  • Objectives Taking detailed patient history helps earlier diagnosis and treatment of developmental disability. In this study we analyzed the clinical questionnaire to find out the clinical characteristics of those with five-retardation, five-limpness, or five-stiffness. Methods The data was collected from 484 children under the age of six who have visited H oriental medicine clinic for developmental delay. The clinical questionnaire was filled out by their parents and the data was analyzed statistically. Results 436 children showed symptoms of five-retardation, 90 children suffered from five-stiffness, 54 children showed five-limpness and 7 children suffered from five-stiffness and five-limpness complex. Generally, boys had higher chance to show disease symptoms than the girls (2.32:1) and 40 children (8.26%) reported family history of developmental disability. Cerebral palsy ranks the most common familial disease, followed by developmental delay, mental retardation, autistic disorder and language disorder. Among the children we have studied, 285 children (63.19%) showed delayed unassisted walk while 192 children (42.57%) had language disorder. Also, 138 children (28.51%) had both walk and language disorders. The children in this study also showed delayed toilet training and half of them had little stranger anxiety when they were infants. It was also found that 120 children (24.79%) experienced epilepsy. This study reaffirmed that low birth weight, premature birth, and suffocation are major risks causing neurological damage. Conclusions They had history which including family history, problems at birth, epilepsy, face recognition, muscle tone disorder, delayed walking without assistance, language ability, and toilet training.

College students attending in A University and B University in Gwangju Metropolitan City were selected using convenience sampling and 370 samples were finally analyzed. The results were as follows. First, the subjects who took a disability course had high perception of the right to vote of persons with developmental disabilities. Second, it was discovered that the more times people participated in the volunteer work related to disabilities, the more recognition they had on the voting rights of people with developmental disabilities. Third, the subjects who responded for the need for the political rights of persons with developmental disabilities had more positive perception of the right to vote of persons with developmental disabilities than those who did not responded. Based on the findings, it was suggested that methods should be investigated to establish positive attitude and perception of the right to vote of persons with developmental disabilities in persons without developmental disabilities including college students.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the associations between care strain and depression among mothers of child with developmental disability and to verify the moderating effect of resilience in the relationship between these two variables. The participants was 200 mothers of children with developmental disabilities using programs related to developmental disability of 15 community welfare centers in Gyeonggi province. Major findings are as follows. First, 15% of mothers of child with developmental disabilities were depression risk group. Second, mother's strain were associated with depression and the resilience moderated the relationship between care strain and depression. Based on these findings, it is suggested that policy makers and practitioners should expand intervention program not only for alleviating care strain but also improving mother's resilience to prevent depression of mothers with children developmental disabilities.

  • The Guarantee of Rights and Support for Persons with Developmental Disabilities Act was enacted and revised in 2014. However, national measures for persons with developmental disabilities remain insufficient. In the film, "Grown Up," director Hyeyoung Jang filmed the daily life of her sister, who has developmental disabilities. She raised not only the issue of institutionalization in people with developmental disabilities in Korea but also the issue of a lack of policies that would be essential to them and their family members. In the future, I hope that as experts, child and adolescent psychiatrists in Korea will pay more attention to the lives of people with developmental disabilities outside the clinic and propose policies to help them and their family members.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of a tactile-oriented sensory-motor developmental program on the visual attention and stereotypical behavior of an adolescent with intellectual disability. The subject was an adolescent with intellectual disability attending a special school located in B-gun, A-province of South Korea, with whom an A-B-A' design individual target study was conducted between August 27 and December 12, 2018. The intervention consisted of twelve 40-minute sessions, which were provided twice a week. For every session, two types of evaluation were conducted: a test that required staring at objects for visual attention, as well as an observation record for identifying the frequency and duration of stereotypical behavior. The results of this study showed that the tactile-oriented sensory-motor developmental program had positive effects on the duration of the participant's ability to stare at objects and the frequency and duration of stereotypical behavior. As this study confirmed and usefulness of this tactile-oriented sensory-motor developmental program as an intervention for improving the visual attention, and stereotypical behavior of adolescent with intellectual disabilities, the program may be employed to help members of this groups who have problems with sensory processing.

  • Purpose : The purpose of this study was to investigate functional disability for the elderly in rural Korea and to identify influencing factors of functional disability. Methods : The data were collected for 76 community-dwelling elderly in rural area and above 65 years. We assessed cognitive function, functional disability, depression using LACLS, WHODAS 2.0, SGDS-K. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics for general characteristics of subjects, Spearman's correlation among LACLS, SGDS-K, WHODAS 2.0, age, educational levels. And multiple regression was used to find influencing factors of functional disability. Results : As a result of this study, we identified that WHODAS 2.0 total score was 50.59, summary score was 9.94 and functional disability of the elderly in rural area is in the 70th percentile. The highest level of disability occurred in areas related to 'life activities (household)', 'participation in society' and the lowest level of disability occured in areas of 'self-care', 'getting along with people'. Functional disability was significantly correlated with age (r=.398), cognitive function (r=-.547), depression (r=-.563) but not educational levels (r=-.215). Finally, we confirmed that depression (𝛽=.371), cognitive function (𝛽=-.263), widowed status (𝛽=.303), age (𝛽=.272), non-participation of community program (𝛽=.165) was significantly influencing factors of functional disability and the explanatory power of these factors was 52.80 %. Conclusion : This study revealed important factors of functional disability. Therefore, we need to consider these factors when we developed program related to health for the elderly (aged > 65 years) in rural Korea. Further, we need to standardize WHODAS 2.0 in order to enhance its applicability in clinical practices.
