An Exploratory Analysis of Discourse Types and Meaning-making Strategies Used by a Beginning Teacher in Secondary Science Class (담화양상과 의미형성전략에 관한 초임 교사의 중등 과학수업 사례 탐색)

  • This study analyzed discourse types and meaning making strategies used in a secondary beginning science teacher's class. A voluntary middle school science teacher participated in this study, and her instruction was observed and videotaped. The analysis consisted of two parts. First, we categorized the types of discourses occurred in class. Second, we examined her instructional strategies used through meaning making practices at the micro-level. Results indicated that there were five episodes emerged representing different discourse types and meaning making strategies in the beginning teacher's lesson about 'the pathway and property of light'. Conclusion and implications for further study and teacher professional development were presented in the paper.

An Analysis on the News Frame of Game by Korean Media (한국 언론의 게임 보도 프레임 분석)

  • This study aims at examining our social recognition on and the topographic map of a game through the discourse analysis on games shown from the Korean media coverage. Media don't reflect the reality as a mirror but represent it in certain manner. If so, how Korean media organize and represent the meaning of a game? This study analyzed the game discourse from 479 articles on games by 5 daily newspapers including Chosun, Joongang, Dong-A, Kyunghyang and the Hankyoreh during 4 years' Park Geun-hye administration. Research findings show that as a single issue frames of game addiction, addiction damages and AR games including $Pok\acute{e}mon$ Go counted for much reaching up to nearly half but discourse on the play culture as an essence of a game occupied only 3.8%.

  • Based on the metadata of BIGkids, a news big data system, this study analyzed the trends of news coverage by the major fields and topics related to Deoksugung Doldam-gil in mass media. In addition, we tried to interpret the space discourse of Deoksugung Doldam-gil which has been formed in contemporary period through the analysis of data related to BIGKinds, the contents of related reports and context. As a result of the analysis, the coverage of Deoksugung Doldam-gil was mostly reported in the field of 'Culture', and the news related to 'Cooking_Travel', 'Exhibition_Performance' and 'Broadcasting Entertainment.' Deoksugung Doldam-gil was categorized as the pedestrian freindly street, the cultural and artistic street, and the historical street, and interpreted the spatial discourse with related news contents.

Observation and analysis of elementary mathematics classroom discourse (초등 수학 수업의 이해를 위한 관찰과 분석)

  • In this paper I attempt to survey on the theories of observation and analysis of mathematics classroom discourse. In order to discuss applicability of the theories I look at preservice teachers' observation of mathe-matics classroom and teachers' conception of mathematics lesson. In examining reports from preservice teachers' I identify how they understand mathematics lesson and how the theories can enhance their understanding. Not surprisingly, there are lots of obstacles for teachers to practice mathe-matics educational theories. 1 find some features of their efforts or attempts to overcome the obstacles in an attempt to gain insights into alternative ways of concep-tualizing the methods of observation and analysis through the interview and the discussion with teachers.

  • This study is semiotic analysis about 'dumb ways to die' that is produced by Melbourne Railway of Australia in 2012. By analyzing the symbolic representations through 'Actants model' of A.J. Greimas, extract the relationship between signification of the represented object in 'dumb ways to die'. Greimas' model helps to analyze the semiotic interpretation action that occurs above a layer of discourse. In addition, this study is to compare the property to distinguish the Semiotic 'Actants' to cause the behavior of the recipient by represented in the same ideological situation. This can determine the properties of the signification and gauge the level of symbolic images that are reproduced in the discourse process. Accordingly, guidance to become a developer by extracting the reproduction principle of the video that causes a user's action.

