The fatty acid composition of thiocyanate utilizing Bacillus brevis isolated from carbonization wastewater was determined by Gas Chromatography and the results were analyzed. In addition to the saturated and unsaturated straight chain fatty acids this B. brevis strain contained a hydroxy fatty acid. The hydroxy fatty acids in general are shown to be interesting chemotaxonomic markers of bacteria. Cyclopropane fatty acids are totally absent in this strain. A comparison of the fatty acid composition of this strain with B-33 and B-34 strains of Bacillus brevis shows that there are deviations among these strains. The deviation in Bacillus brevis could be due to the stress effect of thiocyanate. This result supports that fatty acid synthesis depends highly on the environment.

Farnesyl Protein Transferase (FPTase) catalyses a post-translational modification of Ras that is obligatory for the cell transforming activity of this oncogene protein. The screening of natural products to identify inhibitors of this enzyme as a potential anticancer agents, has led to the isolation of a novel lactone, from the hydroid Solanderia secunda. Solandelactone G has been isolated from the hydroid Solanderia secunda collected along the offshore of Jaejudo and Keomunde. The structure of the compound has been determined as cyclopropane containing C$\_$22/ fatty acid lactone on the basis of the combined spectral and chemical methods
Off-flavors and unfavorable odors in tuna fish oil were successfully removed and identified using supercritical carbon dioxide extraction, while retaining variable compounds, polyunsaturated fatty acids such as EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid). Samples of oil were extracted in a 100 mL semi-batch stainless steel vessel under conditions which ranged from 8 to 20 MPa and $20\;to\;60^{\circ}C$ with solvent ($CO_{2}$) flows from 10 g/min. GC-MS was used to identify the main volatile components contributing to the off-flavors and odors which included 2-methyl-1-propanol, 2,4-hexadienal, cyclopropane, and octadiene. Analyses of oil extracted at $40^{\circ}C$, 20 MPa showed a 99.8% reduction in dimethyl disulfide. Other significant off-flavors identified were 2-methyl-butene, 3-hydroxy butanal and ethylbenzene.
This study investigated the effect of proline addition on the salt tolerance of Tetragenococcus halophilus. Salt stress led to the accumulation of intracellular proline in T. halophilus. When 0.5 g/l proline was added to hyperhaline medium, the biomass increased 34.6% (12% NaCl) and 27.7% (18% NaCl) compared with the control (without proline addition), respectively. A metabolomic approach was employed to reveal the cellular metabolic responses and protective mechanisms of proline upon salt stress. The results showed that both the cellular membrane fatty acid composition and metabolite profiling responded by increasing unsaturated and cyclopropane fatty acid proportions, as well as accumulating some specific intracellular metabolites (environmental stress protector). Higher contents of intermediates involved in glycolysis, the tricarboxylic acid cycle, and the pentose phosphate pathway were observed in the cells supplemented with proline. In addition, addition of proline resulted in increased concentrations of many organic osmolytes, including glutamate, alanine, citrulline, N-acetyl-tryptophan, and mannitol, which may be beneficial for osmotic homeostasis. Taken together, results in this study suggested that proline plays a protective role in improving the salt tolerance of T. halophilus by regulating the related metabolic pathways.
The detection of many synthetic chemicals used in industry that may pose a genetic hazard in our environment is subject of great concern at present. In this respect, the genetic toxicity of fenpropathrin ((RS)-.alpha.-cyano-3-phenoxybenzyl-2,2,3,3-tetramethyl cyclopropane carboxylate, CAS No.:39514-41-8), a pyrethroid insecticide, was evaluated in bacterial gene mutation system, chromosome aberration in mammalian cell system and in vivo micronucleus assay with rodents. In bacterial gene mutation assay, no mutagenicity of fenpropathrin (62-$5000\mug/plate$) was observed in Salmonella typhimurium TA 98, 100, 1535 and 1537 both in the absence and in the presence of S-9 metabolic activaton system. In mammalian cell system using chinese hamster lung fibroblast, no clastogenicity of fenpropathrin was also observed both in the absence and in the presence of metabolic activation system in the concentration range of $7-28\mug/ml$. And also, in vivo micronucleus assay using mouse bone marrow cells, fenpropathrin also revealed no mutagenic potential in the dose range of 27-105 mg/kg body weight of fenpropathrin (i.p.). Consequently, no mutagenic potential of fenpropathrin was observed in vitro bacterial, mammalian mutagenicity systems and in vivo micronucleus assay in the dose ranges used in this experiment.

Recent studies on the photoreactivity of l,4-unsaturated systems have changed some ideas that were firmly established in this area of research for many years. Thus, we have described the first examples of 2-aza-di-$\pi$-methane (2-ADPM) rearrangements promoted by triplet-sensitization and by single electron transfer (SET) using electron-acceptor sensitizers. These reactions afford N-vinylaziridine and cyclopropylimine photoproducts in the first examples of di-$\pi$-methane processes that yield three-membered ring heterocycles. l-Aza-1,4-dienes also undergo SET-promoted l-aza-di-$\pi$-methane (l-ADPM) rearrangements via radical-cation intermediates using electron acceptor sensitizers. In some cases, alternative cyclizations yielding different carbocycles and heterocycles have been observed. The l-ADPM and di-$\pi$-methane (DPM) reactions also occur via radical-anion intermediates on irradiation using electron donor sensitizers. On the other hand, the photoreactivity reported for $\beta$,${\gamma}$-unsaturated aldehydes for many years was decarbonylation to the corresponding alkenes. However, our studies demonstrate that these compounds undergo the oxa-di-$\pi$-methane (ODPM) rearrangement with high chemical and quantum efficiency. A comparison of the photochemical reactivity of $\beta$,${\gamma}$-unsaturated aldehydes and corresponding methyl ketones has shown that the ketones do not undergo the ODPM rearrangement while the corresponding aldehydes are reactive by this pathway. Monosubstituted $\beta$,${\gamma}$-unsaturated aldehydes at C-2 undergo the ODPM rearrangement yielding the corresponding cyclopropane carbaldehydes diastereoselectively. Finally, we have described the first examples of reactions, similar to the well know Norrish Type I process, which take place in the triplet excited state of $\beta$,${\gamma}$-unsaturated carbonyl compounds by excitation of the C-C double bond instead of the carbonyl group.

