Animal Models of Cognitive Deficits for Probiotic Treatment

  • Cognitive dysfunction is a common symptom of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and Huntington's disease, and is known to be caused by the structural and functional loss of neurons. Many natural agents that can improve cognitive function have been developed and assessed for efficacy using various cognitive deficit animal models. As the gut environment is known to be closely connected to brain function, probiotics are attracting attention as an effective treatment target that can prevent and mitigate cognitive deficits as a result of neurodegenerative diseases. Thus, the objective of this review is to provide useful information about the types and characteristics of cognitive deficit animal models, which can be used to evaluate the anti-cognitive effects of probiotics. In addition, this work reviewed recent studies describing the effects and treatment conditions of probiotics on cognitive deficit animal models. Collectively, this review shows the potential of probiotics as edible natural agents that can mitigate cognitive impairment. It also provides useful information for the design of probiotic treatments for cognitive deficit patients in future clinical studies.

  • Since Rice bacterial grain rot (RGBR) was reported at 1986 in Korea, it has been severely occurred in 1994, 1995, 1998, and especially around 16,609 ha in 2000, and became a major disease in rice cultivation field. This study was focused on investigation of ecology of RGBR, weather conditions that affect development of epidemics, and development of an effective RGBR forecast system based on weather conditions during the rice heading period.(중략)

Postharvest 약제가 처리된 사과의 저장조건에 따른 품질변화 (Change in the Quality of Apples Treated with Postharvest Fungicides under Different Storage Conditions)

  • This study was conducted to determine the effects of storage conditions on apples treated with postharvest fungicides, benomyl and bitertanol. The fungicideds were applied to control Postharverst disease in apples during CA and cold storage. The stored Apple were tested monthly for weight loss, flesh firmness, titratable acidity, prix and free sugar. Relative to the control group, the pstharvest fungicide stoup had less disease. The fungicide treated apples stored in CA had a higher measured weight, better firmness and maintained acidity, prix and free sugar when compared to the control stoup monthly and after 200days. The fungicide treated apples in cold storage maintained their quality for 120days.

임상가를 위한 특집 2 - 구강점막의 궤양성 병소 (Ulcerative Conditions of Oral Mucosa)

  • An ulcer is defined as loss of epithelium. Although many oral ulcers have similar clinical appearances, their etiologies encompass many disorders, including trauma, infection, immunologic disease, and malignant oral cancer. Oral squamous cell carcinoma(SCC) occupying about 90% of oral cancer, usually manifests as unhealed ulcer over 2 weeks. Oral SCC can metastasize to the cervical neck lymph node, and therefore the surgical therapeutic modality for oral SCC could encompass the neck node dissection as well as wide excision for primary lesions, which should leave the post-operative complication of functional damage like dysphagia and facial deformity. Therefore, it is important to discriminate oral SCC from other ulcerative conditions to make a prompt management. The knowledge for the pathogenesis of the ulcerative lesions could help the clinicians to understand the differences of clinical features and to practice an appropriate therapeutics.

Note Biological Control of Fusarium Wilt in Tomato by Plant Growth-Promoting Yeasts and Rhizobacteria

  • Three plant growth-promoting yeasts and two rhizobacteria were tested for controlling tomato wilt caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici under green-house and field conditions. Under greenhouse and field conditions, all treatments were significantly reduced disease severity of tomato wilt relative to the infected control. The highest disease reductions in pots (75.0, 67.4%) and field (52.5, 42.4%) were achieved by Azospirillum brasilense and Bacillus subtilis compared to infected control. Under field condition all treatments produced the highest tomato yield compared to the control plants inoculated with the pathogen.

