A Study on Kernel Type Discontinuity Point Estimations

  • Kernel type estimations of discontinuity point at an unknown location in regression function or its derivatives have been developed. It is known that the discontinuity point estimator based on $Gasser-M\ddot{u}ller$ regression estimator with a one-sided kernel function which has a zero value at the point 0 makes a poor asymptotic behavior. Further, the asymptotic variance of $Gasser-M\ddot{u}ller$ regression estimator in the random design case is 1.5 times larger that the one in the corresponding fixed design case, while those two are identical for the local polynomial regression estimator. Although $Gasser-M\ddot{u}ller$ regression estimator with a one-sided kernel function which has a non-zero value at the point 0 for the modification is used, computer simulation show that this phenomenon is also appeared in the discontinuity point estimation.

  • The roughness of discontinuity significantly influences the mechanical characteristics of rock masses and extensively affects thermal and hydraulic behaviors. In this study, we utilized photogrammetry to generate 3D point cloud data for discontinuity and applied this data to characterize the roughness of discontinuity. The discontinuity profiles, reconstructed from the 3D point cloud data, were compared with those manually measured using a profile gauge. This comparison served to validate the accuracy and reliability of the acquired point cloud data in replicating the actual configurations of rock surfaces. Subsequent to this validation, influence of the number of profiles for representative JRC assessment was further investigated followed by suggestion of roughness anisotropy evaluation method with application of it to actual rock discontinuity surfaces.

Nonparametric Detection of a Discontinuity Point in the Variance Function with the Second Moment Function

  • In this paper we consider detection of a discontinuity point in the variance function. When the mean function is discontinuous at a point, the variance function is usually discontinuous at the point. In this case, we had better estimate the location of the discontinuity point with the mean function rather than the variance function. On the other hand, the variance function only has a discontinuity point. The target function in order to estimate the location can be used the second moment function since the variance function and the second moment function have the same location and jump size of the discontinuity point. We propose a nonparametric detection method of the discontinuity point with the second moment function. We give the asymptotic results of these estimators. Computer simulation demonstrates the improved performance of the method over the existing ones.

  • Probability density or its derivatives may have a discontinuity/change point at an unknown location. We propose a method of estimating the location and the jump size of the discontinuity point based on kernel type density or density derivatives estimators with one-sided equivalent kernels. The rates of convergence of the proposed estimators are derived, and the finite-sample performances of the methods are illustrated by simulated examples.

  • A regression function in generalized linear model may have a discontinuity/change point at unknown location. In order to estimate the location of the discontinuity point and its jump size, the strategy is to use a nonparametric approach based on one-sided kernel weighted local-likelihood functions. Weak convergences of the proposed estimators are established. The finite-sample performances of the proposed estimators with practical aspects are illustrated by simulated examples.

  • The WKB method has been widely used in evaluating of the propagation characteristics of planar waveguides with graded-index profiles. This method, however, yields large errors when a turning point is near or at the discontinuity in the presence of the index discontinuity or index slope discontinuity. Especially, in the case of a truncated-index profile, this phenomenon appears more clearly in the low-order modes and near the cutoff regions. The MWKB method is introduced to reduce these inherent errors of the conventional WKB method. The MWKB method is based on both the linearization of the index profile from an index discontinuity and the introduction of a virtual turning point. It is noticed that the b-v curves obtained by the MWKB method agree well with those of the finite-difference method, and that the phase shift at a turning point depends on both the index profile and its propagation constant.   • This paper deals with numerical modeling of dynamic failure phenomena in rate-sensitive brittle and/or ductile materials. To this end, a two-dimensional continuum viscodamage-embedded discontinuity model, which is based on our previous work (see Do et al. 2017), is developed. More specifically, the pre-peak nonlinear and rate-sensitive hardening response of the material behavior, representing the fracture-process zone creation, is described by a rate-dependent continuum damage model. Meanwhile, an embedded displacement discontinuity model is used to formulate the post-peak response, involving the macro-crack creation accompanied by exponential softening. The numerical implementation in the context of the finite element method exploiting the second-order mid-point scheme is discussed in detail. In order to show the performance of the model several numerical examples are included.

  • Let us consider that the variance function in regression model has a discontinuity/change point at unknown location. Yu and Jones (2004) proposed the local polynomial fit to estimate the log-variance function which break the positivity of the variance. Using the local polynomial fit, Huh (2008) estimate the discontinuity point of the log-variance function. We propose a test for the existence of a discontinuity point in the log-variance function with the estimated jump size in Huh (2008). The proposed method is based on the asymptotic distribution of the estimated jump size. Numerical works demonstrate the performance of the method.

  • In the case that the probability density function has a discontinuity point, Huh (2002) estimated the location and jump size of the discontinuity point based on the difference between the right and left kernel density estimators using the one-sided kernel function. In this paper, we consider the cross-validation, made by the right and left maximum likelihood cross-validations, for the bandwidth selection in order to estimate the location and jump size of the discontinuity point. This method is motivated by the one-sided cross-validation of Hart and Yi (1998). The finite sample performance is illustrated by simulated example.
