  • Embracing the important roles of presence, this study focused on exploring how to enhance online learners' learning engagement and learning achievement in distance higher education settings. More specifically, this study examined the structural relationships among university students' teaching presence, social presence, learning engagement, and perceived learning achievement in online learning environments using structural equation modeling. Data were collected from 206 university students enrolled in online courses in the second semester of 2020 at two large universities. According to the results of the data analysis, there was a significant relationship between teaching and social presence. Teaching presence and social presence predicted learning engagement that positively affected perceived learning achievement. Teaching presence was strongly associated with perceived learning achievement while social presence had a negative impact on that. Additionally, learning engagement had a mediating effect on the relationship between teaching presence and perceived learning achievement. This study found that students who perceived higher levels of teaching and social presences tend to more engage in learning, leading to perceiving better learning achievement. The findings suggest that the design, development, and implementation of effective online instruction should be needed to promote learning engagement, which can be linked to enhancing students' learning achievement. Implications and discussion are addressed in this article.

  • The characteristics of the pseudo-conceptual or the pseudo-analytical behaviors according to the achievement level(i.e. advanced group, proficient group, basic group, and below-basic group) in grade 9 are as follows. The pseudo-conceptual or pseudo-analytical behaviors to get credit from teachers become conspicuous in lower achievement level. The high achieving students showed more pseudo-conceptual or pseudo-analytical behaviors without undergoing the process of reflection or control. The proficient group was short of control in computation, and the advanced group didn't control well in representation. The proficient group tended to depend on a past successful algorithm and behave habitually. Therefore, it is needed to teach mathematics according to the characteristic of pseudo-conceptual or pseudo-analytic behaviors shown in each achievement level.

  • Recently in South Korea, various methods are followed in decreasing educational gap between region and social classes through school education. The National Assessment Educational Achievement(NAEA) intends to strengthen responsibility of school education and manage quality of curriculum. Besides, the NAEA intends to bridge achievement gap which is one of educational gaps by grasping the characteristics of academic ability to guarantee basic academic ability. There is not much research about the educational gap among regional scales. Therefore in this study, to examine the achievement characteristics among regional scales closely, we analyse the 2010, 2011 NAEA results in elementary mathematics subject and explore characteristics of items which have sharp differences between local population sizes. The results of the analysis has been showed that the educational gap between 'big-sized cities' and 'small and midium-sized cities' has been increased, but the overall educational gap among regional scales has been decreased.

  • This study analyzed the polarization of software education by analyzing the relationship between the average monthly total private education expenditure, software education expenditure, and academic achievement. For this purpose, data were collected and analyzed by surveying 2,780 parents of elementary school children nationwide. The results of this study are as follows: First, there was a statistically significant difference in children's academic achievement depending on whether or not they participated in software education. Second, the higher the children's academic achievement, the higher the percentage of participation in software private education expenditure. Third, there was a significant positive correlation between total private education expenditure and software-related private education expenditure. Fourth, although not statistically significant, there was a positive correlation between software private education expenses and academic achievement. In this study, software education provided by public education is not sufficient. For this reason, participation in private education and the amount of expenditure are increasing, and there is a gap in improving the main competencies of students according to household income.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the emotion effects on academic achievement for university students. The results are as follows. Resulting on the each emotions difference by the statistical variables, anxiety scores by gender showed a significant difference in the p<.01 level(F=7.685). The males anxiety(2.478, standard deviation: 0.180) had significantly lower scores than females(3.076, standard deviation: 0.168). But fear, anger, activity, and sociability scores were not significantly different respectively between male and female students. To see the emotions effect of academic achievement, the analysis method of the linear regression line was used. As the result, anxiety, fear, anger, activity, and sociability did not significantly influence academic achievement. And so unlike previous methods, the analysis method of the quadratic regression curve was used. As the result, anxiety, fear, anger, activity, and sociability showed did significantly influence academic achievement respectively within 5% of statistical significance level, to more than F=3.06. Therefore, the values on academic achievement of the each anxiety, fear, anger, activity, and sociability showed a quadratic regression curve. That is, [Academic achievement]=$-0.9685{\times}[Anxiety]^2+5.1342{\times}[Anxiety]+8.2679$,[Academic achievement]=$-1.0638{\times}[Fear]^2+5.5694{\times}[Fear]+7.5635$,[Academic achievement]=$-1.3497{\times}[Anger]^2+9.1284{\times}[Anger]+0.6720$,[Academic achievement]=$-1.0589{\times}[Activity]^2+7.4386{\times}[Activity]+1.8272$,[Academic achievement]=$-1.6830{\times}[Sociability]^2+11.2325{\times}[Sociability]-3.8258$. Therefore, we were able to determine the following conclusions. First, we were able to predict the degree of academic achievement by the each emotions scale. Second, when the each emotion scores of students was a moderate, the academic achievement was most excellent. So, in order for the students to become higher academic achievement, the maintenance of medium degree of the each emotions scores is required.
