In compiling flood hazard maps for the case of dam-failure, a scenario-based numerical modeling approach is commonly used, involving the modeling of important parameters that capture peak discharge, such as breach formation and progress. In this study, an earth-dam-break model is constructed assuming an identical mechanism and hydraulic process for all dam-break processes. A focus of the analysis is estimation of the hydrograph at the outlet as a function of time. The constructed hydrograph then serves as an upper boundary condition in running the flood routing model downstream, although flood routing is not considered here. Validation was performed using the record of the Tangjishan dam-break in China. The results were satisfactory, with a coefficient of determination of 0.974, Nash-Sutcliffe Coefficient of Efficiency (NSC) of 0.94, and Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) of $610m^3/sec$. The proposed model will contribute to assessments of potential flood hazards caused by dam-break.
In this study, the characteristics of the propagation of dam-break wave through a porous structure in a water tank is numerically analyzed by using the three-dimensional numerical model (ANSYS CFX model). As results of comparison between the existing measured and simulated water depth distributions in and around a porous structure, the agreement is relatively well satisfied. Moreover, for the case of the presence in part of a porous structure in a water tank, the three-dimensional flow structure is numerically analyzed In general, compared with in the area with a porous structure, the abrupt variation of water depth occurs in the area without a porous structure. It is shown that the porous structure can play a role to decrease the abrupt variation of water depth.

Recently, with rapid improvement in computer hardware and theoretical development in the field of computational fluid dynamics, high-order accurate schemes also have been applied in the realm of computational hydraulics. In this study, numerical solutions of 1D shallow water equations are presented with TVD Runge-Kutta discontinuous Galerkin (RKDG) finite element method. The transcritical flows such as dam-break flows due to instant dam failure and transcritical flow with bottom elevation change were studied. As a formulation of approximate Riemann solver, the local Lax-Friedrichs (LLF), Roe, HLL flux schemes were employed and MUSCL slope limiter was used to eliminate unnecessary numerical oscillations. The developed model was applied to 1D dam break and transcritical flow. The results were compared to the exact solutions and experimental data.

Dam-break flows, a type of very shallow gravity-driven flow, are substantially influenced by resistance forces due to viscous friction and turbulence. Assuming turbulent flow, the main focus of this study is to validate the increase of drag forces caused by surface roughness and especially turbulence intensity. A Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes(RANS) approach with the standard k-${\varepsilon}$ turbulence model is used for this study, where the free surface motion is captured by using a volume of fluid(VOF) method. Surface roughness effects are considered through the law of the wall modified for roughness, while the initial turbulence intensity which determines the lowest level of turbulence in the flow domain of interest is used for the variation of turbulence intensity. It has been found that the numerical results at higher turbulence intensities show a reasonably good agreement with the physical aspects shown by two different dam-break experiments without and with the impact of water.
DAMBRK-U model is developed for the evaluation of overtopping risk of dam and levee and for the estimation of uncertainty in floodwave simulation. The original algorithm is revised and expanded to include Monte-Carlo analysis to estimate them. The model is tested by applying to hypothetical channels of widening, uniform and narrowing geometry. Larger variation in discharge and water depth are expected at narrower sections of a river. It is calibrated by applying to the Hantan River, where severe damages from Yunchun dam-break and levee overtopping occurred on July, 1996. Overtopping risk of dam is calculated for various discharge conditions for Yunchun-dam, and that of levee is also calculated by comparing levee height with flood level at Hantan recreation area. Simulation results show that the overflow depth of flood level is 1,266~0.782 m and the overflow risk turns out to be 100%.

This study simulates the dam break situation by a probable maximum precipitation of Soyang-River Dam using HEC-HMS model and HEC-RAS model and compares the simulated results. The probable maximum precipitation was calculated using the flood event of the typhoon Rusa occurred in 2002 and using the mean areal precipitation of the Gangreung region and the moisture maximization method. The estimated probable maximum precipitations were compared for the duration of 6, 12, 18, and 24 hrs and were used as input data for the HEC-HMS model. Moreover, the inflow data calculated by HEC-HMS were utilized as ones for HEC-RAS, and then unsteady flow analysis was conducted. The two models were used for the dam break analysis with the same conditions and the peak flow estimated by HEC-HMS was larger than that of the HEC-RAS model. The applicability of two models was performed from the dam break analysis then we found that we could simulate more realistic peak flow by HEC-RAS than HEC-HMS. However, when we need more fast simulation results we could use HEC-HMS. Therefore, we may need the guidelines for the different utilizations with different purposes of two models. Furthermore, since the two models still include uncertainties, it is important to establish more detailed topographical factors and data reflecting actual rivers.
In this study, in order to reduce the numerical oscillation due to the unbalance between source and flux terms as the HLLC scheme is applied to the flow analysis on the irregular bed topography, a unstructured finite volume model based on the well-balanced HLLC scheme and the shallow water equations is developed and applied to problems of dam-break waves. The well-balanced HLLC scheme considers directly the gradient of bed topography as the flux terms is calculated. This scheme provides the good numerical balance between the source and flux terms in the case of the application to the steady-state transcritical flow. To verify the numerical model developed in this study, it is applied to three cases of hydraulic model experiments and a field case study of Mapasset dam failure (France). As a result of the verification, the predicted numerical results agree relatively well with available laboratory and field measurements. The model provides slightly more accurate results compared with the existing models.
This study aims to provide a better understanding of the turbulent flow characteristics in swash zone. A double dam-break method is employed to generate the swash zone flow. Comparing with the conventional single dam-break method, a delay between two gate opening can be controlled to reproduce various interactions between uprush and backwash. For numerical simulations, overInterDyMFoam based on OpenFOAM is adopted. Using overInterDyMFoam, interface between two immiscible fluids having different densities (i.e., air and water phases) can be tracked in a moving mesh with multiple layers. Two-dimensional Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes equations are solved with a standard 𝜅-𝜖 turbulence model for momentum and continuity. Numerical model results are validated with laboratory experiment data for the time series of water depth and streamwise velocity. Turbulent kinetic energy distribution is further investigated to identify the turbulence evolution for each flow regime (i.e., uprush, backwash, and swash-swash interaction).
This paper describes a finite volume, two-dimensional model. It adopts a recently developed essentially non-oscillatory(ENO) schemes based on the Lax-Friedrichs solver, which was modified for a finite volume grid, and employs a modified MUSCL(Monotonic Upstream centered Scheme for Conservation Law) for second-order accuracy in space. To demonstrate the applications of the model, it is applied to solve the 1-D and 2-D dam-break problems. The model in conjunction with the modified MUSCL showed a better agreement with analytical solutions than the minmod function in 1-D dam-break problems and is satisfactorily validated with documented published data in 2-D dam-break problems. The model was applied to tidal wane entering channel at one end, and the results showed a good agreement with analytical solutions. In the channel with reflective boundary conditions specified at the extremities, the model was capable of accurately simulating the wave propagation.
Uncertainty in dam breach flood routing results was analyzed in order to provide the basis fer the investigation of their effects on the flood damage assessments and dam safety risk assessments. The Monte Carlo simulation based on Latin Hypercube Sampling technique was used to generate random values for two uncertain input parameters (i.e., dam breach parameters and Manning's n roughness coefficients) of a dam breach flood routing analysis model. The flood routing results without considering the uncertainty in two input parameters were compared with those with considering the uncertainty. This paper showed that dam breach flood routing results heavily depend on the two uncertain input parameters. This study indicated that the flood damage assessments in the downstream areas can be critical if uncertainty in dam breach flood routing results are considered in a reasonable manner.
