  • This was a study on the ultimate effect and characteristics of introducing a roundabout through a review of literature on the subject of roundabout. In order to examine an effect produced when roundabout is substituted for ordinary signal-controlled intersection operated at Daego Five-way Intersection and Seongmo Five-way Intersection located in Junggu, Daejeon Metropolitan City, site to be studied, the produced effect was analyzed through comparison between before and after introducing roundabouts in series at Daego Five-way Intersection and Seongmo Five-way Intersection by using microscopic traffic simulation program VISSIM widely used for analyzing an effect of roundabout based on a survey of geometric structure, traffic volume and signal interval on the site. As mentioned above, when Daego Five-way Intersection and Seongmo Five-way Intersection was changed to roundabout, a positive effect was produced on average speed and delay time in comparison with the existing status. It is possible to expect that roundabout can be more efficiently operated when 2 places on the site are changed to double roundabout than when separately changed to roundabouts.

  • In the last five years, Korea has supplied many more bicycle facilities than in the last several decades combined. However, have bicyclists increased in proportion to investment? If bicyclists are avoiding existing bicycle related facilities, including off-road bicycle facilities, it could be because suppliers did not consider bicyclists' preferences in their planning process. In this paper, the authors tried to understand the bicyclists' behavioral and route choice characteristics using stated preference surveys and a logit model, using commuting time in Daejeon Metropolitan City, Korea. The results show that nine factors affect the route choice behavior of bicyclists. In particular, bicyclists preferred sub-arterial roads to off-road, dedicated bicycle facilities in residential area. It means that bicyclists like a seamless bicycle route and that a buffer zone between car lanes and bicycle lanes or 50 km/h speed limits for cars are necessary for bicycle lanes that are not physical separated.

  • Objective : This study was performed to analyze the relationship between posttraumatic stress, coping style, and dissociation in Korean firefighters. Methods : Subjects included 193 male and 9 female firefighters in the metropolitan city of Daejeon. Their age ranged from 25 to 57 with an average of 39.17 (SD : 7.572) years. Their posttraumatic stress or traumatic experiences were assessed with the Korean Version of the Posttraumatic Stress Diagnostic Scale. Their coping style was categorized with the Korean version of the Ways of Coping Checklist. Their dissociation was assessed with the Korean version of Dissociative Experiences Scale. The data analysis included a correlation analysis and structural equation modeling. The modeling tested the validity of the model that posttraumatic stress had a direct effect on dissociation and coping style had an mediatory effect between stress and dissociation. Results : First, firefighters' posttraumatic stress or traumatic experiences had a direct effect on dissociation, a symptom of a mental disorder. Second, the firefighters employed passive styles to cope with their stress. This is explained that they had been exposed to their traumatic events repeatedly without being able to control it themselves. Third, coping style had no effect on the mediation between posttraumatic stress and dissociation. This is explained in terms of repeated exposure to the traumatic events. Conclusion : Based on the results, it is concluded that Korean firefighters' dissociation was not relieved by their coping effort but associated directly with their traumatic experiences. To decrease their dissociation, it is necessary to reduce the exposure to their traumatic events.

  • Apharyngostrigea ibis (Trematoda: Strigeidae) were obtained from the small intestine of two black-crowned night herons (Nycticorax nycticorax) and three grey herons (Ardea cinerea jouyi) between July 2006 and September 2018 in Daejeon metropolitan city and Kangwon province, Republic of Korea. The body is covered with a relatively thick cuticle, devoid of spines, and bipartite. The body measures at 2.3-3.33 × 0.86-1.20 mm, and the fore-body is ventrally concave. The oral sucker leads into a short esophagus that is devoid of a muscular pharynx. The worm was studied with a scanning electron microscope for the first time resulting in the detection of a pair of lappets located at the bilateral portion of the oral sucker. This is the first record of A. ibis in the Republic of Korea.

  • Avian trematodes, Urogonimus turdi (Digenea: Leucochloridiidae), were collected from the intestine of wild birds, Zoothera aurea, 2013-2017 in the Daejeon Metropolitan City, Korea. The body was ellipsoidal, attenuated and/or round ends, 1,987-2,120 long and $819-831{\mu}m$ wide. The oral sucker was subterminal, rounded anteriorly, and $308-425{\times}351-432{\mu}m$ in size; the prepharynx and esophagus were almost lacking; pharynx was well-developed, $142-179{\times}78-170{\mu}m$ in size; intestine narrow, bifurcating just after pharynx, ascending to the oral sucker before looping posteriorly and terminating near the posterior end; ventral sucker larger, in almost median, $536-673{\times}447-605{\mu}m$ and approximately 1.5 times larger than oral sucker. A phylogenetic tree constructed with 18S ribosomal RNA showed inter- and intraspecific relationships. Based on these morphological and molecular findings, we report here a U. turdi from White's thrushes in Korea.