The seed oil of Ternstroemia gymnanthera. a species of the Ternstroemiaceae, is mainly composed of triglyceride(92.4%), followed by polar lipids(5.9%), sterol(1.2%) and pigments(0.5%). This oil contains 4.8% of cis-11, 12-methylene octadecanoic acid(lactobacillic acid) in the fatty acid composition of the total oil. This identification is based on information from non-urea inclusion formation, silver nitrate impregnated silica gel column and gas liquid chromatography, $^1H-&\;^{13}C-nuclear$ magnetic resonance and mass spectroscopy. Smaller amounts(0.1%) of presumptive 9, 10-methylene hexadecanoic acid(dihydro malvalic acid) is also detected. The major fatty acids in this oil are C18 : 1(36.1%), C18: 2(30.9%), C16: 0(15.1%), C16: 1(7.6%) and C18: 0(3.4%).

Campylobacter is one of the emerging foodborne pathogens, and its worldwide incidence rate is extremely high. This study was undertaken to isolate and identify Campylobacter strains from chicken carcasses in the local markets, and analyze their characteristics regarding oxygen tolerance. They were isolated after aerobic enrichment and identified by biochemical, physiological, and morphological characteristics, PCR, and 16S rDNA sequencing. Their oxygen tolerances were analyzed in terms of the cell surface hydrophobicity, cell fatty acid composition, and oxidoreductase. Five strains of C. jejuni were isolated and identified from 61 isolates from 50 chickens. Among them, C. jejuni IC21 grew well in Brucella broth and commercial milk under aerobic condition. However, in the aerobic exposure, the cell surface hydrophobicity of C. jejuni IC21 was almost the same as the other isolates, even though its morphology changed from the spiral-bacilli form into the coccoid form. Fatty acid analyses showed that all Campylobacter strains had a high composition of $C_{19:1}$, cyclopropane fatty acid, and that the amount of the other fatty acids were very similar between them. Interestingly, however, only oxidoreductase activities of C. jejuni IC21 increased highly under aerobic exposure even though its activities were almost the same as the other C. jejuni strains just after microaerobic culture. It had 11.8 times higher catalase activity, 4.4 times higher for SOD, and 2.0 times higher for NADH oxidase activities. Therefore, in the case of the aero-adaptive C. jejuni IC21, expression of oxidoreductase significantly increased under oxidative stressed condition, which might allow it to survive for a longer time and grow on food under aerobic exposure. Such new strain might be one of the explanations for the increase of campylobacteriosis.
The acid response of Bifidobacterium longum subsp. longum BBMN68 has been studied in our previous study. The fab gene, which is supposed to be involved in membrane fatty acid biosynthesis, was demonstrated to be induced in acid response. In order to investigate the relationship between acid response and cell membrane fatty acid composition, the acid adaptation of BBMN68 was assessed and the membrane fatty acid composition at different adaptation conditions was identified. Indeed, the fatty acid composition was influenced by acid adaptation. Our results showed that the effective acid adaptations were accompanied with decrease in the unsaturated to saturated fatty acids ratio (UFA/SFA) and increase in cyclopropane fatty acid (CFA) content, which corresponded to previous studies. Moreover, both effective and non-effective acid adaptation conditions resulted in decrease in the C18:1 cis-9/C18:1 trans-9 ratio, indicating that the C18:1 cis-9/C18:1 trans-9 ratio is associated with acid tolerance response but not with acid adaptation response. Taken together, this study indicated that the UFA/SFA and CFA content of BBMN68 were involved in acid adaptation and the C18:1 cis-9/C18:1 trans-9 ratio was involved in acid tolerance response.

This study was conducted to evaluate the use of biological monitoring to determine the factors that influence the effects of exposure to pyrethroid pesticides among highland cabbage farmers. Urine was collected from farmers who was cultivating Chinese cabbage in the relatively highground in Gangwon-do the morning following pesticide application and was analyzed for cis- and trans-3-(2,2-dichlorovinyl)-2,2-dimethylcy-clopropane carboxylic acid (DCCA) and 3-(2,2-dibromovinyl)-2,2-dimethyl cyclopropane carboxylic acid (DBCA). Factors affecting exposure to pesticides, such as wind speed, spraying location, and the use of protective gear, were also investigated. Statistical analysis was performed by the Kruskal-Wallis test. Our analysis indicated that highland cabbage farmers were exposed to a higher level of pesticides than the general public or other types of farmers. When the wind speed was low, workers who sprayed pesticides were exposed to a higher level of pesticides compared to the exposure level in an assistant. However, there was no difference in exposure between the two when wind speed was high.