기관지확장증의 외과적 치료 (Surgical Treatment of Bronchiectasis)

  • This study is based on an analysis of 76 cases of bronchiectasis treated by pulmonary resection at the Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, School of Medicine, Keimyung University from September, 1978, to February, 1989. There were 37 males and 39 females, and their age raged from 7 to 75 years, with 66 cases (87.7%) between 10 and 39 years. The past history included mealses(36/8%), frequent URI (26.3%), pulmonary tuberculosis(23.7%), and pneumonia or bronchitis (21.1%). The main clinical symptoms were cough(90.8%), purulent sputum(88.2%), hemoptysis(64.5%). The preperative diagnosis was made by bronchography. Thirty-five cylindrical, 16 cystic, 1 varicose and 20 mixed types of bronchiectasis were noted. The majority of the cases had disease in the dependent portion of the lung. Various types of pulmonary resection were performed. Early complications developed in 10 cases(13.2%), but no operative death. THe follow-up ranged from 10 months to 137 months. In 57 cases having resection of all bronchiectatic lesion, 48(84.2%) had excellent or improved conditions, but 5(8.8%), unchanged. In 19 cases whom not all demonstrable disease removed, 14(73.7%) had excellent or improved conditions, but 3(15.8%0, unchanged.

  • The anti-predator factor due to fear of predator in eco- epidemiological models has a great importance and cannot be evaded. The present paper consists of a modified Lesli-Gower predator-prey model with contagious disease in the predator population only and also consider the fear effect in the prey population. Boundedness and positivity have been studied to ensure the eco-epidemiological model is well-behaved. The existence and stability conditions of all possible equilibria of the model have been studied thoroughly. Considering the fear constant as bifurcating parameter, the conditions for the existence of limit cycle under which the system admits a Hopf bifurcation are investigated. The detailed study for direction of Hopf bifurcation have been derived with the use of both the normal form and the central manifold theory. We observe that the increasing fear constant, not only reduce the prey density, but also stabilize the system from unstable to stable focus by excluding the existence of periodic solutions.

The Role of a Neurovascular Signaling Pathway Involving Hypoxia-Inducible Factor and Notch in the Function of the Central Nervous System

  • In the neurovascular unit, the neuronal and vascular systems communicate with each other. O2 and nutrients, reaching endothelial cells (ECs) through the blood stream, spread into neighboring cells, such as neural stem cells, and neurons. The proper function of neural circuits in adults requires sufficient O2 and glucose for their metabolic demands through angiogenesis. In a central nervous system (CNS) injury, such as glioma, Parkinson's disease, and Alzheimer's disease, damaged ECs can contribute to tissue hypoxia and to the consequent disruption of neuronal functions and accelerated neurodegeneration. This review discusses the current evidence regarding the contribution of oxygen deprivation to CNS injury, with an emphasis on hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF)-mediated pathways and Notch signaling. Additionally, it focuses on adult neurological functions and angiogenesis, as well as pathological conditions in the CNS. Furthermore, the functional interplay between HIFs and Notch is demonstrated in pathophysiological conditions.

Conditions for the disinfectant efficacy test under subzero temperatures

  • To establish appropriate conditions for a disinfectant efficacy test at subzero temperatures, this study examined mixtures of frozen foot-and-mouth disease virus or avian influenza virus solutions and disinfectant diluents at $-5^{\circ}C$ and monitored temperature and freezing status of an anti-freezing diluent (AFD, 15% ethanol + 30% propylene glycol + 55% distilled water) over time at various subzero temperatures. Viral solutions and disinfectant diluents froze before the mixtures reached $-5^{\circ}C$, whereas the AFD was not frozen at $-30^{\circ}C$. The times taken for the AFD to reach -10, -20, -30, and $-40^{\circ}C$ from room temperature were 36, 39, 45, and 48 min, respectively.

  • Cellular senescence, a process of cell proliferation arrest in response to various stressors, has been considered to be important factor in age-related disease. Identification of senescent cells in tissues is limited and the role of senescent cells is poorly understood. Recently however, several studies showed the characterization of senescent cells in various pathologic conditions and the role of senescent cells in disease progression is becoming important. Senescent cells are growth-arrested cells, however, the senescence associated secretory phenotype (SASP) of senescent cells could modify the tissues' microenvironment. Here, we discuss the progress and understanding of the role of senescent cells in tissues of pathologic conditions and discuss the development of new therapeutic paradigms, such as senescent cells-targeted therapy.