A Study on the Written Texts of a High School Mathematics Textbook and Teacher's Classroom Discourse -A Focus on 'The Relationship between Quadratic Functions and Quadratic Equations'- (고등학교 수학교과서의 설명텍스트와 교사 설명담화에 대한 체계기능언어학적 비교 분석 - '이차함수와 이차방정식의 관계'를 중심으로 -)

  • This study analyzed the written texts of textbook and the teacher's discourse explaining 'the relationship between quadratic functions and quadratic equations' in the 9th grade high school mathematics class. Data consisted of the lecture recordings and the textbooks were analyzed based on the Halliday's systemic functional linguistics. According to the results, the written texts of the textbook used lexico-grammatical strategies such as generalization using hyponomy of meanings, mathematical objectification through nominalization and materialization of meaning through change in themes to compose mathematical concepts. The textbook generalized from an example in the description of formulating mathematical concepts, and in this process the organizational interactions of discourse-semantic level and lexico-grammartical level appeared. On the other hand, the teacher's doscourse appeared the change in transitivity and the addition of the reasons and the process. Also the teacher used explanation process of formulating the relationship between quadratic functions and quadratic equations. The linguistic characteristics of the teacher were linguistic implication and omission of lexemes due to contextual ommission. And there was no use of structural lexico-grammatical resources that influence the discourse-semantic level. This results provide a new framework for analyzing mathematical discourse, and suggest the lexico-grammatical strategies that can be used to explain mathematical concepts by teachers in math classrooms.

Korean 'Social Welfare' Delivery System and Its Discourse Relation - Historical Formation, Pathway, and Present Issues - (우리나라 '사회복지' 전달체계와 담론적 작용 - 역사적 형성과 경로, 쟁점 -)

  • This study aims to analyze the formation of Korean social welfare delivery system and its pathway, from which the pending issues are to be discussed on the organizations and personnel of the delivery system using the word 'social welfare' with its related discourse. Historical institutionalism is chosen as the perspective to explain path-dependent change and critical juncture, and various legislative data are used as the indicative signals for the discourse of 'social welfare'. The results of the study are as follows. First, the term 'social welfare' began to be institutionalized in Korea by the enactment of Livehood Protection Law(1961). Second, the policies by the year 1987 of expanding social welfare center and introducing social welfare professionals as civil servants form a critical juncture which makes the social welfare discourse realized as the institutional realities. Third, until the year around 2014, the system has not changed in the perspective of macro framework. Fourth, currently the system shows several signs of severe turmoil, which might lead to dismantle the system of 'social welfare' discourse. To conclude, this study shows the possibility of explaining organizations and personnel composing the social welfare delivery system by the usage of discourse analysis, treating it as an analytical entity.

A Discourse Analysis of Middle School Students in Mathematical Modeling Teaching and Learning (수학적 모델링 교수·학습에서 중학생들의 담화 분석)

  • This research is an analysis of communication that occurs during the quadratic function teaching and learning process of middle school students, which reflects mathematical modeling. For an in-depth analysis of the communication, Sfard(2008)'s discourse theory and language analysis framework were applied. A quadratic function mathematical modeling teaching and learning were conducted for the week second (1 hour) in June 2019 for students who studied the concept of a quadratic function and who passed a specified period (3 months). The results are as follows. First, The commo-gnitive conflict occurred because of differences in prior knowledge other than quadratic function among students. Second, in the course of communication, knowledge was expanded through problem-solving from different perspectives. These results can be interpreted as allowing students to clearly reveal problems in the communication process based on their understanding of the concept of quadratic functions and to facilitate cooperation among students. of the concept of quadratic functions and to facilitate cooperation among students.

COVID-19 Discourse and Social Welfare Intervention through Online News Big Data: Focusing on the Elderly Living Alone (온라인 뉴스 빅데이터를 통한 코로나 19 담론과 사회복지 개입방안: 독거노인을 중심으로)

  • The purpose of this study is to provide clues to social welfare policy making by revealing discourse on social intervention and response based on big data on elderly living alone in the COVID-19 situation. Keyword analysis, network analysis, and topic analysis were utilized to explore the ways in which news media have portrayed challenges facing older individuals and the ways in which the central and local government as well as private organization have responded to them. Results are as follows. First, networks(degree, closeness, betweenness) were formed around region, delivery, society, support, and vulnerability, suggesting an increased demand for economic assistance and social support as well as stronger service delivery systems. Second, key topics derived included "establishing public delivery systems", "establishing local networks", "Managing care gap", "Establishing a private economic support system", and "Establishing service organization system". Based on the research results, discourse on the organic role of government, communities and the private sector has been presented, suggesting policy and practical implications by proposing a discussion on how to intervene for elderly living alone in disaster situations such as COVID-19.
