  • The purpose of this study was to identify development strategies of high value-added cultural products in order to help promote Jeonnam cultural tourism festivals. In order to achieve this purpose, we carried out a market survey of cultural products sold in cultural tourism festivals held successfully within the Jeonnam area. The subjects of this study were local festivals which were labeled as cultural tourism festivals by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism from 2000 to 2008. The results of this study were as follows: Firstly, a store survey was conducted to analyze the categories of products on offer. As a result, the most frequent product was accessories (46.2%), followed by clothing and miscellaneous goods (25.2%), ceramic products (14.8%), interior decoration products (9.1%), and stationery (4.6%). Secondly, in the design motif used for cultural products, most products did not contain festival or local images. Cultural products with festival images made up 47.2% of the range, while only 2.3% of products on offer contained local imagery. The remaining 50.3% of cultural products for sale did not use festival or local images. Finally, in terms of materials used, most products used metal (36.7%), followed by textiles (32.9%), ceramic (13.8%), wood (6.2%), plastic (6.2%), paper (3.6%), and leather (0.2%). For price range, 52.4% of product were equal to or below 10,000 won, followed by 33.1% between 10,000-30,000 won. The results of this study showed that the cultural products of Jeonnam festivals lacked symbolism of the region or festival itself. Furthermore, items and the price ranges were not diverse enough. A possible solution would be to address this short coming, but more importantly, design a marketing and commercial strategy tailored towards the promotion of cultural products which contain both regional and festival imageries.

  • As COVID-19 made it difficult to travel abroad and attract domestic tourists to foreigners, the phenomenon of MZ generations flocking to Jeju through consumption patterns occurred. In this study, if Jeju Island uses Jeju's rural tourism and smart glasses to study how to attract and cope with domestic tourists after the pandemic and build a mobile application or smart glass to tour based on village maps, the docent guide service through smart glasses will help tourists. Furthermore, it would be very beneficial to introduce a location-based service to provide the necessary information at the location according to the movement path of tourists. In fact, we conclude that it can be implemented through the development of the Hansung Baekje Museum, and hope that the actual media can be applied to free tourist courses such as Jeju Olle Trail, as it provides various contents in selective development such as AR and VR.

  • This study was focused on the role of social capital as a measure for managing the sustainable growth and development of tourist destinations. Its ultimate objective is to elucidate that social capital is an important tool used to promote the sustainable tourist development, where the tourist development has an effect on the residents' satisfaction with their regions and attitudes toward tourist development, who have lived in tourist destinations. It also verified the moderating effect of social capital on the influencing relationship between perceived negative effects of tourist development and residents' satisfaction with their regions and attitudes toward tourist development, by dividing Yeosu-si, in which over tourism has occurred, in Jeollanam-do into old downtowns and others. An empirical analysis of such effects shows that they are stronger in old downtowns in which tourist development has been concentrated, than in others which deviated from it. This suggests that social capital can be a measure for reducing the negative effects of tourist development or maintaining sustainable development and growth. It is thus necessary to develop and promote a variety of policies reflecting the characteristics of social capital, such as the basic ordinance for activating private-public governance, community clubs, village general assemblies and so forth.

The most purchased item was a mobile phone hanger and the amount of purchasing cultural products was 10,000-30,000 won. The reason not to purchase cultural products was dissatisfaction with utility, originality, possibility of a present, symbolism, and price. The most important attribute in the purchase of cultural products was design, followed by symbolism, price, originality, and innovation. • During the Joseon period, the East Sea would be called 'Gyeonghae' due to a large number of whales. In the Republic of Korea, whaling was locally permitted in 1946. However, the number drastically dropped because the hunting of the marine mammal had already been carried out in Russia, the U.S. and Japan since 1800s. Before a moratorium on commercial whaling was introduced by the International Whaling Commission(IWC) in 1986, whale populations in the East Sea had plunged. Furthermore, Korean gray whales and fin whales weren't found anymore in that area. With the suspension, whale hunting was banned in Korea as well. Even so, accidentally caught whales have been allowed to be distributed on the market with respect for local food culture. With the establishment of Whale Museum and hosting of the 57th Annual Meeting of the International Whaling Commission(IWC) at Jangsaengpo in 2005, whale tourism was facilitated in earnest. This whale tourism has been operated by Nam-gu Office and Nam-gu City Management Corporation in Ulsan. However, the popularity of whale tourism has increased a demand for whale meat. At the same time, there has been concern over decrease in whale populations because of illegal whaling. In addition, a conflict between the use and protection of whales has caused confusion in tourism identity. Actually, there is a serious doubt on the sustainability of whale tourism due to the decade-long deficit and excessive investments. This study attempts to define a concept of whale tourism and propose a future direction for the sustainable growth and development of Korea's whale tourism industry after developing such comprehensive assessment indicators as a basic research for the introduction of sustainable whale tourism. To achieve the aim of this study, AHP(Analytic Hierarchy Process) was chosen as a main research tool and the factors were ranked by a comprehensive analysis of principal factors and detail factors. The current study showed the following results. First, ecological environment(0.430) was indicated the most important factor of whale tourism assessment indicators. Moreover, Population(0.1302), Action for Cetacean protection(0.1031), Governance(0.0898) were critical factors. On the other hand, Accommodations(0.0085), Whale meat(0.0088) were unimportant factors than others.
