  • Purpose: The purpose of this qualitative study was to evaluate the experience of role adaptation from nurse to member of the nursing faculty. Methods: Data were collected from 13 members of a nursing faculty through in-depth interviews. The main question asked was "Could you describe your experience from being a nurse to becoming a member of the nursing faculty?" Qualitative data from the field and transcribed notes were analyzed using Strauss and Corbin's grounded theory methodology. Results: The core experiential category of role adaptation from nurse to member of the nursing faculty was 'striving for survival from culture shock'. The participants used the following three interactional strategies: 'recognizing everything and entering the school environment', 'self-reflection on being a professor and integration of experiences', and 'finding a way of adapting'. Conclusion: The participants tried to adapt to life as a professor and reflected on and integrated their experiences into their new life on the faculty. College faculty need to understand the impact of changes and challenges faced by new professors during role adaptation and to support this adaptation through mentorship and organized orientation programs.

  • The adaptation effect originating from the chemical synapse between auditory nerve and inner hair cell gives advantage in accurate representation of temporal cues of incoming speech such as speech onset. Thus it is expected that the modification of conventional speech processing strategies of cochlear implant(CI) by incorporating the adaptation effect will result in considerable improvement of speech perception performance such as consonant perception score. Our purpose in this paper was to evaluate our new CI speech processing strategy incorporating the adaptation effect by the observation of auditory nerve responses. By classifying the presence or absence of speech from the auditory nerve responses, i. e. spike trains, we could quantitatively compare speech onset detection performances of conventional and improved strategies. We could verify the effectiveness of the adaptation effect in improving the speech onset representation characteristics.

  • Purpose: This study aimed to compare three-dimensional adaptation with the rinsing time of the temporary crown produced using the digital light processing method. Methods: The maxillary right first molar abutment was scanned with a dental scanner. A temporary crown was designed with the scanned abutment. The designed crown was made of 10 temporary crowns using a digital light processing printer. The crowns were divided into the 5-minute and 10-minute rinsing groups; 5 temporary crown washes were performed for each group. In order to obtain the internal data, each group was scanned for a temporary crown. The three-dimensional fit was measured by superimposing the scanned internal surface data and the abutment data. The average comparison of three-dimensional adaptation was analyzed using the Mann-Whitney U test. Results: The 5-minute rinsing group showed a significantly higher adaptation of 71.42±3.08 ㎛ as compared to the 10-minute rinsing group (67.52±0.92 ㎛) (p<0.05). Conclusion: When making a temporary crown with a digital light processing method, a rinsing time of 10 minutes is appropriate.
