  • Fatigue life prediction is based on fracture mechanics and database which is established from experimental method. Rubber material also uses the same way for fatigue life prediction. But the absence of standardization of rubber material, various way of composition by each rubber company and uncertainty of fracture criterion makes the design of fatigue life by experimental method almost impossible. Tearing energy which has its origin in energy release rate is evaluated as fracture criterion of rubber material and the applicability of fatigue life prediction method are considered. The system of measuring tearing energy using the principal of virtual crack extension method and fatigue life prediction by the minimum number of experiments are proposed.

  • The objective of this study is to develop an analytical module for the prediction of burr formation during cutting process using the finite element method. This module is based on the rigid-plastic finite element method, ductile fracture criterion, fracture propagation technique and node separation criterion. The sequence of burr formation from burr initiation through end of burr formation is simulated and investigated by this module. The effect of material properties, such as AL6061-T6, AL2024-T4 and Copper, and cutting condition, such as rake angle and cutting depth, on burr formation is also discussed in this study. To validate this module the analysis results are compared with experimental ones.

  • This paper considers the issue of obtaining the optimal design in Poisson regression model when the sample size is small. Poisson regression model is widely used for the analysis of count data. Asymptotic theory provides the basis for making inference on the parameters in this model. However, for small size experiments, asymptotic approximations, such as unbiasedness, may not be valid. Therefore, first, we employ the second order expansion of the bias of the maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) and derive the mean square error (MSE) of MLE to measure the quality of an estimator. We then define DM-optimality criterion, which is based on a function of the MSE. This criterion is applied to obtain locally optimal designs for small size experiments. The effect of sample size on the obtained designs are shown. We also obtain locally DM-optimal designs for some special cases of the model.

  • In this paper, the maximum minimum strain energy density criterion was applied to the mixed mode fatigue test of A5052 H34 alloy. In this study result we can have seen that the authors stress intensity factor for the finite width specimen and method of determining testing load, based on the plastic zone size and the limited maximum stress intensity factor by ASTM STANDARD E-647-95, is useful.

  • $D^*$ criterion is defined as a reference of the handling quality and ride comfortableness for lateral-directional automobile motion. However it is generally difficult to obtain the satisfied handling quality and ride comfortableness based on $D^*$ criterion by conventional two wheel steering system. In this study, a design method of model matching control system is proposed to obtain the satisfied $D^*$ response of 4 Wheel Steering.

  • Galloping instability of dry inclined cables of cable-stayed bridges has been reported by Japanese researchers. A suggested stability criterion based on some experimental studies in Japan implies that many of stay cables would be expected to suffer galloping instability, which, if valid, would cause serious difficulty in the design of cable-stayed bridges. However, this is not the case in reality. Thus, it is practically urgent and necessary to confirm the validity of this criterion and possible restriction of it. In the present study, a 2D sectional cable model was tested in the wind tunnel, and effects of various physical parameters were investigated. It is found that the stability criterion suggested by Japanese researchers is more conservative than the results obtained from the current study.

  • This study was carried out an experimental and finite element analysis on the fracture behavior of straight pipes with local wall thinning under internal pressure. Local wall thinning was machined on the pipes in order to simulate erosion/corrosion metal loss. The configurations of the eroded area has an eroded ratio of d/t=0.80~0.92 and an eroded length of l=25, 50 and 102 mm. Three-dimensional elastic-plastic analyses were also carried out using the finite element method, which is able to accurately simulate failure behaviors. In regards to the relation ship between pressure and eroded ratio, the criterion that can be used safely under operating pressure and design pressure were obtained from this calculation. The results of this calculation were in relatively good agreement with that of the experiment.

  • In this paper, we propose a novel stability criterion and a guideline of controller design for switched linear systems. Unlike existing criterions such as Lie algebraic method and multiple Lyapunov functions method, the proposed criterion can be applied to each individual system without considering an overall system. By applying the proposed criterion to each individual system separately, a state feedback controller can be easily designed. Stability of the overall system is proved by developing a rule to determine non-increasing Lyapunov functions recursively at each switching instant. An illustrative example is given.

  • In a DES-like cryptosystem, the S(ubstitution) boxes determine its cryptographic strength as well as its nonlinearity. When in an S box a part of the output depends on a part of the input. It can be broken by the chosen plaintext attack. To prevent this attack, every output bit should changes with a probability of one half when ever a single input bit is complemented. We call this criterion Strict Avalanche criterion(SAC), which was proposed by Webster and Tavared. In this paper, we propose simple construction method of Boolean functions satisfying the SAC and bijective functions satisfying the maximum order SAC in order to design cryptographically desirable S-boxes. Also, practical construction examples of S-boxes are provided.

  • Before evaluating convergent, discriminant, and known-groups validity, it is suggested to design an instrument that reflects hypothetical relationships or differences with other comparator instruments or groups. For criterion validity, a gold-standard instrument measuring the same construct should be carefully selected.
