In this paper, numerical experiments are performed to examine the collision between a solitary wave and a wave-packet (dispersive wave) in shallow water. We attempt to introduce the improved Boussinesq equation governing the experiments, which is solved by using a semi-analytical approach, called Pseudo-parameter Iteration method(PIM). Using various numerical experiments, we have observed that the wave-packet (propagating dispersive wave) experiences a phase shift after collision with a solitary wave. This phenomenon may be considered as a nonlinear wave-wave interaction in shallow water.
In optical soliton transmission systems with nonlinear dispersive materials, which is utilized for ultra-long and high bit rate transmission, it is shown that the value of initial time difference between adjacent solitons is analyzed for optimum bit rate. The method is inducted by uncorrelation condition with minimum interaction forces in initial covariance coefficient between adjacent solitons. When the initial time difference is 6 times of soliton pulse width by the results, it is shown that the reliability is maintained with more than 90% within transmission length of soliton period. multiplied by 93.
In the soliton transmission system for a long-length and high bit rate data transmission systme using the nonlinear/dispersive optical fibers, the improtant problem is the loss characteristics and is the limited transmission rate by interaction forces. In this paper, It is explained the reasons of moved time position for the soliton peak value due to interaction force sof adjacent solitons. And for the analysis of interaction force affection level in the losslessmedia, we define the percent parameter of error rate due to the interaction forces and propose the optimum time distance of adjacent solitons by peak value tracking methods. With the results, initial percent of error is approximately 50% when itme difference between adjacent solitons is 5 times of funddametnal soliton pulse width. And it is confirmed that maximum transmission length of th esolitons is approximately 38 times of fundamental soliton period, which the maximum allowable percoent of error is 50%.
This paper introduces a novel parallel shift operator finite-difference time-domain (SO-FDTD) method for plasma in the dispersive media. We calculate the interaction between the electromagnetic wave of various frequencies and non-magnetized plasma by using the parallel SO-FDTD method. Then, we compare the results, which are calculated with serial and parallel SO-FDTD executions to obtain the speedup ratio and validate the parallel execution. We conclude that the parallel SO method has almost the same precision as the serial SO method, while the parallel approach expands the scope of memory and reduces the CPU time.
The effect of solvent structure on the slope in the plot of ln K vs. solute carbon number was examined. It was found that the free energy of methylene group transfer from the gas phase into a solvent was always negative and that the absolute magnitude of interaction free energy between the methylene group and the solvent was always larger than the absolute magnitude of cavity formation free energy of the methylene group in the solvent. Thus, the slope in the plot of ln K vs. solute carbon number was always positive and its value decreases with increase of solvent polarity since the cavity formation energy of the CH₂ unit increases with increase of solvent polarity while the dispersive interaction energy of the CH₂ unit is virtually invariant. We also examined the effect of sequential addition of CH₂ unit to a solvent molecule upon ln K for three homologous series of solvents: n-alkanes, n-alcohols, and n-nitriles. Characteristic trends in the plots of ln K vs. solvent carbon number were observed for individual solvent groups. A decrease of ln K with solvent carbon number was observed for n-alkanes. An abrupt increase in ln K followed by levelling off was observed for n-alcohols while a final slight decrease in ln K after an abrupt increase followed by rapid levelling off was noted for n-nitriles. All of theses phenomena were found related to variation in cavity formation energy. It was clearly shown that a structural change of a polar solvent by sequential addition of CH₂ units causes an abrupt polarity decrease initially, then gradual levelling off, and finally, conversion to a virtually nonpolar solvent if enough CH₂ units are added.
Motivated by the traffic flow model with Arrhenius looka-head relaxation dynamics introduced in [25], this paper proposes a traffic flow model with look ahead relaxation-behind intensification by inserting look behind intensification dynamics to the flux. Finite time shock formation conditions in the proposed model with various types of interaction potentials are identified. Several numerical experiments are performed in order to demonstrate the performance of the modified model. It is observed that, comparing to other well-known macroscopic traffic flow models, the model equipped with look ahead relaxation-behind intensification has both enhanced dispersive and smoothing effects.
The effects of maleic-anhydride-grafted polypropylene (PP-g-MAH) and montmorillonite (MMT) on the wear resistance of polypropylene (PP) were investigated. The surface of MMT was modified with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane, and the interfacial interaction between PP and MMT was improved using PP-g-MAH. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy was used to confirm that silane was grafted on the surface of MMT. The Taber abrasion test and scanning electron microscopy were used to determine the wear resistance and observe the surface morphology of PP, respectively, after wear testing. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy was used to compare the effects of PP-g-MAH and silane modification of MMT on the dispersion of MMT. The results indicated that silane was successfully grafted onto the surface of MMT. Moreover, the wear resistance of PP was improved by the addition of MMT. The wear resistance of PP composites comprising silane-modified MMT and PP-g-MAH was higher than those of other PP composites. This was attributed to silane improving the interfacial interaction between MMT and PP.
OBJECTIVES : In this study, microstructural components of crumb rubber modified asphalt (CRMA) binder were investigated using environmental scanning electron microscope (ESEM). To clearly understand the elemental composition of the CRMA binder, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) was employed on the ESEM samples. METHODS : CRMA binders were produced using open blade mixers at $177^{\circ}C$ for 30 min. The binders were artificially aged through a series of accelerated aging processes. Sample preparation was done by making a mold shape on the glass slide. Thereafter, the morphology of the CRMA binder was observed using the ESEM coupled with the EDX. RESULTS : The images captured from the ESEM indicate that the unaged CRMA binder appears to have a single-phase continuous nonuniform structure after the addition of crumb rubber particles, whereas the artificially aged CRMA binder was observed to have two different phases. ESEM coupled with EDX shows detailed internal structure of the modified binders compared to other technologies (i.e., optical microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and conventional scanning electron microscope). CONCLUSIONS : The captured images resemble the internal structures such as the viscous properties of the unaged CRMA binder and the interaction between the rubber particles and the base binder at aged condition. ESEM is a powerful instrument and with the introduction of EDX, it provided more details of the network microstructure of the asphalt binder. ESEM coupled with EDX is recommended for use in future investigation of microstructure of asphalt binders.
