  • The chemical modification of multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) is an emerging area in material science. In the present study, hydroxyl functionalized oxovanadium(IV) Schiff-base; N,N'-bis(4-hydroxysalicylidene)-ethylene-1, 2-diamineoxovanadium(IV), [VO($(OH)_2$-salen)]; has been covalently anchored on modified MWNTs. The new modified MWNTs ([VO($(OH)_2$-salen)]-MWNTs]) have been characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron (XPS), UV-Vis, Diffuse reflectance (DRS), FT-IR spectroscopy and elemental analysis. The analytical data indicated a composition corresponding to the mononuclear complex of tetradentate Schiff-base ligand. The characterization of the data showed the absence of extraneous complex, retention of MWNTs and covalently anchored on modified MWNTs. Liquid-phase oxidation of cyclohexane with $H_2O_2$ to a mixture of cyclohexanone, cyclohexanol and cyclohexane-1,2-diol in $CH_3$CN have been reported using oxovanadium(IV) Schiff-base complex covalently anchored on modified MWNTs as catalysts. This catalyst is more selective toward cyclohexanol formation.

  • Polyether ether ketone (PEEK) composite membranes have been intensively investigated for polymer electrolyte membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE). Covalently linked (CL) sulfonated polyether ether ketone (SPEEK) and cellulose polymer composite membranes were prepared and characterized. Polyether ether ketone (PEEK) and cellulose were sulfonated and then were covalently linked by 1,4-diiodobutane to produce covalently linked SPEEK and cellulose polymer composite membranes. The composite membranes showed better thermostability and electrochemical properties than SPEEK. The membranes were prepared by sol-gel casting method. CL-SPEEK/Cellulose composite membrane featured 0.2453 S/cm of proton conductivity at $80^{\circ}C$ which was better than that of Nafion.

  • ChiroSil RCA(+) and SCA(-) HPLC chiral stationary phases (CSPs) developed by covalently bonding (+)- and (-)-(18-crown-6)-2,3,11,12-tetracarboxylic acid (18-C-6-T A) to silica gel were employed for enantioresolution of racemic amino compounds, respectively. Also, these 18-C-6-TA covalently bonded CSPs were compared to a commercially available Crownpak CR CSP prepared by coating chiral crown ether as a chiral selector on ODS column. (omitted)

  • Polyoxometal molybdophosphoric acid (MoPA) bonded polyether ether ketone (PEEK) composite membrane for water electrolysis has been investigated. The composited membrane, covalently cross linked (CL) sulfonated polyether ether ketone (SPEEK) with a bonded MoPA, was prepared in sulfonation of PEEK, cross linkage reaction with 1,4-diiodobutane, and addition with MoPA. PEEK was covalently cross-linked with 1,4-diiodobutane to improve mechanical strength and was added with MoPA to increase proton conductivity. MoPA should be fixed to back bone of SPEEK to prevent bleeding out. Therefore, the carbonyl group of SPEEK was reduced with NaBH4 and 3-isocyanatepropyltriethoxysilane (ICPTES) was added. The MoPA bonded composite was produced in the reaction of MoPA with 3-mercaptopropyltrimethoxvsilane (MPTMS). In conclusion, MoPA bonded CL-SPEEK composite membrane featured 0.129 S/cm of proton conductivity at $80^{\circ}C$, and 2,156 hours of chemical stability in Fenton test. These properties are better than those of membranes of other SPEEK system.

  • The characteristics and stabilities of phosphatidylcholine liposomes covalently coupled with immunoglobulin fragments prepared by the REV method were investigated by the dynamic light scattering, absorbance and calcein release. Using a sulfhydryl-reactive phospholipid derivative of N-[4$({\rho}-maleimido-phenyl)$ butyl] phosphatidylethanolamine (MPB-PE), Fab' antibody fragments were covalently combined with preformed large unilamellar vesicles (LUV), Coupling ratio was $250\;{\mu}g$ of $Fab'/{\mu}mol$ of phospholipid in vesicles, From dynamic light scattering, it was found that the size of the vesicles increases as the ratio of cholesterol to lipid increases, but that apparently, the size of liposomes was not sensitive to the existence of Fab' fragments. Regardless of inserting Fab' fragments, the absorbance of liposomes decreased as the amounts of bile salt (BS) added. At very low BS concentrations, BS/lipid aggregates would be formed in the outer vesicles monolayer, while, at the high BS concentrations, mixed micelles would be preferred. The vesicles incorporated with Fab' fragments, however, are more resistant to the bile salts than the MPB-PE vesicle are. The absorbance of vacant liposomes and calcein release resulted in that the Fab' vesicles and MPB-PE vesicles by the REV method are very stable, but that those by the sonication method sufferred the significant change of turbidities.

  • Enantiomer separation of N-fluorenylmethoxycarbonyl (FMOC) $\alpha$-amino acid was performed on covalently immobilized chiral column (Chiralpak IB) based on polysaccharide derivative as a chiral selector by reversed phase liquid chromatography. The effect of the reversed mobile phase on the chromatographic parameters of the enantioselectivities, resolution factors and retention times using covalently immobilized Chiralpak IB was shown. Also the enantiomer separation of N-FMOC $\alpha$-amino acid in the reversed and normal phase was compared and the results obtained in the former mobile phase were generally lower than those in the latter mobile phase.

  • A one-pot, facile and ecofriendly approach to the fabrication of covalently fluorinated graphene using mild reaction conditions is reported. This straightforward and efficient strategy allows fluorine groups to be covalently and stably anchored onto graphene to produce single-layer functionalized graphene sheets from a graphene oxide precursor.

  • A porphyrin derivative covalently tinted to Ni aria-macrocycle complex has been prepared. Absorption spectrum of porphyrin-Ni aria-macrocycle dyad (λ$\^$max/$\sub$a/=227 nm) was observed to similar to a sum of those of tetratolylporphyrin (λ$\^$max/$\sub$a/=419 nm) and Ni aza-macrocycle (λ$\^$max/$\sub$a/=227 nm), indicating no electronic interaction between porphyrin and Ni aza-macrocycle moieties. Fluorescence quantum yield of dyad (${\Phi}$$\sub$f/= 0.10) was same to that of tetratolylporphyrin (${\Phi}$$\sub$f/= 0.10). Photoinduced intramolecular electron transfer or energy transfer from excited porphyrin moiety to Ni(II) aza-macrocycle moiety should be very inefficient in dyad.

  • The kinetic characteristics of an invertase immobilized covalently on porous silica have been appraised for the applicability of porous silica to immobilization supports of enzymes. The invertase was covalently bound with glutaraldehyde on 3-aminopropyltriethoxy-silane-activated porous silica to give a maximum loading of 120mg invertase per 1 gram of dry silica and 26.9 to 70.2% retention of original activity. The porous structure of silica seems to be suitable for enzyme immobilization, judging from the observed results of high immobilization capacity and comparably satisfactory retention of enzyme activity.

  • A synthesized 21-mer single-stranded DNA(ss DNA) was covalently immobilized onto a self-assembled aminoethanethiol monolayer modified gold electrode onto QCM. The covalently immobilized ssDNA was hybridized with complementary ssDNA. The interaction between surface immobilized ssDNA and complementary 21-mer DNA in solution was also examined. Each step was followed by monitoring changes in the QCM frequency with time. Also, PBS with pH 7.0 was selected as a supporting electrolyte in order to get maximum sensitivity and good bioactivity.
