  • This study discusses spatial distribution of the silver towns in the Seoul metropolitan area and investigates how the residents recognize their silver towns through in-depth interviews. Nowadays there are many elders who prefer to live in urban downtown or suburb areas which can be connected with the places of their pre-retirement lives. Therefore, the silver towns in the Seoul metropolitan area have been increasing. The facilities are mainly located in northern part of Seoul and southern part of Gyeonggi province near the network of major express roads. Location and accessibility are more important than any other factors when the elderly contemplate moving into silver town. Silver town residents are likely to have meaningful times and positive identities by communicating with friends there. The elders aged 80 years or older living in silver towns think the silver towns as their home while 'young old' people complain their limited rights of decision making and they consider additional move.

  • In the city of high population density crowded with buildings, Urban Heat Island (UHI) is intensified, and the city is vulnerable to thermal comfort. The maintenance of vacant land in downtown is treated as a factor that undermines the residential environment, spoils the urban landscape, and decreases the economic vitality of the whole region. Therefore, this study compared the effects on microclimate in the surrounding area according to the development scenarios targeting the vacant land in Songhyeon-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul. The status quo, green oriented, building oriented and green-building mediation scenarios were established and ENVI-met was used to compare and analyze the impact of changes in wind speed, air temperature and mean radiant temperature (MRT) within 1 km of the target and the target site. The result of inside and 1 km radius the targeted area showed that the seasonal average temperature decreased and the wind speed increased when the green oriented scenario was compared with the current state one. It was expected that the temperature lowered to -0.73 ℃ or increased to 1.5 ℃ in summer, and the wind speed was affected up to 210 meters depending on the scenario. And it was revealed that green area inside the site generally affects inside area, but the layout and size of the buildings affect either internal and external area. This study is expected to help as a decision-making support tool for developing Songhyeon-dong area and to be used to reflect the part related to microclimate on the future environmental effects evaluation system.

  • Conservation treatment of stone cultural properties in the open air is mainly conducted by companies specialized in conservation treatment. This study presents cases of conservation treatment of stone cultural properties housed outdoors in Seoul, including the Three-story Stone Pagoda at Nakseongdae in Gwanak-gu. The present condition of and damage to stone cultural properties are investigated and the materials and techniques used for conservation treatment are presented. The contamination on the surface of stone cultural properties located in downtown areas shows features specific to the related areas, meaning each case requires tailored conservation techniques. This study is expected to serve as reference for future conservation treatment of stone cultural properties in Seoul as well as others in museum collections exhibited outdoors. It is hoped that the cases presented in this study can become widely known to people in charge of conservation treatment in the private and public sectors to improve the quality of conservation treatment applied to stone cultural properties.

  • The maintenance for the stability of tunnel, especially on downtown area, careful check must be considered during construction stage and after. Moreover we have to achieve the stability of tunnel by ground improvement and reinforcement when ground condition is bad or tunnel failures under the various ground conditions. In this paper, it is presented the case of tunnel failure and the state of restoration by ground reinforcements at seoul subway $\bigcirc$-$\bigcirc$ construction site. For the purpose of ground reinforcement, first, curtain wall was established by chemical grouting. Secondly, cement milk grouting was carried by upper part of tunnel crown. Also Boreholes loading test and tunnel monitoring were carried by in failure site for the long term stability of tunnel.

  • Choryang Waekwan was the biggest Japanese settlment to house the Japanese diplomatic mission and traders in Korea. Waekwan means Japanese Pavilion literally, but the reality of this Waekwan exceeded much the scale of single architecture. Since Choryang Waekwan was closed in the second half of the nineteenth century, the site of this settlement grew rapidly as the downtown of Busan, which was the first port open to foreign countries in modern Korea. The formation of modern port owes much to the presence of Japanese settlment in Lee Dynasty as long as Choryang was officially designated as the trading port toward Japan and vice versa. Busan is the nearest city to Japan, in fact. Within a day ships could reach Tsushima Island, the island region north of Fukuoka, which played an intermediary role between Seoul and Edo. No architectural remain could be seen on the actual site of Choryang Waekwan. The site has become one of the busiest centers in Busan with quantify of office buildings and shops. The former Busan City Hall was located in this area. The field survey of the site as well as the analysis of historical documents, which were newly found both in Korea and in Japan, enabled to reconstruct the architecture and cityscape of Waekwan by way of computer graphics.

  • The concentrations of aldehydes were measured in downtown area of Buchun and Kwanghwamoon of Seoul from October 1997 to August 1998 using 2-series impingers. The data have been analysed to identify the seasonal pattern of aldehyde sources in metropolitan areas. The measured concentration (in ppbv) of aldehydes were 8.86 $\pm$ 7.28 HCHO (formaldehyde) and 7.79$\pm$7.29 $CH_3$CHO (acetaldehyde) in Buchun, while recording 10.13$\pm$8.58 (HCHO) and 7.64$\pm$6.65 ($CH_3$CHO) in Kwanghwamoon. Their diurnal variation patterns showed significant increase of HCHO and $CH_3$CHO concentration in early afternoon, indicating an increase in secondary sources. Their concentrations however decreased in the nighttime, regardless of seasons. The strength of correlations between certain pairs such as (1) HCHO and CO and (2) $CH_3$CHO and CO were generally high during the winter months (0.64< r < 0.84), suggesting the possibility of similar source processes for HCHO, $CH_3$CHO and CO. On the other hand during the summer months, their correlations are frequently lower than winter months. We suggested that the complexity of source/sink processes during the summer period may reduce the correlations between aldehyde and CO.
