  • The purpose of this study was to provide the basic data needed to plan the effective teaching design of scaling education and to measure the changes in students' confidence in performing scaling according to the number of scaling practices. Scaling education is presented as a core basic hygiene competency of dental hygienists and evaluated as the practical competency of dental hygienists. This study selected 48 third-year students from the department of dental hygiene at S University in Asan, and analyzed data from completed participant surveys. The degree of "confidence in facing the subject in clinical practice," "confidence in applying hand instrument to the subject," and "confidence in applying ultrasonic instruments to the subject" was assessed on a five-point Likert scale. The difference in confidence was analyzed during five practice sessions. Each response was compared using frequency analysis, chi-square test, and repeated measurement ANOVA. Students who complained of a lack of confidence in the 14.6%, 25.0%, and 12.5%, respectively, in face-to-face practice, hand instruments, and ultrasonic instrument application responses. The more the practice was repeated, the more confident students were in all three categories, and the more statistically significant (p<0.001). As the number of scaling practice sessions increased, students' confidence in performing scaling also improved. In particular, the level of self-confidence was higher after the third practice session when compared to the first session. Therefore, it is necessary to design effective courses for teaching scaling practices so that at least three repetitive practice periods can be provided in clinical dental hygiene practices.

  • This study was to investigate the supporting awareness and empathy with the dental hygiene student. The participants were 193 dental hygiene students in Gwang Ju city and analyzed by the frequency analyzed, t-test, ANOVA, pearson corelation coefficients and multiple regression analysis using IBM SPSS STATICS 20.0. Supporting awareness and empathy about the elderly had a significant positive correlation. Factors influencing empathy were interest of elderly problem and supporting awareness. It is necessary to the establishment of a subject and education program about elderly in dental hygiene students.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the convergence factors affecting professional identity perceived by the emotional labor of clinical practice and self-esteem in some dental hygiene students. The questionnaire was conducted in 205 dental hygiene students from 3 university in Jeollanam-do area. The data were analyzed using SPSS 12.0. Professional identity correlated positively with self-esteem(r=0.366, p<0.01), negatively with emotional labor of clinical practice(r=-0.213, p<0.01). The convergence factors influencing professional identity were satisfaction level with majors(${\beta}=0.434$), self-esteem(${\beta}=0.236$) and emotional labor of clinical practice(${\beta}=-0.199$). The regression model explained 34.6% of professional identity. Therefore, to enhance professional identity in dental hygiene students, it is required to program development to improve satisfaction level of with majors, self-esteem and management of emotional labor of clinical practice.

The data was collected from May, 2017 to June, 2017. Characteristics relative to variables were measured. As the result, in tuberculosis infection for the students of the department of dental hygiene, the average point was 13.56points for knowledge; 45.75 points for behavior and 41.75points for prevent behavior. In tuberculosis infection for the students of the department of non-dental hygiene, the average point was 12.93points for knowledge; 45.58points for behavior and 42.01 for prevent behavior. As the result of the study, the student's knowledge of tuberculosis had the effect on behavior, but it didn't have the effect on prevent behavior, on the other hand, it had the effect on prevent behavior. The result of this study may be utilized for an educational program for preventing tuberculosis infection of the students.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness and perception of eco-friendly oral products by comparing and analyzing the dental bacterial film removal rate of eco-friendly toothbrushes and general toothbrushes, and by examining the satisfaction of the research subjects with toothbrushes through questionnaires. As a result of the study, there was no significant difference in the removal rate of dental bacterial film between eco-friendly toothbrushes and general toothbrushes, so it was found that the function of eco-friendly toothbrushes was not much different from that of ordinary toothbrushes, and the satisfaction with eco-friendly toothbrushes was generally positive.

  • Objectives: This study was to compare the self-evaluated outcomes of communication competency in dental hygiene process of care in the students of a dental hygiene department with the teaching evaluation, and to confirm the difference of communication competency by the evaluator. Methods: This study attempted to confirm the value and usefulness of self-evaluation and teaching evaluation on the communication competency. The subjects of this study were 43 junior students who took a course of dental medical communication at the dental hygiene department of a university located in 'A' city, and the self-evaluation and teaching evaluation were conducted using the evaluation paper which was modified from the communication evaluation tool in the previous studies. The collected data were subjected to the correspondence sample t-test to compare the difference between the communication competency self-evaluation before and after the education, and after communication education, while an independent sample T-test was conducted to compare the differences between the evaluators. Results: The student's self-evaluations before and after the education showed the statistically significant difference, moreover, the post-education competency scores were improved mostly in all the items more than the pre-education competency scores. The score of self-evaluation was higher than that of the teaching evaluation in all items except one question in the case of history-information collection stage. Conclusions: It is confirmed that there is an effect to allow the students to improve their communication competency in the dental health communication education in the dental hygiene department. To evaluate the student's communication competency, the mutual complement of self-evaluation and teaching evaluation should be confirmed in parallel each other.

  • Objectives: This study was conducted by clinical dentistry hygienists to develop knowledge measurement tools and evaluate knowledge necessary to cope with emergencies related to systemic diseases occurring in dentistry. Methods: Basic questions were developed on the six most frequently occurring diseases in the dental office: diabetes, syncope, respiratory disease, coronary artery disease, cerebrovascular disease, and epilepsy. Fifty-eight preliminary questions were composed in a survey format through expert validation. The survey was then conducted on 290 dental hygienists to verify the composition validity and reliability. Factor and reliability analyses were performed using the SPSS 23.0 program, and the correct answer rate for each question was calculated. Results: 49 items of a total of 13 factors were adopted as the final items for signs, symptoms, prevention and treatment of five diseases. The question with the highest percentage of correct answers for each question was "Slowly set up the unit chair when raising the patient"(97.9%) during the prevention of unconsciousness and question with the lowest correct answer rate was "soft substances such as cloth should be put in the mouth to prevent trauma while the seizure persists" (16.6%). Conclusions: A total of 49 questions have been developed as tools to measure the knowledge of dental hygienists' first aid related to systemic diseases and it is expected that related curriculum can be operated or evaluated by using them.
