-static displacement analysis. It is found that the geometric stiffness exerts an important effect upon the elasto-dynamic behavior of the flexible linkage mechanism. Elastic deformation of bearing lowers the natural frequencies of the system, resulting smaller elastic displacement at the mid-point of the links and bigger elestic displacement at the ends of the links than rigid bearing. The above investigation of flexible linkage mechanism shows that the effects of the elastic deformation of bearing on the mechanism should be considered to design the mechanism which satisfies more preciously the purpose and the condition of design.
